I thought it might be fun ask people, to post or talk about the strangest song they ever wrote.

I've been fortunate to have written over 100 songs with John Schick. At the net's hay day, when online collaboration was fairly new and people were taken by its endless possibilities, John and I were lucky to have connected. We were so fruitful during that period that we would often write a song or two a day. I can recall getting on a train to go to work in the morning, emailing John a new set of lyrics, and he'd have the music and a scratch track recorded by noon.

One day John had this idea about writing a song about falling in love with an Alien. At first, I thought it was bizarre (because it was lol), but then I started thinking about it as a lyrical challenge. How can one write a song about falling in love with an alien? And how would one write music to such a concept?

Much to my surprise, we managed to do it. Here is the product of our efforts. it's entitled Star . Lyrics by me (Cal) and music by John Lawrence Schick.

I wrote a song called Hawaiian Dream, even though ive never been to Hawaii and knew nothing about it. I had a dream about a hawaiian girl. It was verbatim from the dream so it was strange by default. I would have to dig for it to find it.

I have others too

Well,
I'm not sure I have ever written any really strange songs but 3 of mine may fit the bill. They are: I'LL GIVE YOU YOUR WHEELS, JUST LIKE THE DAYS, and THE DUTCHMAN'S FATE, all on the Web Site under Rays Music at
www.geocities.ws/fiverosesmucicgroup/

A lot of people think that most of my songs are strange.

My song about falling in love with an alien, written in 1984, is Alien Concubine.

One that I wrote last year with a similar subject is Black Hole Jezebel. A link to the video for this song should be in my signature.

Eh, Well,
I forced myself to watch the Academy of Country "Awards" last night. Gawd what a waist of good Air time! However I have written a song for all those, most of em anyway so named Country Artists, Entitled EAT MORE POSSUM. I read where Reba wouldn't discuss Politics. Well Reba's delivery coulda fooled me. She is waisting her time Hosting Country Music Awards. Her delivery at the ACM could eat most polticians lunch!

Maybe Reba wont discuss politics because she is more Hollywood than she is country nowadays. Country used to be the only music that embraced the republican party and its ideals for a God Fearing country. But once the stars get too big and become Hollywood, they take on the ideas of Hollywood.

There was a time Bruce Springsteen wouldnt even do an interview...with ANYBODY. Wouldnt discuss politics, never voiced his opinion or supported a candidate, couldnt even get him to do saturday night live until much later in his career. His music always leaned towards the left, but people didnt mind that. But now hes so globally huge, he doesnt need republicans to buy his music, he can now say what he REALLY thinks

In reality all music is political, a guy writes a song about not being able to afford diamond rings for his girfriend, immediately you know where this guy stands, what kind of money he has, what his class is, all from a simple idea in a a lyric.

Eh, Well,
Most Artists don't talk politics for a good reason. I give you the Dixie Chicks. They did voice their opinions on that London Stage. Their careers flamed out faster than a Roman Candle. On the other hand Johnny did a song Entitled, THE ONE ON THE RIGHT IS ON THE LEFT. So it can go both ways.

When I was younger and still trying to find my lyrical “place,” punk music was trying to making itself heard. So, I wrote what I thought was a very punkish kind of lyric called, “I Was Aborted (But I Can Adapt)”. The lyric was told from the point of view of an aborted fetus. I know, I know, don’t hate. We are all fortunate today that that lyric is blessedly lost to time. I can’t even recall one single verse.

We've all had our moments! LOL! I have a box full of "clinkers" (bad songs... unworthy of human consumption) and, unless re-written significantly, will remain there, never to see the light of day.

I completely forgot my manners... so, forgive me, John L.'s friend... for not welcoming you to JPF sooner.

Most of my songs are strange or unusual.

I have a partially written song I'll never complete for a musical i'll never complete, that is sung by a cockroach. but since its incomplete, I would say its a tie between

Catfish Lips about catfish that fall in love with a neon sign of a dancing catfish in a neon hula skirt
or
basset hound trees about trees that grow basset hounds on them (of course)

IIt's times like these you learn to love again. Foo Fighters

i've written many a strange ones, but this is probably my weirdest. Thankfully, I never put it to music.

Auntie Shirley
(c) Emmrich 2010

(verse)
ante up shirley, it's your turn
my dad used to always say with gravity
I never knew what he meant
I just thought she was part of the family

(chorus)
Auntie Shirley like to drink, smoke and bitch
and sometimes would swear and curse
when Mom wasn't lookin, Dad would sneak a kiss
I never told, cause I got a quarter from her purse

(verse)
once when my mom went into the hospital
auntie shirley came to help and stay with us
dad said it was our little secret
and mom would just make a big fuss

(chorus)
Auntie Shirley like to drink, smoke and bitch
and sometimes would swear and curse
when Mom wasn't lookin, Dad would sneak a kiss
I never told, cause I got a quarter from her purse

(bridge)
Many years later, I found out the truth
and man was it a shock and a puzzle
because shirley really wasn't our aunt
she turned out to be an uncle!

(chorus)
Auntie Shirley like to drink, smoke and bitch
and sometimes would swear and curse
when Mom wasn't lookin, Dad would sneak a kiss
I never told, cause I got a quarter from her purse

SHE PUT THE TREE IN COUNTRY

A Song for a bad Male - Female country duo impersonation Built around the two syllables

of that word COUNTRY

HE sings line one -- She Put The TREE in Country ( TREE = TRY)

She sings line two -- The CUXT was put in by He---- ( CUXT = COUNT)

A Foul Farmyard Joke to start this awful song Performed live but never on record

Ideal for an audience who are Three Sheets To The Wind

YES !! (The X is sung with an N) The song was performed by Scottish Comedian

-------Billy Connolly on One of his Big American Tours years ago

One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.

In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.

A song called "ONE LIFETIME IS NEVER ENOUGH" which was sung from the voice of a long dead father, who was sending the message in a letter on her wedding day. The Father had died 7 years before, and had provided a gift every year for her birthday, graduation and wedding. It was from a true story about a Father/Daughter in Wisconsin. I wrote it on commission using the real life information provided to me. Then was asked to perform the song on her wedding day. Quite a bizarre experience with people that actually knew the Father and the story. Sort of chill inducing and not a dry eye in the place.

Yeah... that is a mix of wonderful and awfully morbid at the same time. Awkward wouldn't have been a strong enough word if I had to do that...

Well, I wrote a blue grass song entitled "Sam's Sperm Bank".

It was about this guy who operated a sperm bank whose name was Sam.

It's a faux jingle.
