The Last Time I Saw Lonesome Dove (c)2013 Cameron Earnshaw SESAC/ Robert George BMI

I’ve been thinkin’ of
The last time I saw Lonesome Dove
I’d stopped by my father’s on a rainy Saturday
We wound up just arguin’ the afternoon away
Then he cussed and busted out a twelve of PBR
Tossed me one and popped an old tape in his VCR
We were kinda like Augustus and Call
Sayin’ “sorry” wasn’t our way at all

I’ve been thinkin’ of
The old man that I always loved
How the scorchin’ Texas sun and dusty high plains wind
Slowly carved the creases in his face and made him squint
How he learned to live his hard life by a cowboy code
Never shirked his duties or complained about his load
O and ev’ry time I’d bring up his cough
He’d just change the subject or shrug it off

Lord, he was a stubborn man
Even when he grew weak and slow
That’s just the way it was
When I’d offer him a hand
He’d say “this ain’t my first rodeo

Now I’ve been thinkin’ of
The last time I saw Lonesome Dove
Although me n Daddy saw alotta things in diff’rent ways
I could feel the silent bond between us on that day
Now sometimes on Saturdays when it rains
My heart rides to where his mem’ry remains
So today I’ve been thinkin’ of
The last time I saw Lonesome Dove

The last time I saw Lonesome Dove
The last time I saw Lonesome Dove…

I enjoyed my listen, Robert and Cameron:

This one has "the right stuff" to make it "up the ladder." Brought back some bittersweet mem'ries... and then, the movie (a legend in it's own right) was a great topic for a song. Good luck with it. No advice... all that will be sorted out if needed when it gets "picked up" and re-recorded... or used exactly "as is." I can think of a dozen ways from Sunday this one will be heard again by us... and I'll smile and think of "Grouchy Couch" back there at JPF, stirring up Vic and Travis just for the fun of it.

All my best, ----Dave

Thanks, Dave.

This is probably the closest we'll ever come to a major cut. Almost had it. smile

Robert:

It is easy to fret over a "near-miss"... I've had more than a few... but I hope you two will let it serve to inspire your future efforts. You are obviously doing something right. Song creation really is a great deal like playing Horse Shoes! LOL!

Then there is always the possibility it may be found by someone else who will take it to the charts for you.

Hang in there! ----Dave

Hey Couch, I don't hide the fact that I'm not a fan of some of your lyrics, but, I think is is a good 'un. Deceptively simple, visual and with plenty of heart. To be honest, I'm not sure that the workmanlike melody really does it justice, although the performance and production are really good.

It's dated, I suppose, because Lonesome Dove wouldn't have the same resonance as when it was written. Of course, it's not a song about Lonesome Dove, so maybe that doesn't matter so much. If it was a hit, maybe folks would look for it on Netflix. smile

A little out of date maybe but I liked "Lonesome Dove" and this reminds me of something Steve Earle's might do, who I also like.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks folks.

It is six years old. But Lonesome Dove is presented as something father and son had bonded over, which means it has to be a classic. And something universal, which nearly everyone has heard of, so an audience can relate to it.

It also needed to sound like a guy telling a story, which meant no traditional chorus and a very conversational melody.

Ps...Dave, I don't have any hard feelings about not getting the cut at all. I'm self taught and I'm no networker. I felt fortunate to get as far as I did.

Couch,
Really well done lyric, I think it took me everywhere you wanted me to go in living color. I'll admit the first time through, I didn't really understand what Lonesome Dove was or meant but obviously I am in a minority and now with the help of Google, the second time through was even better.
Thanks for sharing,
Skip
