Hey Folks,

In the wake of the King of Pop's (and Farrah Fawcett's) death, you've likely noticed that some of us here have already turned to music to help process our grief.

In keeping with that idea, I thought we could do the same, but in a more communal fashion. That is, let's resurrect the Cover Challenge idea, but use only Michael Jackson songs. smile

I've spoken to Mark K., Big Jim, and Scott C., and they all agree it's a great idea, with room for healing as well. One very legitimate question was raised, though -- WHICH SONG(s) to use? Should we as a group select only one song, as we've done historically...or because of the unusual circumstances, let folks do a cover of whatever song they want? Though I have had visions of a dozen different and tearful interpretations of "Ben" cry , I personally would lean towards the latter -- he has such a massive discography, it would be truly difficult to choose ONE favorite. Plus, if several people wanted to do the same song (either together or separately), that would be a nice combo of the two routes.

As far as "spear-heading" this process goes, Mark is straight out, and both Jim and Scott are tied up for the next week or two. Still, between the upcoming holiday weekend and everyone else's schedules, I don't see that as too much of a problem. I know Nigel set up the Soundclick page the last time, so perhaps I could convince him to do the same for these Michael Jackson covers. wink

BUT, I am getting ahead of myself. Are you boys and girls even interested in this idea? Do you have specific preferences regarding the proposed selection process -- i.e. choosing whichever song you liked, vs. Just One, voted on by questionnaire?

I will try to dig up and post his full song list but in the meantime, here at least are his albums to get your gears working:

Got to Be There (1972)
Ben (1972)
Music and Me (1973)
Forever, Michael (1975)
Off the Wall (1979)
Thriller (1982)
Bad (1987)
Dangerous (1991)
HIStory (1995) (one disc greatest hits album, one disc new studio album)
Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix (1997)
Invincible (2001)
Thriller 25 (2008) (Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions)

For the moment, then, we're just looking for feedback, to gauge interest in this Cover Tribute. If and when it gets going, we'd likely move the discussion over to the Creative Challenge Forum.

Thank you for listening, and we look forward to hearing from you!!

Since I have through time written tribute songs; (My dad, Lennon, Harry Kalas and Princess Di), I already have the music and melody for a Michael Jackson tribute song, so I'll be doing that.

I would however be interested in hearing any of our folk's "take" on any Jackson song, not trying to be a copy of one. I mean if doing one as is, sound and all, I'd rather hear the original. (Just my way of thinking). Of course, do as it pleases.

Hey John,

Thanks for your post! I'm glad to get such a quick and positive response!

As for your spin on it, I don't see why that couldn't be just another option for people. So cool, as far as I'm concerned.

Ciao for now,
Beth

I plan to work on a lyric in his memory. Since I neither sing nor play, I can't take part in the tribute challenge, but I think it's a fine idea, Beth. wink

I like the idea of each choosing their own song and style. It would encourage more entries. Personally I would cover anything except "Ben" his cheesiest song by far JMO. This song has been done to death by so many it would be a mortal sin to cover it again and again and suicide rates would certainly rise. I would like the challenge of someone picking a song for me to cover as this creates an extra challenge. It would also give me a chance to try out my new home studio and my new toys.

Hey DM,

As far as I'm concerned, this is a Tribute idea. So I have no qualms about you including your lyric if and when we get going on this. Of course, if you've already got it, don't worry about waiting for this either....

Thanks for responding! smile

Yo Yo Ben, don't need to look no mo'
We both hit what we wuz looking fo'
Wit a homey to call my own
I won't never be alone
And you, Little B, will see
You got a homey in me
(thas' right, you got a homey in me)

My apologies to anyone who actually knows rap!! wink

BTW, Jim, I like your reference to "Cheesiest", given the true subject of this song!!

On a less facetious note, thank you for your offers on this Challenge. I hope people can get excited about it....

Discography to follow a bit later!!

Thanks!

Hi Jim,

That's totally my sense of humor, so it worked for me!!

Also, I had started to copy and paste all his singles, but there are SO many, I thought it would be much simpler to attach the following link (which includes all titles and lyrics):

http://www.allmichaeljackson.com/song-lyrics.html

If anyone has any particular song(s) they'd like to consider working on, by all means post the title....so we can gain some additional insight into interest on this challenge.

THANKS!
Beth

Hi Beth

I'm really busy with the sketch show at the moment, so unlikely to have time to do a cover (this month at least). However, I will gladly set up the Soundclick station for Jacko covers and tributes.

Cheers

Oh Gosh Nigel,

I'm so sorry I didn't shoot a message to you before you saw this -- but I'm grateful you'll be able to set up a Soundclick page if this all comes to pass. smile

Also, I've been MIA a bit lately myself, so might I ask what sketch show? Comedy sketches? Because I have suspected ALL ALONG that you are ONE FUNNY GUY, Nige laugh ! As an aside, if you don't know of her already, you must check out my favorite comedienne Kathleen Madigan (she's on Youtube I'm sure). I saw her in person years ago, and since then have been a big fan. She's a total crack up!!

