This song came to me after witnessing what so many of us did via the various news casts about the aftermath. About the first time I played this in public it was recorded by someone in the crowd on one of those minidisc recorders. The fellow who recorded it agreed to send me a copy. When I received it I gave it a listen and it seemed fit enough. So, I began posting this song to my various online sites. Somewhere along the way the director of a small film group from NY heard it and contacted me about using it in their production of a documentary about Katrina. I received a rough dvd of the project and was surprised to hear songs by Dr. John, Alan Toussaint, Lee Dorsey and other prominent New Orleans musicians being featured on the sound track. It looks like I'll be in very fine company. I wasn't certain the live cut was what I should send these folks to use, even though that's what they initially heard. After recuperating from a few weeks with a bug, I managed to get a studio version recorded and sent it off for their perusal. I received an email back with these exact words from the director, and I quote. I love it! The series of events that lead from inspiration to film seem magical. I read about folks trying to sell their songs to the industry grist mill. They pay hundreds of dollars to have their lyrics groomed with musical accompaniment to make them more pitchable. I feel fortunate that it was the film folks who sought me out and not the other way around. I now await a copy of the finished project. I'm anxious to see it and hear how they combined my music with their images. My intention has always been to use the profits made from the sale or use of this song to help the victims of the storm. I'm hopeful that this film project will ultimately help me to do that. You can listen to "Katrina Blues" on my EZ Folk, Motagator or MySpace sites.
