I was only me

Verse
I don’t have a special talent
Outside my way with words.
I’ll die alone a great unknown
That no one’s ever heard.
A song that never found its voice
That’s waiting to be sung.
A steeple with a silver bell
That’s waiting to be rung.
Pre-chorus
Gathering dust
They turn to rust
Just a waste of time
Chorus
All these songs I’ve written
Footprints in the snow.
Never was somebody
Anybody knows.
There’re just words in passing.
Much the same as me.
Never was somebody.
I was only me.
Verse
I’ve no wish for fame or fortune.
I just want to be heard.
I’ll die alone a great unknown
Along with all my words.
A dream that found no fruition.
A seed that never grew.
These words these songs I have written.
Dreams that never came true.
Pre-chorus
Gathering dust
They turn to rust
Just a waste of time
Chorus
All these songs I’ve written
Footprints in the snow.
Never was somebody
Anybody knows.
There’re just words in passing.
Much the same as me.
Never was somebody.
I was only me.
Bridge
A whisper in the wind.
I’m the morning dew.
A whisper in the wind.
A man you once knew.

Pre-chorus
Gathering dust
They turn to rust
Just a waste of time
Chorus
All these songs I’ve written
Footprints in the snow.
Never was somebody
Anybody knows.
There’re just words in passing.
Much the same as me.
Never was somebody.
I was only me.

Love the hook and love it all.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

What Vic said smile This is one of your best, Carroll, at least in my opinion.

There is an apparent contradiction between these lines...
Never was somebody
Anybody knows.

and...
A man you once knew.

You could change it to "a man you never knew." Probably not necessary. Only a nit-picker like me would even notice it, and you might lose something in the change. Depends on what you're trying to say.

It may be meant as one sentence:

Never was somebody anybody knows.

Yes, that's how I read it.

Hi Carrol,
Very good lyric. My only nit is the same. It is 2 different tenses in the same line "Was/Knows" I hear "I am not somebody anybody knows" or "I was not somebody anybody knew" which doesn't fit your rhyme scheme. Just my thoughts, KOS.

ckiphen,

Mighty fine write on this one, with some very nice lines. I have no reservations about the "Never was somebody anybody knows" line, but I do think Gavin's suggestion of changing it the last line of the bridge to "a man you never knew" fits a bit more with the song. All just things to consider, as it seems you've already done. But again, really strong write. Well done!

All my best to you,

Deej
