Hi Folks:

I wrote, copyrighted and registered this song back in 2006. After our Pal Mike Zaneski "took down" his Demo Service "Shingle", we didn't have many options for a replacement resource. I noticed the other day (a month or so after he had posted his announcement) that Larry Magee of San Antonio offers a Demo service with a variety of Vocalists available, both Male and Female. I began my exploration, just like I had done with Mike, and found Larry to be personable, punctual, talented and a bargain when his product is compared to Demos from Twang-Town. He put up a link to it on the trading post thread (where few of us ever go)... so I thought that one way I could properly thank him, would be to post it here.

SPRING BANK FERRY
by David Lynn Rice
Production by: Larry Magee
Vocal by: Sam MacGregor

LINK: https://soundcloud.com/larrymagee/sets/production-examples (Scroll down to Song 59)

INTRO

Spring Bank Ferry didn't cost much dough... but folks round here said it had to go...
they thought "A Bridge could help us grow"... past where the ferry floated...
but the "cost to build" was bloated... and we can't pay what was quoted.

Those Doddridge ladies loved that boat... they'd come around to watch it float...
then the Highway People took that vote... now there ain't no Ferry Boat...
and I guess that's "all she wrote".... How we gonna pay the note?

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK (Larry on Piano)

Spring Bank Ferry... in Arkansas... Miller County people thought it was too slow...
then they bought that bridge... now they can go... to Bradley or Magnolia...
and on past El Dorado... it just goes to show "ya"....

So they towed our boat down to Bossier City... in Louisiana where it ain't as pretty...
then they built that bridge 'cross the old Red River... the Winter wind made the workmen shiver...
Now it ain't far to Magnolia... just a short ride to Magnolia.

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK (Larry on Dobro)

Edwin Phillips was a friend of mine... building Ferry Docks... it took some time...
One day he took me for a Ferry Ride... from the Miller County side...
now the Ferry's gone forever... right down that old Red River.

Spring Bank Ferry don't run no more... folks round here said it was too slow...
so they built that bridge... now they can go... to places past Magnolia...
and the tourists keep on going... Red River keeps on flowing...
but Spring Bank Ferry don't run no more... that Chapter's "Closed" forevermore.

OUTRO

I hope all of you will welcome Larry to JPF, send some Demo work his way... and be as pleased as I was with the result and quick turnaround.

My best to all of you. ----Dave

P.S. - This was the last River Ferry in Arkansas

Great to see you back in writing yourself Dave.
Sad when a service, building or person even! Is deemed to old no longer wanted or no longer practical.
Larry has done a good job on this he was a good find now Mike has moved on sadly.
The bouncy melody is a contrast to the downer of the moth balling of the ferry, and it works out fine.
A warm welcome to Larry and hopefully another Welsh posting on here soon..
PS
I got a great present off my two boys, they did a Vaughan family tree. There's Welsh towns I've never heard of. So when this awful virus finally goes, a few trips are intended
Regards
John

Hi Dave.
Good to see you getting one out. Can't comment on the arrangement as I know nothing about that swing, country style but personally I would have liked to hear a variation half way through.
The lyrics are really good. Congratulations.

Hi John V, old friend:

Sometimes our children do the nicest things for us. I envy you getting to see some of those quaint Welsh places. What I would give to go back one more time.

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment.

Hi Vic:

Thanks for listening and for your thoughts. I suspect Larry would tell you there is a subtle variation after each "break" in the song... but I'll let him speak for himself. I sent him a recording of mine that used a Sax in the breaks but we both agreed the song is modern folk or Americana and different instruments certainly added to the authenticity... particularly of the region where I grew up.

One of my childhood dreams was to float that part of the Red River at a place called the "Index Bridge" on the line between Texas and Arkansas... (north of Texarkana) all the way down into Louisiana where it eventually flows into the Mississippi... and to end the trip at New Orleans. Regretfully, it never happened. (B-T-W... there are more than three "Red Rivers" in the United States... but this one is the longest and largest.)

This particular part of the Red River is located east of Doddridge, Arkansas and a super steep bluff overlooks it called "Spring Bank." That is where the ferry got it's name. Nearby, the Sulphur River flows into the Red River, turns Red and they continue south toward Shreveport. In Louisiana Purchase days there was a trading post built on top of a Caddo Indian Lodge ruin that was called "The Factory." Many artifacts of the Caddoan Culture were found there by early explorers and it was a trading post before Arkansas became a State.

