Summer Calls Me.

Summer Calls me
to flee sun scorched earth
and find rebirth
in the place we all came from
where all life emerged
Seeking beautiful curls
and a warm salty kiss
with adrenaline rushes
filling my soul with bliss
as I master the surf
with a face full of mirth

Spewed from its hard grasp
in a powerful surge
delivering me smoothly
from its huge swollen girth
I sail through the air
like the seagulls that soar
with my umbilical cord
hooked up tight to my board
full of dents and dings scored
till I breech sandy shores.

Then I paddle back out
hoping I don’t get spanked
By an axed lip that wipes out
me walking my plank
hoping for a huge bomb
that is just a bit snarly
something tricky and gnarly
with a roar like a Harley….
“Yeah!!”

With a wave real close to peril
as I soar through its barrel
visible on the beach
in my neon apparel.
where the groms jaws all drop
and the rips all applaud
tethered to wax and grit
as I slot like a god……
Till the curl peters out
and I hit the beach standing
looking back right away
for a wave more demanding

There’s no rush in the world
that can cure my obsession
of hanging ten on a board
in a balanced connection
to the crest of a wave
but it demands perfection
as it falls from ascension
where you must pay attention
and ride like the extension
of a fin on a shark
it’s a heavenly profession
or just done on a lark,

But if you succeed
on those waves that you chase
you will find sweet redemption
when you conquer a wave
you’ll know joy that’s enormous
with a huge rigor mortised
silly grin on your face.
then you’ll turn right around
and go back to that space
where that last huge
wave launched you
into a heavenly place
but beware as you paddle out
on your next big wave chase
it might simply just taunt you
and quickly erase…
all of your pre-flight plans
as it tosses and slams
you face first in the sand
where you’ll be kissing some clams.
Start on boogie boards first
learn how waves are dispersed
then move up to the big board
knowing you’ll be submersed
drinking salt water cocktails
most will go up your nose
and when your tired of choking
It’s almost time I suppose
belly up and then squat
till you master the art
then try standing, understanding
waves hurt, they can smart
but with sheer determination
and a bit of true grit
one day you will rise up
and stay standing on it
till you reach that far shore
and you yell “Holy [naughty word removed]!
then you’ll know
that you’ve made it
as you stand in the sun
and become just another
California Beach Bum!!!!
