10th Oct - Well, we finally got it done. Release date is 16th November, available everywhere. Here's a cheers to everyone who helped out along the way, thank you ! .....the rest is up to fate. I'll leave the link directly below up for a few more days, if any of the good ol' JPF folks would like a copy. Many thanks, cheers, niteshift 22nd Sept - Well, we've pretty much decided to go with this version, mastered. Can tweak anything, if anything stands out, but may decide to leave it alone. To everyone involved, thank you, we're almost done and dusted..... thanks to Thomas Wind for a great mastering job, on a really hard gig.http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0LXSHD9Q24th August 2009. Just about there, thanks for the help and comments guys. I think we're just about done. The rest is knob twiddling. If anyone would like to grab a pre-master copy, please feel free. Thanks again.
http://www.yousendit.com/download/YkxMMWZPZ2pVVGswTVE9PQ11th August 2009. Well, with some help from you guys, we've tightend up, and are about to fly right. ( hopefully ) http://www.yousendit.com/download/Y1RxRGw2a0RuSlJFQlE9PQMany thanks to Bill Renfrew, from Write This Music for his help, encouragement and advice to cut the fat. And especially for Kevin, ( or anyone that likes vocal arrangement ) a 40 sec a capella to check vocal balance. 6th Aug 2009 Hey All, thanks for the comments thus far. We're up to vocal arrangement stage, just throwing ideas around. Basic vibe is 3 female vocalists who can switch lines at will. Would this work ? All female comments would be most welcome. Is it too "rowdy" or on the right track. ( And yes, we'll doing re-takes of the lead vocal )
Mix/arrangement is here..... ( sorry, download only )

cheers, niteshiftHey Guys, We're working up this song ( maybe ) Really rough, but it seems to have a good feel. Please excuse the sonics, just bouncing ideas ( and tracks ) at the moment, and any comments would be most welcome. And yep, the vocal is thin, just a run through. Thanks. Any comments about anything are appreciated. Hi Allen/Kaufman/Wood, you create a happy feel in your song. I like the violin. You clearly enjoyed creating your song. I think it would help to see the lyric. It's not for me to say about the recording quality I'm afraid but it feels you could benefit with the clearer demo to get your song across more. The ending feels unfinished to me, just my opinion. Good luck. Nadia

Hard to beat a song with a lead-in fiddle like that! It has a lot of promise, keep going. You guys are making quite a team here! It's got a little Delaney and Bonnie feel to it.

I really like that fiddle, guys. It compliments the arrangement and even sounds Cajun-ish. Good job, guys. The only nit I have is Letha's vocals sound rushed in a couple of places and would prefer her vocals to sound more "up front" & clearer in the mix.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Wow that is going to be cool! I think the parts are all worked out well and about all you need to do is polish up the recording. I could not understand a lot of the lyrics, but I got the big picture.

Has a great vibe! What is that genre anyway? Maybe cajun-rock? Letha sounds positively joyful on this! I love it. Would like to be able to understand the vocal a little better - just think it needs to be raised some. But it grabs ya! Scott

Hey, thanks guys. Just looking for a "proceed" or "not proceed" comment here.
The song obviously has legs, so we'll give it a run.
Sorry about the poor listeing experience, but there's a whole Q of songs to be worked up, and I'd like to concentrate on the "song", and take it from there.
Hopefully over the next few days, we'll get the lyrics up, and a better mix. Thanks again.
cheers, niteshift

Hi Letha, Mark, and Niteshift, The only thing that cried out "rough" to me was that Letha sounds too hot at times, and so a little harsh. Maybe a slightly bigger room verb, might help. I also like a slightly airier mix; however, as hot as this mix is, I don't hear any noticeable digital detritus. You are well on your way with this one. It's not too busy, not too sparse, it's just right. Mike

Hey nite et.al, congrats on your new super team! This is obviously a 'go' vote from me. Although the fiddle is fun and has virtuoso moments in the performance, Im not sure fiddle is the way to go for a broad appeal, though, but you perhaps already has a listing or something in mind..

Hey, I'm really into this song. I like the mix of instruments and Letha's voice, of course. I'm no engineer, so I can't advise on the mix, but it needs a tweak hear and there, I think.
I love the drums and fiddle -- great sounding.
The one thing I noticed is the song needs to get into a better dancing groove. This is my kind of country dancing music, but the rhythm needs a tweak to get it going. As Scott said, I like the vibe a lot. I sense it would be a big improvement to slow the song down just enough to let Letha use her soulful phrasing more effectively. Not much slower, just a little is all it would take. Then get some pop in the bass line by emphasizing root notes and laying back on the others. Keep the drum sounds the same, but give them a rest -- even silent periods without drums -- and this song will have a whole new dynamic sound which would require dancing from listeners.
I usually don't offer this kind of critique, because my recordings are very simple & I know little about the electronics. But this song is a dandy, and with a little grooming, I'm hearing a hit.
Good luck with it. You have a dynamite vocalist there. If you make changes sitemail me so I don't miss out!

Hi Nadia,
Thanks so much for listening and your comments. What you are hearing is just a "rough" recording. That is one thing about working with niteshift, lol, you have to have tough skin. I don't mind when he puts up rough ones, as long as we get suggestions and ideas to help get the best finished one we can get. I would rather be a little vulnerable than work on it till it is almost finished and then get ideas and have to redo it, lol.
Appreciate your thoughts

Thanks for listening. I am very embarrassed, but I don't know who Delaney and Bonnie are. I will go google them though, because I have a feeling I should know, lol.

