bennash and Tony,
Thank you.
And bennash, I dont regard the song as "country" as much as I hear it as Americana with a "Seger-ish" sort-of sound. I labelled it country on SC because they dont offer Americana as a category.

Yeah, it's not country really singer songwriter,, with dash of country, Americana even pop country.
It sounds great you're getting more confident in your singing, stretching it out a bit those little alterations add allot to it. I think you could get your vocals to do bit more even in the safe parts
right up your alley in style. That's what udio can't give you. You .
The b3 may be too high that's clearing out the guitar. Not that it sounds bad, just overpowering
Nice work!

Thank you for you compliments. I truly appreciate them. And I agree with all of your observations.
Singer-songwriter is probably the most accurate label.
I spent hours trying to get the organ, piano and guitar to come to a good balance in the mix. What makes that even more difficult is how different they can come through on a different set of speakers. Ultimately I was getting more of the emotion that I liked by letting the organ hog the song a little, so I went with that.
As for my voice...I'm trying. I came back and back to the vocals. I sound pretty good in the shower. But playing me back through speakers is always disappointing. And looking at my voice on Melodyne makes me want to cry.
Thanks again, Marty

Yes its more Americana Marty. I think song contests are cash cow for the owners. but i guess they're alright for the heck of it .

Very nice. This is what you do best imo - squeeze out every last drop of emotion. Really suits your voice. I like the organ. You might enter it in the American Songwriter spring break-up contest. I'm not usually a fan of contests but it might be $25 well spent for the fun of being in it and maybe winning. https://americansongwriter.com/contests-promotions/

Thank you Gavin. I'm sorry I didnt respond sooner. Am on motorcycle trip. I met a guy locally who won a songwriter magazine first place a few years ago. I listened to his song. It didnt seem like these contests are after songs that are simple matters of the heart. They seemed to want songs that made socially relevant statements about some protaganist defying the odds in some way. Not my wavelength and none of my stuff seems to qualify. Now that you have me thinking about it, maybe "Gone By Dawn" checks those boxes. I might rework it and give the songwriter contest a shot with that one. I appreciate your endorsement. For now, I'll consider that a blue ribbon. Marty

They generally want uplifting positive songs, in other words....contrived and designed to tug on heart strings Also with catchy hooks, and top notch recordings
This song is a singer songwriter song not likely be covered by anyone else. Personal songs rarely are. They also research the writer to see if they have a following shouldn't matter, but it does , or if they have a back story
But I was just thinking what if somebody submits An udio song. part udio
They will probably make sure the winner really writes and performs

www.jlsc.com.the Lennon contest is decent , they have different categories all the time . love songs , break up songs , summer songs , ect some people are full bands to simple acoustic demos , they probably judge on melody and lyrics , not all the bells and whistles. That's owned by Yoko Ono , i doubt she cares- less about money .

I disagree.
Bells and whistles are one thing, great sound makes everything seem better
Lyric and melody Shoukd be a major part.
But it's about how hooked the listener is when hearing it That's all the elements working together. Musical hooks too
Id bet nobody ever won with an out of tune guitar and bad singing

I never said out of tune , I said a acoustic vocal could be just fine , a lot producers prefer them to add their take on productions.

Awesome recording An acoustic guitar and vocal can be a great recording too . If it was all about lyric and melody an out of tune guitar and bad vocal should win if it's the best

I don't what they're looking for in 2024 . I imagine a great song , You have submit and find out. I would guess they're heard it all , I don't know how the judges rate each song . i would guess again on something original. Clay mills a hit writer has mentioned several times, publishers, labels, A@R folks, like stripped down songs , I guess if they love it , million dollar producers can put their magic on it , contests , no idea what they want .

For sure nobody knows what they look for. In the end the people listening have to like the song for whatever reason .
I remember years ago american idol had a songwriting contest, the twelve runner ups all sounded like records. basically they were
Artists say hey I have my record, I can still send this in since I'm not signed
Even though they said production didn't matter ... Right
Well I know indies who won multiple contests, one won an acoustic guitar and 10k
But that was the extent of it. Nobody gets a record deal from a song contest, least not any more, if ever
Me enter? Nah. Particularly today.
Still wonder what happens if people use aim so far haven't heard greatness from it. But stikk

icy cold....whoa!

This song is a singer songwriter song not likely be covered by anyone else. Personal songs rarely are. I don't disagree with your first sentence. I do partially disagree with your second. Though I havent had any practice at ending a relationship at going on 40 years, I suppose it is a "personal" song. Though, several people have mentioned relating to the circumstance. Marty

"Sometimes reaching a goal earlier than planned is a great achievement. It shows you have worked hard, pushed ahead and made it happen. However, sometimes reaching a goal far past your original deadline, long after you wanted to complete it, and after the accolades you might once have gotten for the achievement are over, it is an even greater achievement. This shows you never gave up, due to adversity, deficit, criticism and those little life detours that end many dreams and goals. In many ways, this is a reason for even more pride!" -Brian Austin Whitney