Comparatively, our history, as we know it now, is much younger than the beautiful countryside where you and John have lived and often visit... Modern Day Wales... where my Ancestors originated... before it was known as Wales. Can you tell I "majored" in History?? LOL!

Be well, my friend.

Dave,

Good to hear a Mr. Rice tune . . . it’s a nice production . . . Larry did a nice job with some nice production touches, as did your singer. I think I lean a bit towards Vic’s comment, that I’d would have liked a bit of the change-up at some point in the tune—but that’s personal preference, and like Vic, this isn’t my genre. So take that subjective view with a big grain of salt.

Great harmonies in this tune, by the way. Very well done!

All my best to you, Dave—and welcome Larry!

I don't see your song Dave, you should list it separately

That giant picture of the guy is a bit creepy, lol

Should be about the songwriters not the producer

Hi Deej:

Thanks for taking time to listen. You and Vic have "great ears" for music... and, if I were putting it on one of my albums, there are plenty of things that could be done to "spice up" the song. Unfortunately, it is a demo and unless I have a specific artist in mind for pitching it to... better count on the artist who picks it (if that were to happen) will want to put his/her own "signature" style on the "cover" to be done. That does not make me an expert or authority on how best to do a demo... but I have been advised to keep them fairly simple.

I also agree with the harmonies and to me, they just kept getting better as the song progressed.

Larry will appreciate your warm welcome, my friend and talented co-writer. Always great to hear from you.

All the best, ----Dave

Hi FD:

Sorry you are having problems navigating Larry's site. I have no control over it but will check out the link and see if there is a problem. Travis David had the same problem but eventually found it down at the bottom of the page. Perhaps Larry has added more demos to the list and my song has been moved.

...and yes, I agree with you about the photo of the guy holding that mic in the cowboy hat. It's a stock photo from public domain, I think... but I also told Larry it would be nice to find something more pleasing to the eye. I don't think he has permission to use actual photos of Sam MacGregor. It isn't my web-page so I have no say in how Larry handles things... just wanted to get him properly introduced to all the folks at JPF who might be potential clients.

Later, and thanks for trying. Regards!

----Dave

P.S. - I just checked the link... and it still works. The song is at the very bottom of the list and it took a little while for all the listings to refresh. It's number 59 and the title still shows up as "Spring Bank Ferry." I hope it works for you if you have time to check again. Sorry for the difficulty.

Ok I got it now. The other picture in the song link plus the name Larry Mcee threw me off, I was looking for Dave rice

One thing about using producers is it takes away from the songwriter, he or she should be the one showcased, just a pet peeve of mine... this is a Dave Rice song dammit....

Sounds like a country two step number set to an interesting g historical lyric, I've heard similar stuff in folk but not as much in country two step

I enjoyed it, swings nice. Definitely a different time and place but I like it.

Glad you found it, FD:

Remember, I'm the guy paying for the demo... because I don't believe I am capable of taking my own song to the next rung on the ladder. Old vocal chords seem to be different every day. The imagination still works and I can write, play and attempt to sing... but it won't play well in Sheboygan. LOL! Thanks for taking time to locate it and listen. It is still a "Dave Rice Song"... just done better than I am capable of doing. I'm not a performer... never have been and have no desire to be one. Too old and ugly! Gershwin didn't sing the stuff he wrote... not that I'll ever be in his league.

One last thing, the song is somewhat personal to me. One of my best pals was the foreman of the site where the ferry docks were being refurbished. After his company did all that work, Bill Clinton's Highway Department decided a new bridge was a better political decision... whether Doddridge needed it or not. I decided to write"Slick Willie" out of the story-line" in order to make it historical rather than political. LOL!

Yes I agree, but its still your product, you own it. And your name is not even on the track. Like you pay, and they get money plus all the credit.

I wouldn't do it that way but it doesn' t bother you so no biggie.

Good luck with it regardless!

Thanks for caring, FD:

My name appears in the credits... at the very top. You have to scroll around the page to find it... sorry, I can't remember exactly where... but I'm listed as the Songwriter. I didn't ask Larry to mention I am also the publisher for a number of reasons... but when you send an MP3 file or a CD to an artist or his/her rep... all that has been settled in advance or during the process. Most songs submitted don't make it past the interns from Belmont, paid a pittance to weed out the wheat from the chaff. LOL! They are forever "in fear" that they might like a song, take it forward to their supervisor... and have their heads chewed off for bringing her that piece of crap!