Anyway, thanks again, Nigel (in advance wink ). And as far as you doing a cover, you'll likely still have plenty of time. With summer -- and more specifically the 4th of July holiday -- here, a lot of folks are on vacation, etc... and we're still a ways from establishing the level of interest in participation.

In the meantime, hope all's well in your neck of the woods. It's coming down in BUCKETS in ole Massachusetts!! shocked

See ya,
Beth

Beth, I probably should forego this one. The idea of (say) "Thriller" being done as country music may be a bit much to take. For me, too.

I have suggested to folks they should memorialize the almost-simultaneous passing of Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Ed McMahon by having our hair done, wearing one glove, and handing out checks for a million dollars. (Do not--repeat, do NOT--attempt to cash one from me.)

Hey Joseph,

Seems like ages since we've chatted! shocked frown

Anyhoo, totally respect your opinion, and I appreciate you letting us know. HOWEVER (isn't there always a HOWEVER?)...who says it has to be country? If I'm not mistaken, in your "Alphabet Without U", you already have the musical makings for the afore-mentioned "ABC".....

So you think on it a little more...and if you come to the same conclusion, that's groovy. Still, this could be a fun opportunity to ....ya know, maybe RUN OVER "Ben"...stuff like that.... wink shocked

Regardless, thanks again for stopping by!!! grin

That's true--I had forgotten about The Rap. (I guess some people--yourself, for instance--haven't.) I didn't write the music, remember--a friend of mine in Chicago did (and I didn't tell him what the lyrics were). If *I* did the music, it *would* come out country music. Just one of my defaults.

So okay, I will think about it. But I ain't doin' no moonwalking. (I know where both my gloves are, too.)

Joe

Hey Herbie,

That would be great. I think between his style of music, and some of the issues raised in the Media Coverage thread, we might not see a huge response here. But that's okay...it's not supposed to be forced or anything -- just an optional exercise, a process, and/or a tribute to someone who (personality and proclivities aside) had a huge impact on the music world.

Look forward to hearing what you come up with!!

I forgot about this one.....it's actually really pretty, and I can think of at least a couple of folks who'd do a killer job on it... whistle

OK I gave it a go. Here is my tribute to MJ. Sorry the sound quality is very poor lots of distortion and other extraneous noises......still experimenting with my new setup. Will get the proper studio guys to show me where I went wrong. The wav recording was OK but somehow the Mp3 conversion went horribly wrong.

Hey Jim,

Wow, that was -- as they say up here -- "wickid good"!

Very neat interpretation....and I'm glad this challenge gave you an opportunity to experiment with your new set-up!

Have a great day!

Unfortunately, I was dead serious. I've been stuck with a sore throat for the past five days, so no singing for this Jim at the moment. frown

As soon as I've fuly recovered, I'll take a stab at one of MJs songs, though!

Hey Herbie,

Sure, why don't you just post it here. smile It's a Challenge, but also partly a Tribute....and since we haven't seen a huge response, no need to dilute things further by putting it on the Challenge Thread.

I look forward to hearing what you've come up with...and hopefully you'll inspire some other JPF'ers to follow suit!

Thanks in advance!!

Beth

I Wish I Didn’t Have To Say Goodbye frown

This is an old song but it seems appropriate – I’m pretty sure I have never posted this before. I wrote it with a guy called Richard Anderson who comes from New Zealand and he was the very first person I collabed with on the Internet. I always thought that one day I would re-visit this and tidy it up, but I hope the poignancy still comes through. Interestingly enough we did have a band pick this up as a cover.

Cheers

Nige smile

Yes, I would say this is an especially appropriate song....but it also has a lot of legs and could be commercially viable. Might I ask about your inspiration? It sounds like it might have been written about someone who committed suicide.

Regardless, this was great Nigel. Loved the tone on your vocal....and for your first collab, how cool is that? You should get your Kiwi chum to come join JPF!!

Most importantly, thank you for participating!!

Cheers back atcha!!

Hi Beth - I'm sorry, didn't want to make anyone blub, but I really appreciate your kind comments.

No, not about a suicide victim, just someone we all lost a while back - I'll PM you

Hey Scooter,

I dug this one a lot. It had me toe-tappin' and everything! The gravelly tone of of your vocal really gave it a uniquely non-MJ quality!!

Really, thanks for playin'!!

Catch ya later,
Beth

Hey Steve:

Thanks! She said something along the lines of "you sound like a dirty old man". I'm reasonably sure she was joking grin

Thanks Beth. Good idea you had... smile
