Strange how this one came about.
I did the musical arrangement for someone's lyrics and they didn't want to take it further so I wrote my own lyrics around the music.
That's a first time for me. A little sombre but then I like sombre.

Somewhere South of Nowhere ©2020 Vic Arnold

Somewhere south of nowhere. No friendly face
Don't know the road. Don't know the place
Don't know this town
In a snowy covered doorway
I find somewhere quiet to lay
on this cold ground
Chorus
Somewhere south of nowhere
Old news tucked inside my shirt
Underneath the wrappings and the dirt
I rest my sorry bones,
Far away from home
Somewhere south of nowhere.

It's 2 am in nowhere. My eyes are closed
Can't feel my fingers or my toes
No sleep tonight
I think about how it went wrong
I drift away to write a song
but the words won't rhyme
Chorus
Inst.
But I see the light, I see the light,
coming to me, way off in the distance
Not a neon sign or the full moon's shine.
Maybe like the dawn of our existence.
Now I just can't get up off the ground

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

A well written lyric but a tad too melancholy for me, I was anticipating more of a lift in the chorus to break up the hopelessness of his situation.
I found the last verse ambiguos in a good way.
Well produced but sombre
Regards
John

Thanks Travis.
Yes, very melancholy. It'll never be a hit but then it wasn't meant to be.
Just my way of representing a dying, homeless man, which is why there's no lift to the hopelessness in the chorus.

To me, Vic... it is a well told, well-performed story. Melancholy, yes... but bring it on. Good music is good music and you, my friend, have talent I would kill for! Well done and best of luck with it. I can visualize it as theme music in a "Western" Movie. You just never know where lightning will strike... but in music... it can happen when it's done this well.

Vic,

I think itís a terrific tune. Your vocal is in stellar form on this one. Sure, itís a sad one, but itís engaging. Love that baritone guitaróhits all the right notes; has a spaghetti western feel to it, which creates a nice mood. The harmonies in the bridge are special.

Great job on this!

Regards,

Deej

Hello Vic,

Hope you're doing well.
I agree with Deej on that good sounding guitar and I'm impressed with this line.....

It's 2 am in nowhere.

Thank you Deej.
Yes, harmonies can be tricky. Less is more unless you're the Everly Bros.

Hi Vic,

I like the very low key melodic sound to this music. I have always loved somber music and it does suit the subject matter so well. Your vocal is very much like Johnny Cash and I have always enjoyed his music.

Thanks Jane.
Good to hear from another JC fan.
Yes, the music has to match the lyric.

Hey Vic,

Having written many a melancholy lyric in my time, I have no issues with the somber nature of it. Hey Phil Collins had a hit with a similar theme ("Another Day in Paradise"). You never know. I loved it. The lyric especially. The music and lyric matched perfectly. Wonderful write. Curious - what was the theme of the other lyric the music was written for?

Dave

Hi Dave.
Thanks for the support.
The other lyric had more of a religious slant to it. Jesus saved me, sort of lyric.
Nothing wrong with that but not being particularly religious I wanted to take the word "Jesus" out of the lyric and just leave it up to the imagination but the other side wanted it left in.
So we agreed to disagree and I just wrote a new lyric from scratch. Very similar theme otherwise though.

Vic
