Never thought I'd start a thread about a Selena Gomez song but, Her song lose you to love me. It's one of those annoying, yet pretty ballads you hear everywhere. Today somebody had it on while she was gardening. It started to strike my curiosity cause of the timing. From a distance it sounded like 4/4 time, but in parts it was throwing me off. I doubt any of her fans notice it, but the time signature I'm not computing. anybody hear/feel it? It's bugging me, it may be cause there's no rhythm section that there is no real time sig...strange. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N4raKbF6Kjg

I think it becomes more of a 4/4 thing second time around.
It sounds like an exotic timing in the first verse but she's probably just singing and the piano seems to be following her. be curious to see if it was recorded with the piano and her singing at same time.
I guess overall it's 4/4 but I think most people would have a hard time singing this.

Never mind I think it's 4/4 just on odd beats, like hitting the one chord on the 4th beat, that's all it is. Still gives it an off kilter feel

A 4/4 with inversions. Odd beats seem to be set as a mixed influence. Just like with theory and chords.

The chorus is 4/4 or probably cut time, because it feels like it's in 2. There are added beats hear and there, like the two added beats in the chorus of "Look Of Love', but since the tempo stops, it might be just a simple hold. That's probably what's happening there.

It's actually interesting how the timing is working. I don't think I've heard a pop song that has the accents it has, not that I listen to a lot of pop radio.
Yes rubata thing going on early. The key for me is it hits chords on the three, which gives it a swing kind of feel even though it's not really a swing tune.
If you tap on your leg, tah tahtah tah tahtah, like a swing feel it works.
Some of it feels like 3/4 but overall feels like 4/4. some 3/4 Especially at the ending when it's vamping on the to love love, to love love
Pretty interesting as far as inane pop songs go. I like it. Like her voice too

Solid 4/4 time all the way through. Don't let the vocal throw you off. First meas. chord strikes on 1 & 3. Second meas on 1 & 4, then 2 measures on 1 & 2. And so on... There are variations on where the chord strikes, but always on one of the 4/4 beats. Probably even quantized. Best, John

I believe so too although I don't think it's quantized because the tempo changes throughout.. It sounds ( to me) like a live take on piano, the pre chorus slows down in tempo and the chorus has awkward timing.
I actually think it's done intentionally to match the confusion in the lyric.

I don't feel any tempo change Fde. I bet this is all sequenced (sounds it), save the vocal. John

If you tap your foot all the way through you will see that you have to adjust your timing in parts. No doubt in my mind anwwy, that it changes tempo and that accounts for some of the feel changes.
I really can't believe I'm thinking about this song it must be corona fever.
But if somebody ambitious wanted to try linking a metro home or drum machine to this track, I'm pretty sure it won't work. Might work closely enough. Any volunteers?

I have proof! I found a karaoke version. I figured the karaoke version would be more mechanical and be done using a click. Notice how all the beats match up and the timing is all synced in this version. Your foot should tap this version out perfectly. The original is not even using a click, if so only as a reference. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s6id0jjPmSQ

My foot taps out the original version perfectly. Try blurring out the vocal. The vocal will throw you off.

My foot it does! Lol
well agree to disagree. For me it's subtle but the original is not the same as the karaoke, the karaoke track is aligned to a click and probably quantized and no discernable tempo change. Original is different.
But somebody who could sneak a click track in there would be able to tell us for sure.
