I saw Ike Turner (Tina's ex) at the Philadelphia airport yesterday waiting for a flight back home to Ottawa, Ontario Canada. He and his lady friend were taking the same flight since he's playing a blues festival here in Ottawa on Sunday. This is a large two week event that has featured Blues Traveler, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, John Hammond and many, many others. It runs from 12 noon til about midnight every day except Monday and Tuesday of this past week. I was at the Bluesfest all day last Saturday and saw Jonny Lang -- I'm a real fan of his and he was great.
Back to Ike Turner. Because I recognized him at the airport terminal, I walked up to him as he went into a small shop and introduced myself. We talked for a minute and he pulled out a colour promo photo of himself and autographed it. Later in the plane, I decided I had nothing to lose by walking down the aisle to his seat and giving him a copy of a demo CD of a song for his listening pleasure -- "Guilt" which some of you may recently remember that I co-wrote with Cindy Miller (Tink). I didn't ask him any favours, but all the contact info and lyric are part of it. I happened to have a copy with me -- he accepted it, and said he would listen. He may not, but what the hell -- I (and Cindy) believe the lyric is compelling enough to get him to listen. So who knows what could happen if he likes it. Love him or hate him because of his past indiscretions with Tina, the man is certainly a musical legend and is certainly connected, and may at least pass it along. Because, as you may recall, "Guilt" is from a female perspective and was demoed (by Bill Scull) with a female vocalist (Eileen Balzan), although Tina is now retired, maybe Ike could try and get her to do it! *LOL*. We talked a bit more about music and guitars. Then I went back to my seat. I may go see him perform at the bluesfest tomorrow.
The truly funny thing about this encounter is that just a few minutes before I met Ike (we're on a first name basis now, *LOL*) , I was sitting in the terminal thinking to myself, "what would I do if a famous recording artist walked by?". Then, shortly thereafter, there's Ike Turner standing near me. Life's strange!
Moral of the story to you songwriters? Seize any opportunity that comes your way -- or make it happen. I wondered about going up to him with the CD, but hey, if ya don't ask, ya don't get. It's that kind of thinking that obviously got him to where he's at. So, who am I to argue. Go for it!!!

Glad you're on MY team, Tom!!! Great work and I agree with your moral, this is no dress rehearsal, ya gotta take full advantage of EVERY opportunity that presents itself, no matter how far fetched it may seem. And don't forget that "6 degrees of seperation" theory... everyone can be connected to someone else within 6 different steps... we've all played "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" so I'm sure ya all know what I'm talkin about. GOOD WORK, Tom!! Tink

That's great Tom. Airports are great spots sometimes. There sure is no doubt the man is a legend in music. From memory he engineered Rock Around The Clock for Bill Haley And The Comets way back when they were the Saddle Men or something similar, a going nowhere fast dance band. All the best with it Cobber. And Cobbette. Is a good song. Let a chance go by and it's one you will never se again. Or know if was worth the effort. Regards. Hi Tom Great story. It’s the squeaky wheel that gets the grease! Good luck to you and Tink! Nigel [This message has been edited by NigeQ (edited 07-16-2001).]
