I have been searching for discussion by musicians about Paul Pott's performance on "Britain's Got Talent," but since I can't find any, I decided to start one myself. I'd like to start out by saying that I am not a musician, big TV watcher or fan of these types of shows, but felt compelled enough to learn more about this guy or at least hear what others, especially musicians, are saying about him. I think, and hope, that this is the beginning of a beautiful story. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! That guy Paul is so talented!!!!!!!!! He should win the whole thing. One question, why is he not already singing in the opera??? A hidden talent working at a shop somewhere. I think God has big plans for him from this point on. Good for him. He should win the whole contest for sure! Tammy P.S. I loved Simon's face. Even though he didn't show it much he was in shock. Shows you can't judge a book by it's cover. www.tammyedwards.com

Yeah, he's really good. I haven't seen this seasons US version. Last year 3 of the finalists were JPF members but the show itself was so poorly done I was surprised it was brought back, until I realized they likely had contracts and had to. It was that badly done. (Even the contestants told me it was really badly done).

That's amazing. Some guy just working in a warehouse with a voice like that? He almost made me cry. If you tell anyone, I'll have to kill you...

Hey, Can't believe this guy works at Carphone Warhouse with a voice like that, I've been searching around for more info on Paul. Found a really good site: http://www.onecompare.com/mobile-news/304/23564897/vote-for-paul-potts-on-itv%92s-britain%92s-got-talent.htm Take a look and see what you think, apparently he is a forum member at www.onecompare.comReggy

Awesome!!!! The winner gets to perform in front of the Queen in a special variety performance. He will win. Just a pity that the so called pro sound man made a mess of his mic volume in his audition. Even so he still won.

Reggy and Surlive,
Though it's clear he's really talented.. I find it odd that 2 new folks found our site to talk specificly about this particular story when it's not really connected to us. Are you really musicians or perhaps are you hired to promote this story?

Yeah... as I expected.. Surlive is just a promoter. Ah well.. at least he's promoting something interesting for a change. But there's clearly a concerted effort on TV an media to promote this as if it's a grassroots groundswell of support. Now I wonder if the "backstory" is so accurate about this guy. Sure, maybe he WAS working for a phone company or whatever.. but it seems like this is just a contrived media set up to promote the show. I know the way they handled the US version last year lacked professionalism on all levels (including a lot of behind the scenes stories I heard directly from those involved) so this may be a full court press to deflect that negative attention onto a positive story. So Chris.. aka Surlive... what's the real story here?

Yeah Brian good point. It is strange that a new JPF hailing supposedly from NY should as a first post sing the praises of a Brit appearing on a British TV program. Paul Potts is good but is he a ringer? We will no doubt find out in good time.

Since Chris aka Surlive has an email address with domain bestofthenet.net it's pretty obvious he's a promoter. When you visit the domain, you get a pic of a Cartman from Southpark telling to you take a hike. Of course he posted, as a return email address, something completely different. Nice try.. but this is just a promotional spam.

Paul Potts has won as I predicted. It would be interesting to see how he entered the comp and just who is backing him. I smell another Simon Cowell rat. The guy has talent but I think he had a few helping hands up the ladder and the comp was cleverly worked around him.

Hey guys, Paul's talent made me cry a good amount of water. So, I guess a talent of that magnitude taking the prize is great...even if Simon the Rat manipulated it somehow. At least he didn't manipulate a lesser talent to win over Paul. Now, THAT really gets my goat! I hate to see someone's concubine win a contest over a true talent. (Well, I'm sure the concubine has hidden talents, but that's another discussion)

So happy to hear that Paul won. He is amazing regardless of where he came from. He is a true talent. I hope God blesses him big time and takes him a long, long ways with his dream. His voice is meant to shine!! Way to go!! Tammy www.tammyedwards.comwww.myspace.com/tammyedwards1