For that reason alone... it is so very important to have an "in" with somebody who "counts" in an organization related to the "biz"... and is willing to "vouch" for you.

I am grateful that you care enough to "come to my defense" but... in my mind... so far, this part of the process is "on track" and Larry has arrived among us to help us "gussy up" our product (our song) so we can have a chance at getting it up the ladder where they keep the money. LOL!

As with Mike Zaneski and some of the other brave souls who have been available to us here at JPF... Larry Magee is a great resource. He does expect to be paid for his work, has the knowledge and talent to crank out the best product he can "collaboratively" create with you (the writer) being involved in every step of the process... including selection of the demo artist. All without ever having to leave your living room or mini-studio to endure all that travel, pain and agony... a trip to a Twang Town Demo Studio can bring.

I have no "axe to grind" nor a "dog in the fight" in this thread. My purpose is to make everyone know this new resource (new to us) is available

Best wishes for success and happiness among all the turmoil we seem to be facing these days.

Well, as far as I know, if even all you do is write lyrics, and you pay some producer to compose a melody and music, and to make tracks and mix and polish it, the entire thing belongs to you, per work for hire agreements.

And If somebody wanted to record your song, you own all the massive royalties.......ahem.

But that aside, if a producer wants a to have a page of all the work they have done, that's fine, but Dave Rice should be listed as the artist.

Yep, those massive royalties are making me quite wealthy... LOL! Unfortunately, few if any, are making much money out of music these days. The folks at the tops of the various pyramids are "in control" and stashing all the cash, all the while, claiming the Pandemic is the cause of all this loss of revenue. I call the Pandemic "streaming" and once again, these bozos have outsmarted themselves while scuttling the music barge, now probably water logged beyond recovery.

As Marc has told us so many times... we need to look at it (songwriting) as a hobby. If the stroke of luck falls in your direction... enjoy the ride. They never seem to last too long these days.

Back to my little recording studio... got a stroke of inspiration and need to get-r-done!

Later, ----Dave (Artiste Extroidinaire) LOL!

Yeah I know it's all semantics, but my main beef is with producers of demos who just getting paid to do the demo should be enough .

If you're really good at producing demos, it won't be long before you have more business.

Well it happens all the time and happened here too, people would be including Mike as a producer while posting their song . Then, the review is based on the recording and not the song.

Anybody can buy a demo..if it's a matter of " hey listen to this demo I bought" fine, but if it's about...this is a song I wrote, then people should just post the song instead distracting the listener.

As I said, some folks don't mind, but if I had to or wanted to buy a demo, i m not going to showcase the producer, I'm going to showcase my song.

When you start mentioning who recorded it or produced it, then people start to diminish your role as the creator of it

Hi Dave ,,,

Al David here. It's been a while ... a L-O-N-G while!

I think you have the foundation of a solid song here. As you say, it's at the demo stage (a WIP I assume). And I agree with you that keeping it open to an artist's persona; adaptation is a wise move. It's a great song waiting for final production and an interested singer/AR person. For quite a number of years, I listened to many of your songs and seldom found anything to "complain" about. No exception here.

Glad you found a demo service you have confidence in that's reasonable on the money side. Keep up the good work, my friend! Great to hear another of your many great works! Be safe!!!

Thanks for listening, old friend:

So glad to have you back among us, Al! I'm hoping N. Alabama is treating you well. Our newcomers here at JPF are in for a treat whenever you post a song.

In truth, it is always good to hear how another singer and arranger "interpret" the song you sent them to demo.
Most of us here and at other Music Websites never get to hear a Big Name Artist sing our little masterpieces... and it is sometimes very rewarding to hear what they come up with. LOL!

Hi Dave. Sorry, I came a bit late to this. I enjoyed the song very much. I sensed there must be a personal angle to the unusual subject matter, so thanks for the background info smile

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about the producer putting it on his SoundCloud page, provided he has your permission. HOWEVER....I seem to remember you set up your own SoundCloud page. That's where it belongs smile

And you should definitely ask Larry to get rid of that awful stock image. It doesn't match the song at all.

Hi Gavin:

Your memory is "spot-on"... and thanks to you, I did set up a SoundCloud page. After giving it a "spin" around the block... I decided it wasn't for me. I am busy these days getting all my catalog in order and preparing for what lies ahead. My purpose for getting a demo done was mostly to let JPF songwriters know we have an available replacement for Mike Zaneski. I did at least 14 demos with Mike and seem to remember that one of them ended up with more than 12,000 listens. He is greatly missed and I wish him well in his new direction.

