Hi:
This past weekend I did alittle research on this "outfit". My concusion: If you look up scam in the dictionary, you'll find paramount group. Anybody that states " we can judge your potential in just 4 lines of your lyrics" is a great indicator of a scam.
Good luck.

Yuppers they got me, and I can name three more one that has four different names now
send me a busta demo, and a paper saying i can order more demo for 50 more bucks, also said they wanted my song for their record label but kicker wanted me to pay them 400 more bucks, If I'm allowed to post their names then Brian or one of the mods can contact me and I'll scan the contract and papers from these sharks send them to em, and the shark songs, except the last one I just mention, cost me over 160. to have em set and i still haven't heard it, probab; won't,

I just got a very long email from these guys, thanking me for sending them material. They promised me everything, and of course asked for nothing in return, YET. This is rather odd however, because I would NEVER waste a stamp or a blank CD on this outfit. I have had no contact with them at all. It looks like they're email mining for suckers.

Summer is a great time to get a great song noticed by the recording industry. And we're looking hard for some great ones right now so we can get as many as possible to Nashville Recording Artists for the upcoming big recording season!

The big news for this competition is the addition of a special award for the best patriotic song or lyric entered by July 4, 2006. (postmarked by July 5). This special award includes $100 cash, which is in addition to any other prizes you win. For writers outside the U.S., patriotic songs related to your own country are welcome. For purposes of this competition, patriotic songs are those that are positive about country, military, heroes, or any persons or groups who have contributed significant, positive services to their country.

Now's the time to write your potentially award-winning songs or lyrics or search for some you've already written and send them to us for the 2006 Nashville International Song and Lyric CompetitionTM Summer Edition. Any writer who's never had a song recorded by a major label may enter up to four songs or lyrics each month through August 31, 2006.

The entry fee is a low $20 per song or lyric, just enough to cover administrative costs. To enter, here's all you need to do: Use the entry form below to end your original songs or lyrics, written or co-written by you, along with the appropriate entry fee, and you're in.

Songs and lyrics will be judged by professionals in the music business. That means all entries will automatically be heard and read by professionals who can get your work to some of the best artists in the business.

This is a great chance for you to make it big, with your name on an award-winning song . But you must enter very soon to get in this month's contest. The deadlines for monthly competitions are the last day of each month. All monthly winners automatically go into the final round of judging for the Grand and First Prizes. So get your entries in now. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to get your Award-Winning song heard by the right people. And perhaps get a song on its way toward earning the fame and fortune of all the great songs throughout musical history.

Some additional rules: Each entry will be included in the contest for the month in which we receive it. To be included in the Grand and First prize competition, entries must be postmarked (or carrier dated) no later than August 31, 2006 and received no later than September 15, 2006. Major prize winners names will be available on our web site after September 30, 2006.

Did you by chance recently register a copyright? That is public information and the sharks cruise the list for suckers.

No, I havent registered any material anywhere for a couple of years.
The only "public" posting of late was my entry into JPF Lyric contest.

oh, I was contacted by Paramount also. Although I didn't realize they were sharks.! I sent three of my lyrics to them for a free critique. Next thing I knew I received a contract in the mail. Of course being new at this, I was excited as all get out. Then I did the google search and it brought me here to this site. I'm throwing that contract in the trash. I'm glad this site was here for me to find out the truth before I went and sent them my hard earned money. For someone like me who doesn't write music, I thought this would be a good thing. Now I know better. Thanks.....

Shell, I give you a lot of credit. I know it can be hard to question something that seems like its exactly what you have been waiting for... but you took the time to do your homework just the same.

Another potential victim gets out of the water just in time, thanks to the lifeguard known as: JPF!

Shelley and all,

Hello there, I'm from Canada. Earlier today I was online at SOCAN, which as you know is Canada's version of BMI/ASCAP etc, and found that one of the songs that I had co-written back in the 1990's was just registered with SOCAN as being on a compilation CD from Paramount, "Catch A Rising Star Compilation". Well, after a quick Google search, here I am...

