So, I got my hearing aid... Very high tech. Works great for hearing people speak and watch TV. Haven't asked anyone to repeat themselves since I've been wearing it. It's very tiny, but filled with options. Not good for my music yet (especially with headphones). They'll make a program in the memory for my music next week. I need it to be an accurate representation of how my music sounds (EQ & Mix). So now I keep this controller in my pocket at all times. Programs for normal talking, crowded zones, outside areas, etc. And best of all there’s an off switch for when I don’t want to hear Sandy. Oh, only kidding. John Picture of controller:

After having a bicycle tire explode near my ear a few years ago, I began to wonder if the ringing would ever stop. My point is... the impact on my song-writing and trying to sing on pitch were twice as difficult. (Some say I never recovered! LOL!) It must be tough on your composing, John. I hope the new device will make life and your wonderful compositions even better. ----Dave

John, didn't Beethoven write some of his best stuff while deaf?
Some songwriters could be accused of being deaf based on what they compose....
Or, is it cause they cant hear someone telling them it's not good?

Welcome to the hearing aid crowd John. I've been wearing 2 for a while now - Was in Vietnam and had a few too many rockets land around where we were. Interesting thing was the VA hospital tests my hearing and it turns out my loss was across the board so it really didn't affect mixing - They did however optimize the hearing aids for music (The advantage of a VA aligned with Vanderbilt and in Music City - this wasn't their first rodeo when it came to music needs).

I still compose & record without the hearing aid. It needs to be tweaked for my music on Tuesday. John

Or, is it cause they cant hear someone telling them it's not good? Beethoven's hearing loss was gradual. He had 3 decades of hearing music at different levels. So when he went totally deaf, he knew what everything sounded like from the written notes (notes, harmony, instruments, etc.). It did effect his music though. In his early works, he composed more in the higher register. As he began to lose the high-end, he composed more in the lower & middle registers. John

Hey Sue! It seems there are so many of us in this hearing loss situation. Yeah, I'm sure those rockets did major damage. I've had this loss since my late teens/ early twenties (partly Uncle Sam and partly loud rock bands). Nerve deafness. I can't trust my hearing aid for mixing yet. I'm going back in on Tuesday so the hearing people can make a program for my music. I want an accurate EQ from my aid. Not necessarily the highest-quality sound. I want to hear what my publishers hear. Or close to it. Wondering how headphones work with you hearing aid Sue? John

Well, I turned 80 in July and so far I hear about normally. You reminded me of incident that happened when I was about 16 maybe. A buddy and maybe my brother were out rabbit hunting. I had a .22 rifle, my buddy had a double barrel 16 guage shotgun. We were standing basically side by side when we spotted a rabbit. I started to take aim, my buddy also took aim, he pulled the shotgun up about 3 feet from my right ear and fired. I just about wilted on the spot. I don't know what happened to the rabbit but thankfully I was OK.

Headphones work fine as long as they are quality and have soft cups. The audiologists at Vanderbilt basically set the EQ for a flat response wich is perfect for mixing -- But since I now know the hearing loss is mostly a volume and not frequency issue I Have set up a preset preference that matches the volume from ear to ear with just a tad of high end boost for the left ear and I can mix without the hearing aid.

Thanks Sue! Setting the EQ for a flat response sounds like a possibility. I'll have them make a program for that. I can mix without the hearing aid. I've been doing that for years without complaints. With the hearing aid at present, there's too much high-end. Makes music sound tinny and I get distortion/ feedback using headphones. Just a learning curve I have to work through. Thanks! Best, John

When they tuned your hearing aid did you get to see the frequency curves they were correcting from? What I did was set up a Stereo EQ plug in I can put on the master buss that compensates for my hearing loss when I decide not to wear the hearing aid - That way I can mix with or without and and the settings all stay the same except for the final EQ plugin which I just bypass when wearing my hearing aids

They haven't set the music program yet. They wanted me to use the hearing aid for a week - and take notes, so they have a better idea for changes. The mute button mutes the hearing aid. So that would be like not using the hearing aid. It's difficult to find perfection since we all hear differently - even normal hearing people hear differently. Reminds me of the SNL skit "more cowbell", I'd go with less cowbell. Ha, ha. I will say it's enjoyable talking with people now. In the past it was uncomfortable. John

I have a band mate who is deaf in one ear and has a partial loss in his other. He brags that he'll never get an aid. Its sad because I can't trust his judgement when it comes to our sound. He's constantly complaining that he can't hear his monitor or headphones. I have him cranked and the rest of us at normal levels. I hate the idea, but I may have to insist that he gets checked out. its a big joke when he plays the wrong harp through the entire song.