So here I am after a few days of letting the post 'incubate' so that I can see where the post goes naturally, without any input from me, and I get accused of being a promoter. I suspected this might happen as I saw someone else get labeled as 'street team' while I was searching through posts, but I thought for sure I was in the clear as this was a TV show and thus the promotion was obviously not needed. I understand you must deal with spammers on a regular basis, so I can't blame you... So, let me explain: Brian pointed out that my email is a registered domain and that my homepage is just a photo of Cartman. I like to control my own email address and filters, so I put up an html file with my favorite character on it as a placeholder for my domain's homepage. I've had that email address for years (it's too long though.) As for putting a separate email as my public one, well, I think the reason is pretty obvious. I hate spam! :-) As far as being from NY and knowing about a British TV show, I find it surprising you would question this being the owner of a huge website. This is the internet. That video has been seen by millions of people in just over a week, me being one of them. Check out the views on those videos. Amazing... http://youtube.com/results?search_query=paul+potts&search=And to answer your question, like I stated with my first post, I am not a musician. That is why I came here. I first found the video on digg.com along with thousands of other people but the conversation lacked substance, so I did a search for classical music forums and other keywords and ended up here. Very impressed with the size of the community I might add. Oh, and I don't know who Reggy is, but I think it's safe to assume he found the site like I did, especially since Google probably spiders your site everyday and picked up on the conversation. But hey, maybe he is a spammer and I did his work for him! Anyway, I came back here after just learning that he won the contest and I am very happy he did. I was afraid people would vote for the cute 6 year old instead. Although she is cute and performed well, Paul needed this. This was a grown man's last shot at doing what he loved. After my first post, I did a little research and it seems his story is accurate. He works at the phone place and did Opera on the side but was set back numerous times from illness or accidents. He finally got a permanent page on Wikipedia also! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_PottsI'm glad you guys liked him and that he won too. It proves he wasn't just a fluke, I guess. I'll be checking back again in a few days! Thanks, -Chris

Chris,
The PR efforts on promoting him over all others from the start was clearly orchestrated. Your site is bestofthenet.net. That hardly seems like a non industry civilians website now does it? In fact, it sounds exactly like a site that someone would have an account on who was promoting things that are supposed to be the "best on the net."
So you don't make any of your living promoting things on the net? That's a simple yes or no question.
We have no problem with people promoting stuff aggressively and out in the open. In fact, there are probably artists in our membership who would love to find some legit promotors to help them on the net. We only have a problem when a promotional company (or someone doing freelance promotional work) comes here incognito and acts like just one of the gang while promoting something. That seems to clearly apply to you.
And I never mentioned or questioned where you're from. That's irrelevent for net promotions. But why would a non musician come to a musician (not fan) website and promote a specific musician on their first post at random? The answer is you wouldn't.
We get about a dozen street teamers from labels coming here each month promoting video files or song links and band websites. We're used to it. Now and then the artist they are promoting is actually talented, like Paul is. We had 3 of the US finalists from our organization so we got a play by play scoop on all of it as it was happening. It was the most manipulated, misleading major talent broadcast I've ever heard of. And there was a lot of inappropriate stuff going on behind the scenes. And the entire thing was simply sleazy. This year, they seem to be trying to improve it (and though several acts are clearly ringers, it actually is a big improvement over last year). I know they have hired some viral promotions people in the US. Whether you are one of them or not remains to be seen. But your follow up post here is even more unlikely than the first one if you're just some random person who surfed in here.
On the other hand, if you ARE a promoter, people here are fine with that. Just identify yourself that way and no one will have a negative thought about it. We just don't like people misrepresenting themselves.

Brian,
I am not a promoter. And I will answer your questions again, only because I can't stand the fact that someone thinks I am a one, rather than someone just utilizing the internet.
***************************************** "So you don't make any of your living promoting things on the net? That's a simple yes or no question." No. I used to build websites so that domain name was going to be my homepage (bestonthenet.net), but I just continue to use it for email.
"But why would a non musician come to a musician (not fan) website and promote a specific musician on their first post at random? The answer is you wouldn't." I already explained this during my first defense and my first post. Why wouldn't I go to the root of music, a musician's hangout, to find the real opinions about another musician? I wanted expert opinion, not some American Idol fan hangout. This was Opera! And like I said, I did search for Opera related forums, but this website was the only one to come up that had a significant amount of users. *****************************************
Here I am coming back for a 3rd time, and after the fact that he won already. Call it human nature, but I just can't leave here knowing that someone thinks I am being a sneaky promoter when I genuinely had an interest in something.
You have a wealth of resources here. Some of the more experienced internet users, like myself, will sometimes come by to get some answers.