I too was a little excited at first when I saw the name "Paramount", but then got suspicious and did the search. I think my old co-writer must have sent the song in.

So, maybe this will give all a little insight, unless someone has filled everyone in on the basics...

Since 1990 I've been running a recording studio, and around 1998 I became an "in-house" studio for a large publishing company. The bottom line is that if a publisher finds your song viable and marketable, (s)he will invest in the demo for the song AND pay the songplugger to plug your song. You will enter into a contract with the publisher, usually assigning the copyright to the publisher for a term, usually 36 months. After this term if your song has not been placed with an artist/producer by the songplugger, then your copyright will revert back to you. This will all be laid out clearly in your contract, along with the information of how the expenses of the demo and songplugger will be handled. Normally, depending on the size of the publisher, demo cost and plugging will be absorbed by the publisher out of their end. Royalties and other incomes are usually split 50/50 between the writer(s) and the publisher if a song is actually cut.

MORE INFO :/
From the book, "Songwriter's Market" by Horton Books

(pg. 24) "...
-Avoid CD compilation deals where a record company asks you to pay a fee to be included on a CD to be sent to radio stations, producers, etc. It's primarily a money-maker for the company invovled...

-PUBLISHERS THAT CHARGE:
The publishers of "Songwriter's Market" feel that if a publisher truly believes in you and your music, they will invest in a professional demo. Their book only lists publishers that do not charge for this service, however there are smaller publishers with demo services as part of their organization who request a professional demo with the submission of your song. If you cannot provide one with a smaller publisher, they will offer you the option of using their service or the use of an outside company to create the demo. This does not necessarily mean that the smaller publishing company is "ripping you off". Just be advised that there are other publishing companies do not charge for this service..."

When I first browsed the "Paramount" website, I thought to myself, "OK, they're offering a 'Demo' production service", which I guess is fine on its own, if you want to spend money on a professional sounding demo and take it to a smaller publishing company that doesn't offer demos and requires a "professional" demo...but...most "professional" publishing companies DO NOT require a professional demo to listen to your songs. Our publishing company had an entire staff whose job was to listen to demos all day long. There's a difference between a good song and a GREAT song, and you don't need a "professional" demo to submit to a publisher. They'll recognize a great song right away.

Anyhow, I'm rambling...get a book like "Songwriter's Market" and follow the instructions, usually contacting the companies directly and asking for permission to submit songs. They will tell you what format (CD/DVD etc) to submit if they are accepting songs.

Best wishes, and use your best judgement,
BenT

Songwriters Market has their share of sharks lurking there,so be careful.I was badly bitten by one that looked like a legitimate record/publishing company.I don't know if SM screens the people they put in their book, but even if they do,I guess a few slips through.

For the most part all song contests are a scam ...

Enter them and expect nothing..

Because of my website I get these letters /emails also..
I love it because they dont seem to realize that Im not a writer...

Then I blast them with questions...some I cant repeat here..but sometime around a campfire I could share..

I kind of suck them in into my little den of tricks and then I bomb them, after a few emails or so...Some do not answer me..

Some have called me...We have a nice conversation up to a point...Then it kind of degrades into the gutter, mostly from them and that I tricked them because Iam a legit music publisher.

As a matter of fact Im leaving for Nashville this coming Friday for a biz trip...I will be stopping by this one office, just because this idiot told me he would kick my ass for making a fool out of him, for not telling him my background .. Im going to give him the chance.

Dude...

Right on Dude..I think that we should have a message board where we can list these business's for our comments and experiences. I notice the same questions on other sites. It would be beneficial for writers to have easy excess to inquire about these business's.

On www.songwriter101.com is a thread called 'Paramount Dummy' (I think) where a writer tells of songs disappearing into that black hole and later being released, even earning Grammy's, without her ever hearing from them again.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com
