I'm sure most of the world remembers 911 and what happened that day in 2001. Gander surely does. Gander, a small airport town of about 10,000 people in central Newfoundland, Canada, had many airplanes land there that day, carrying almost 7000 passengers, stranded for almost a week because the USA air space was closed to all air traffic. These people needed food, water, shelter and even clothing because they were not allowed to access their luggage on the planes. The people of Gander and a few surrounding little towns came to their rescue, They gave them shelter in their homes, churches and school gymnasiums, supplied sleeping bags, bedding and cots for people that could not be accommodated in homes. They supplied cooked food, three meals a day, they supplied them with communications to contact loved ones world wide through telephone, television and internet. They even supplied live entertainment through music and dancing, they supplied busses and cars to take people places to keep their minds off what was happening. One lady went aboard the planes to take care of pets that were almost forgot about. People were very grateful for what they did. Some became life long friends and many come back to Gander and Newfoundland for vacations. There was a musical written about what happened called "Come from away" which has become very successful, playing still world wide. Gander is about 90 miles from where I live. There are hateful people in the world but there are good people too that will go beyond to help in time of need.

Im glad I had a gander at this, Canada as a government didnt do much for us, but seems Gander was good to us.

Some of us remember, Everett; and have a warm place in our hearts for the people of
Gander. God bless them.

Thank you both for responding and thank you Bob for that link, I read the comments through tears, even learned some things that I never knew before. I turned on my TV that morning and thought at first that it was some movie I was watching. Some time later I wrote a song about what had happened, partially patriotic and partially Gospel, as encouragement to the American people for what they were going through. I registered it with CCLI as it was the only way I knew to get it to the people. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was used by many churches in the US, even now, all these years later, it still gets sung in churches in the USA.

My brother-in-law, his wife and baby were flying from Ireland to visit us that day but never got here. They ended up in New Brunswick and had a similar experience. Seeing that they had a baby with them, a local family welcomed them into their home.

Yes,
Emergencies happen from time to time. Today the U.S as well as others are helping the citizens of the Bahamas. A lot of them, most of them are coming to the U.S.
An old saying I haven't heard in quite a while. Ten percent of the people don't get the word and bad things happen as a result.

Back in the day a German Duke was visiting Austria. Supposedly they took a wrong turn somewhere and he was assassinated by a misguided Austrian. According to history that started WW-1.

The U.S. supports much of the world. If the U.S. goes we can look for the dark ages to return. Like it or not, you can't just kill everybody that disagrees with you.

Way to hijack yet another thread and fill it with your bile and misinformation. This thread is about the generosity of the people of Gander, not your petty opinions. If you can't be on-topic please refrain from commenting. It's really getting tedious.

By the way, the shooter was a Serb, a Yugoslav patriot, not an Austrian.

The Archduke wasn't German, the assassin wasn't Austrian, and unless the Archduke's wrong turn in Sarajevo somehow took him to Newfoundland, I fail to see what on earth this has to do with this topic.

Well,
Sorry Frosty Blast, but I didn't hijack this thread, I merely added to it. There is real life out there. Some can't take it so they stick their heads in the sand or are in self denial. Faron Young recorded a song, IT'S A GREAT LIFE IF YOU DON'T WEAKEN, George Jones recorded a song, SOMETIMES YOU JUST CAN'T WIN, Marty Robbins recorded a song, THEY'RE HANGING ME TONIGHT,
Hank Snow recorded a song, NINETY MILES AN HOUR DOWN A DEAD END STREET, Stonewall recorded a song LIFE TO GO. All the Trump Haters are so bitter they can't see straight that the people rejected their March to Socalisim. Ernest Tubb recorded a song, I'M WAITING FOR SHIPS THAT NEVER COME IN. Well if you are one of those Trump Haters waiting for your ship to come in, you may want to adjust your lifestyle, otherwise you may be waiting a long, long time.

Humm,
"Gag" knows who Archie Bunker is. Who would have guessed. Harry Truman, way before your time and mine it seems said,
IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT, STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN. Gee, I wonder what he meant?

From Gander to Trump haters......... Wow, I thought I was bad Lol. 09/11/01..... I had a newborn son at home, working as a carpenter, and was seriously considering going back to Saudi..... Glad I stayed home and talked my boy into staying out of it. There are no politicians or atheists in foxholes.....

Archie Bunker from the TV Show All in the family. Archie was more angry than Ray, though. Ray, to me just seems like a harmless guy who just says whats on his mind, even if it has nothing to do with whats being said. lolllll

I love the quoting of songs, songs that have nothing to do with the topic.

As The Ramones wrote "I wanna be sedated" Now you see hey? LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

A government is not it's people when it comes to financial aid. I dont expect any individual to donate money, although many of our sports stars and celebrities dontaed substantial amounts to natural disaster funds. I believe Michael Jordan just donated 1 million to Bahamas.

I dont know what aid the Canadian government gave us, but I recal France donating TWO ambulances to our 911 efforts. And the guy on the radio said "hey you know what France, keep your two ambulances"

All i know is every time there is a disaster in the world the world looks to us for help. And I dont mean the citizens, I mean the government implementing funds and aid.

The US would be the first to jump in the ring if Canada was in a fight.

Well FD,
Fact is fact and fiction is fiction, no? The show, ALL IN THE FAMILY was loosely based around the Projects in the 50's in New York City where many low income people were housed probably Refugees form Europe who came here after WW2. I don't know but it was probably a part of the Marshall Plan by the U.S. to rebuild War Torn Europe from WW2.

Who knows if the plan is still in place. Once a Social spending is put in place you can't kill it! Just recently they finally took the Telephone and Telegraph Tax off that was put in place to pay for the Spanish American War!