I did have a discussion with Larry Magee about that ugly singer image... and suspect he will be searching for a replacement ASAP... when he isn't too busy making demos. I can't wait to see if somebody like Ricki Bellos sends something Larry's way. She's been missed around here, hopefully keeping her nose to the grindstone, cranking out new songs.

As always, you are most perceptive about the personal angle of the subject matter. As a young'un... I spent countless hours on that River. I have serious doubts if this one will ever see the light of day in the music or film biz... but hey, some of the darndest things happen every now and then.

Thanks for taking time to listen and to comment. ----Dave

This one actually resonated with me personally too, Dave. I was born on an island. Now they've built a bridge to replace the ferry and it doesn't feel the same. That added to my appreciation of your song.

That's a great new avatar you have.

Hi Dave. I loved the story here. But there are some things with the structure that I thought could be improved. I think the lyric was over-rhymed and choppy. And since I've written a few swing songs myself, I thought a re-structuring may improve the song. So I played with it a bit. I'm partial to an AABA structure for swing. So here it is:
INTRO

Spring Bank Ferry didn't cost much dough
But they thought "A Bridge could help us grow"
And the "cost to build" was bloated – ‘cause we can't pay what was quoted.
Those Doddridge ladies loved that boat
then the Highway People took that vote
Now I guess that's "all she wrote" Yeh I guess that’s “all she wrote”.(7th chord)

So they towed our boat down to Bossier City
in Louisiana where it ain't as pretty
And they built that bridge 'cross old Red River... the Winter wind made workmen shiver...
Now Edwin Phillips was a friend of mine
He built Ferry Docks - it took some time
Now the Ferry's gone forever... right down that old Red River.(7th Chord)

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK (Larry on Piano)

Spring Bank Ferry don't run no mo’
Folks round here said it was too slow
so they built that bridge to go... with a faster traffic flow
and the tourists keep on going
Red River keeps on flowing...
but Spring Bank Ferry don't run no more... that Chapter's "Closed" forevermore.

Hey "Summy:"

Thanks for taking time to listen, comment and offer some great suggestions. After I've had my exam next week and absorbed the Doc's plan for putting me back together... I'll try to get back into my little studio and give that a try. Feel free to give it a "fling" at one of your gigs... if it fits your style and venue(s).

All the best.... ----Dave

Hi Dave,
I really enjoyed this slice of Americana (historically and musically). I never knew so many words rhyme with float!
I also really like Summeoyo's edits. Hard to employ after you got it all professionally done though.
Also thanks for mentioning the demo service too. Nice to know. Hope that Mike Z is doing well.

Hi Tom:

Thanks for taking time to listen... and,, to me... it is slice of Americana... in the form of a personal story. You are 100 percent correct about incorporating "suggestions" after the song has been professionally demoed. (Not going to happen... the "Horse has escaped the Barn." LOL!)

My purpose for posting the song was to provide other songwriters another source for having their songs demoed. I miss Mike Z. because we worked well together and his demos were very inexpensive. I was the first to use Mike's services here at JPF. i was very pleased with Larry's demo and believe it has the potential to be "pitched" exactly as it was written and recorded.

I don't have access to the websites that once allowed me to post my songs for free onto a page dedicated solely to my songs... and to provide a link to that page here at JPF. I could change the order of play, insert new songs, delete old songs and it did not cost me a dime. Unfortunately, the mysterious owner attracted all manner of people who broke the rules, put up offensive material and who often, would comment on one of my songs favorably, fully expecting me to respond in kind... even though it may have stunk or been downright trash..

With old age, terrible health issues and no way to keep my catalog available for JPF folks to listen... I must be content to be happy as an audience of one... and plan for a way to keep my catalog alive after I have "gone on to my reward!"

Thanks for your thoughtful observance. ----Dave

Dave,

Checking in a bit late here, but I can't keep up with JPF this time of the year as much as I'd like. I enjoyed your song, had a Jim Croce feel for me. I liked it, but also felt that the first vs rhymes may be improved, maybe less strong "o" rhymes? I wouldn't mind hearing a line or two demonstrating how the Ferry boat's demise paints a negative picture--make it more tragic, which will make the story more interesting to those unfamiliar with the circumstance.......just food for thought--keep or sweep.

You have a great sounding Demo here Dave--nice write!

