I've been a bluegrass banjo picker and fiddler for nearly 20 years. About 3 years ago my wife taught me a few guitar chords and I've never been the same. I've been writing for 30-plus years and guitar has really opened me up. I've worked in recording studios for 25 years and find that I'm happiest with grabbing a Zoom H-1 and doing two maybe three takes. For me, it's all about the story. Go figure.

This first offering on this forum is a bit of a portrait of Townes Van Vant and the many others like him that I've come to meet and know in my lifetime.

No Place To Fall

Ten thousand words laid end to end
Spilling out beneath the pen of a highway poet who now descends in tatters
They disappear across the page
Bits of love, a hint of rage, as soon as they hit center stage theyre scattered

(chorus)
And he tried to out run the storms raging close behind
As he stop and share his stories with us all
And he wanted nothing more than just to lay his burden down
But he always felt he had no place to fall

Hed often bite the hand that feeds
Slit his wrist but never bleed, enough to ever want to heed the warning
Chase the muse for another mile
Condemned to hang without a trial, the pain betrayed his denial each morning

Watch the bridges burning down In the rear view mirror leaving town,
fearing all the love around him growing
Safe behind pills and booze preordained to always lose,
songs provided all the clues worth knowing

Well alright, James! smile What a cool retro folk thing you've got going. I see the setting in a little coffee shop with some Peter, Paul and Mary background vocals joining in. Although I wouldn't have known this was about TVZ if you hadn't said so, it's still a telling portrait of a tortured poet. Well done and welcome to JPF.

Lots of good words in there and a good folk song. I am not sure if you are looking for any constructive criticisms, so I'll give you a couple of free ones (ha, ha).

1. Lots of words, I bet you could cut 25% of the words and still have a good tale to tale.

2.) The chorus just isn't different enough to let me know you are in the chorus.

Now I know that the folk song can be more about the words/story than being compared to a verse/chorus type of tune, but I still think you can have an effective folk tale and still have more variation in the tune.

Good singing and playing.

Fine piece of lyric you have there, James.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

I'm supposed to be working, but I wanted to say a quick "thank you" to everyone for your feedback. None of us have stopped growing and learning, so I take everything in that's offered. Hell, if I didn't I would have never learned to play guitar.

Thanks again (oh, yeah, I guess I AM an old FOLKIE smile

And can I just say I am looking forward to listening to YOUR music! I can't imagine my life without this kind of vibe.

Hey constructive feedback is ALWAYS a good thing! Having produced a few artists, and BEEN produced it is always a pure thrill to hear how others "hear" original pieces.

Still trying to figure out how to reply to an individual post.

Any road, I'm grateful for all the comments above. And to Michael, yeah, Townes and those like him were a piece of work alright. Brilliantly crazy and self-destructive, all bringing about some pretty awesome music.

Hi James:

First things first... Welcome to JPF. I'm sure Townes would enjoy this and it's great your wife taught you a few chords on that guitar. On the "flip side"... I hope you will share some of your bluegrass work with us. I believe you are going to enjoy it here on Brian's site. It may take you a little while to get the navigation down (all websites have their own way of doing things) but don't forget to visit the General Forum and listen to some of the blather we share with each other.

Later, my talented new friend. ----Dave