Who knows how many other Social Spending Programs are in place paid by the Taxpayer. The News doesn't report it except they are going to have to raise the National Debt again! Everybody needs a Crutch out there.

Of course Archie Bunker was correct but who listens to Archie Bunker? I see the Unions are striking for more money and benefits from the Auto Companies. Well there's nothing like Killing the Goose that laid the Golden Egg!

"All In The Family" was set in the 1970s, not the 50s. It had nothing to do with the Projects - Archie Bunker lived in a single-family home in Queens. The Marshall Plan was about rebuilding Europe (you got that right) and not about building projects in New York, nor about bringing refugees to the US. In fact, it helped many refugees in Europe rebuild their lives there.

Who listens to Archie Bunker? Millions of people did and laughed. Great character.

Bitter Gavin?
Gee, I don't know what to tell you Gavin. Nobody ever get's everything they want. I hear people in Hell want Ice Water. You think they are going to get it Gavin. I would tell you to grow up but I see that is way beyond your capabilities. May I suggest you stop at the nearest Package Store and pick up a 5th or two of Jack Daniels or other highly charged Spirits and Brexit on out of here before you blow a gasket. Hey I just had a wild idea. You should run for Congress. We already have a bunch of "Idiots" up there running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off trying to look important. You would fit right in Gavin! Yes! Congress!

Actually, Archie Bunker represented the average middle class New Yorker at the time, although a bit exaggerated. The show covered alot of controversial topics like racism, gun control, birth control, single parenthood, crime.

There is no doubt Archie would have supported Trump.

Archie cracked me up because we all have a little Archie in us. And he was right about alot of things, but wrong about a lot of things too. Much like Trump.

Ray, Gavin just stated what the show was about, he was correct too. I think you were a bit harsh in your comeback.

Just like the Tom Petty song "We Went Down Swingin"

NOW!!!!..... we're understanding this mess better.....

Well, lessee FD,
You think I was too harsh on Gavin. I am trying to see where I did that. Wasn't it he who referenced Archie Bunker. But never mind. Have you ever heard the story of the two farmers and their mules?

No, I'm not bitter, Ray. No idea where you got that idea. Too busy laughing to blow a gasket. That seems more like your kind of thing.

Fdemetrio, yes Archie cracked me up too. The genius of his character was that all his more obnoxious notions were born of ignorance rather than malice. He was just an ordinary guy trying to make sense of a changing world. We all get unsettled by change. In that respect we all have a little Archie in us, as you say. We could laugh, we could disapprove, but we also empathized and sympathized with his character much more than with his supposedly more "enlightened" son-in-law.

I recall one episode (as best as my poor memory can) of an episode where Archie and "meathead" accidentally get locked in a bar or cellar or something and Archie gets drunk and starts talking about his harsh childhood. it explained a lot of his quirks and I remember being far more sympathetic to him after that.

I doubt that Archie would be allowed on the airwaves today. 90% of what he was saying would be called hate speech today. You have to weigh every word you say now or you could end up in jail. So much for freedom of speech. Freedoms are surely being eroded away.

Eh, Well,
What was that line in the theme song for All in the Family. Don't need no Welfare State, Everybody pulled his weight, That doesn't fit in the Gavin's World today. I remember when Lyndon Johnson got his hooks into the U.S. Economy. He took a look at all the Money in Social Security and said, We are going to spend that money, and spend he did. Today we have a 22.5 Trillion dollar (and climbing) Federal debt. But do the Gavin's of the world care? No, except when they are interviewed about the National Debt. Then they give it Lip Service and then go right back to Tax and Spend. I understand Nero Fiddled while Rome Burned. A lot of Summer Soldiers in Washington today. Excuse me Archie, you are in my way.

In reality the actor who played Archie, Carol O'conner, HATED playing the character, he was the complete opposite to Archie in real life, which is a nod to how good of an actor he was, he made you believe he was Archie.

Archie's sentiments still have a ring of truth to them. As I said, I agreed with Archie on some things, but he was not eloquent or articulate enough to be diplomatic. He spoke from the hip.

If you watched the after show, Archie Bunkers place, he really changed and became a bit more tolerant.

Some of the issues are still relavent today, and I agree with Everette, the world is too pusified for an Archie Bunker these days. They'd rather have fake characters who say lines controlled by media bias.

Are you saying I donít ďpull my weight,Ē Ray? What on earth do you base that on? I have never taken any benefit from the government in my life. I donít begrudge the help to those who need it or the fact that it comes out of my taxes. As a society we donít get anything for nothing and Iíll do my bit without bitching and bellyaching about it. As for The ballooning debt and who is paying it lip service, open your eyes. Youíll find them just above your mouth.

I think hes calling you a Liberal. Lumping all Liberals together.

I think this is the problem with the internet in general. There is too much "one side or the other", when in reality somewhere in the middle is where the truth lies.

A Jesuit Priest once told me that. "everybody thinks they have the answer, but the truth is, it's somewhere in the middle"

Aw, Humm,
Lip Service Gavin? Actually I am not saying anything that you have either said or insunated in your own posts. Those Cold Hard facts are hard to refute aren't they? But there is always that Package Store.

You're probably right, Fdemetrio. This tendency to label people seems to divide us into opposing teams. I don't consider myself particularly liberal. What scares me is the war on truth that is going on at the moment, and the internet has a lot to do with that too, making it easy for those who would do us harm to spread falsehoods and undermine agreed-upon facts. If we can't agree on what a fact is, it's pretty hard to make progress on the pressing issues that face us. It's something I think about a lot. I'm even working on a song on this subject.

I'm just going to ignore Ray's last post in order not to drag this out any more. It was supposed to be about Gander.