Hi Dave,
This is one of my favorite genres. I don't write too much of it though I have done some co-writes with Skip Johnson, and helped my friend Frank Pappa with many. He is deceased now but his soundclick site is still up and running and still has people listening.
I really enjoyed this. you told the story well and kept it interesting. Good luck with it.
PS Look for aa PM from me.

Sorry for the late response, Eddie:

Thanks for listening. Interesting ideas. If I ever decide to do a re-write and new demo, I'll be investigating your thoughts. It is a bit of a personal story not too far south of my hometown.

You always have a suggestion or two... and they are appreciated,

Morning, John:

I appreciate your thoughts... but my "mission" in presenting this song (to let listeners and songwriters know we have another available source for demos... now that Mike Zaneski has moved on to other pursuits) is complete and I don't want to artificially induce more plays or listens. I am winding down my presence here because of the rigors of old age, the need to work on my catalog... and life's other responsibilities.

That will not keep me from "peeking in" as often as possible. JPF is a special place and one of the few hangouts left for songwriters, lyricists and wannabees. We owe Brian so much.

Best wishes for continued success. ----Dave

Thanks for listening and commenting, Marty:

Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm walking on "egg-shells" these past two days and doing my best not to let my optimism "run away with common sense." Monday, after months and months of delays, set-backs and false leads, I had a simple procedure performed with a simple injection to a bone spur on my right hip. My spine condition(s) still exist but the massive source of pain caused by that darn spur appears to be subsiding and allows me to walk without looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Each morning I wake up feeling a little bit better and I am getting at least six hours of sleep, even more today.

Didn't mean to turn this into a "pity party" or anything like that... just wanted to share my apparent good news and hope I will be able to get back to creating and recording original songs.

Be safe down there in a Texas "Hot Sport" and do your best to send us some rain up here.

Morning, Tom:

I've concluded that it boils down to luck and longevity! LOL! Thanks for listening and commenting.. If you are living on Oahu (where I was stationed eons ago) the area between downtown and Waikiki looks more like NYC with all those skyscrapers. My first sight of land there was Maakapuu Point as we flew on to Honolulu in the Territory of Hawaii. So much has changed but it is still a beautiful place.

Dave--

NIce story, and the style adds the local color!

I used to take the McGavock Ferry--It went across the Cunberland River to East Nashville from Opryland; it's been gone a long time!

But I remember one time I was waiting for the Ferry, a Little French Car-Boat went doun the ramp and put-puted across the river--all I could say was WELL!

You had to have plenty of time to ride across. They never put a bridge there!

Hi Mackie:

So glad to see you posting and sharing songs with us again. I've seen the McGavock Ferry but never had an excuse to ride it. Earlier in my Chameleon Career, I was returning to Nashville from Missouri and noticed a Ferry across the Mississippi (doubt if it survived) and it would keep me from going to Memphis... so I took it. (It looked like a "short-cut" on the Map) I've never been concerned much about using a Ferry before that experience. Talk about "A White Knuckle Ride"... I was afraid the current would break the guide line. LOL!

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment. I love hearing stories about Ferry's and Ferry Boats. Over here in the states... they tend to be pretty primitive but in the UK... they are usually sea-going vessels. (Makes sense!)

Ah, Nashville. Some days, returning home from the City I would take a different way just to fight the boredom on my drive down to Brentwood. Even took Granny White Pike once just to be able to say I'd done it. For some reason, Nashville always reminded me of Ft. Worth... mostly because of the friendly people.

Later and thanks again, ----Dave

Enjoyed this story song, lots of potential. I would have liked some stronger instrumental fills in the gaps between lines (or to eliminate them).

Overall the story was compelling but I think there are opportunities to tighten it up a bit. It seems to repeat the idea in each verse that the ferry is gone and was replaced by the bridge. It's a lot of words to say the same thing. I wonder if instead there's a way to state that fact once at the start to set the stage. Then tell little stories about the good ol' ferry boat days without talking about it being gone. Really concentrate the lines on the telling the stories of the characters ("Doddridge Ladies", "Edwin Philips was a friend of mine"). Then at the end wrap it up by coming back to how the ferry boat days are now gone. I think the line "tourists keep on going" is intriguing idea of unintended conseqences - the tourist revenue from the Ferry disappeared because we got impatient ("it just goes to show ya").

Hi, all:

I'm gonna bump up a few Dave Rice tunes . . . a small tribute to a valued and esteemed JPFer. This one was the last one he shared with us, I believe.

We'll miss you, Dave.