Hi Tricia,
Appreciate you listening and your comments. I really love the fiddle too, kind of makes you happy just hearing it at the beginning. The vocals are not a final Tricia, we are just trying to put it together right first, so they will change, lol, I hope for the better by the time we finish it.

Hi Colin,
Thanks alot for listening. I hope the final product will be a little clearer, and I am experiementing with my new mic to figure out how to use it right. I will get it right soon, I hope lol.
Yes, the lyrics are a little tricky because of the tempo, but hopefully, the more I sing them, the more comfortable they will flow.

Hi Mike,
Always appreciate your great advice and critique. I am working on trying to get my new mic set up right. I have an MXL USB.006 that I bought used. It has a switch for Lo, med and Hi, and I don't even know which one to use it on. I am staying a good foot and a half away, so maybe I need to lower the volume, and figure out which way to put that switch? lol I swear I am trying.
Thanks Mike

Hi Magne,
Thanks you so much, I am glad you like it. I am sure that Niteshift is going to consider all the suggestions that you all give, he is very open to that. I got that USB mic Magne, now I am just trying to figure out the best way to use it. Do you have any idea what difference the Lo, med Hi switch makes? Would appreciate any insight into getting a better recording, and as always, thank you for your help,

Hi Kevin,
Thanks so much for taking time to offer your suggestions. I really like alot of them. Just a slightly slower tempo might make a big difference. I already had Geoff lower the key. I can hear what you are saying, I love a funky country bass beat, and when you take some of the instruments out in parts of the song. I think it gives shading and keeps the listeners interest.
We appreciate your thoughts Kevin, thanks again,
Letha

Hi Allen/Kaufman/Wood.
This is going to be infectious, once polished. The groove's awesome. Great job so far.
Fiddle and bluesy / gospel vocals are a very good combination here.
I also had the feeling of something being rushed, though. Maybe the tempo should be decreased a couple of bpms. It's always difficult to find the good tempo, sometimes it works for one instrument and not for another, then you change the tempo a bit and you're confronted to the opposite problem. Anyway, this "rushed" feeling must have its solution somewhere.
I'm looking forward to listening to the next phase. Your team did good in the past, so I guess you're on your way to yet another good one. Kudos. Take care,
yann.

Hey Yann,
Ah ! I think I found the "rushed" problem. The vocal track wasn't cued properly. Yep, we've gotta re-do the lead vocal, but I've brought it up some, so at least folks can hear it clearly.
Thanks for the comments. It's good to have a few sets of ears picking up the inconsistancies, which as writers, we always miss.
cheers mate, niteshift

Have fun, John

Hey guys and gals...
I say definitely go. Has a lot of potential. And when the mix is yweaked, it will really shine.
Running short on time. Hope you don't mind a few straight-to-the-point nits/commenst without the fluff:
1. Vocals are just a wee bit hot in places. 2. Ending needs to be tightened 3. The bass is just a bit busy for me in many places. Perhaps it's just me, though. 4. Super vocals by Letha (yeah, big surprise there!) 5. Nice arrangement 6. Somer harmonies on the chorus would be awesome! 7. Fiddles are EXCELLENT! 8. Go with it!
Gotta go. Sorry for being so abrupt. See ya, and good luck with it.

The fiddle playing was sooo good, and Letha's voice, as always, is a treasure (I'm a big fan by now!) The ending faded out too soon, I thought. I really liked the energy of the song and the melody. The "KAW Machine" is strong!

Hi Nite, Letha & Mark,
Wow! Another great sounding song that will, by the time you've tweaked it to death, be another masterpiece! I really liked the fiddle, but all the music is really tight and the vocal, well, we have come to expect nothing but sensational and you have delivered! You make a great team!

Hi there Yann, John, Al, Sherry, Polly and Ricki,
I just wanted to thank you all for taking the time to listen and all your help and comments. I appreciate Niteshift and Mark's patience too, because I am working with a new mic and I guess that takes a little bit of trial and error for me to get used to using it right. Also, this song is a little unusual, but I kind of like "unusual", lol.
Thanks again, and hopefully we will get something down in the near future and maybe you can take another listen, if you would like.

Gotta go. Sorry for being so abrupt. See ya, and good luck with it. Hey KAW, KAW! Thank goodness I caught up to Alan's response....he said everything I wanted to say....but in a succinct manner. I thought I better hop on his bandwagon but quick! I too would love to see the lyrics...might help us pick out the teensy problem areas. Finally, I do have one other concern -- but it's a selfish one. If Letha's getting all these accolades for her singing (duh!) on all these energetic songs....will she ever come back to sing some weepy old thing for me??? Still, if you got it, you got it -- so baby, you gotta FLAUNT it!! Really looking forward to seeing where y'all take this! Beth

Hi Beth,
Thanks alot for stopping in and glad you are liking it. I will post the lyrics here, maybe Niteshift will copy them up to the beginning lol?
A New Plan ©2009Kaufman/Allen/Wood
I ran around from town to town looking for the perfect life Hopin someday I’d find a man and make him the perfect wife Look at me I’m 33 still looking for who knows what I wanted a man, that was the plan ain't givin that plan up
Ohh Girls Gonna get myself a brand new plan Gonna get myself a brand new man
Searched high and low and in between thinkin I’d get it right I’ve glamorized and modernized wore my jeans a little tight Changed my mind, the man of mine's gonna want the real me My flannel shirt, old fashioned ways and jeans where I can breath
Ohh Girls Gonna get myself a brand new plan Gonna get myself a brand new man
Bridge: They say if I stop searchin that a man will come to me So I won’t run and I won’t chase I’ll wait so patiently I’ll wait around till luck has changed and life is good to me
Uh oh, uh oh, look here
Sittin in a restaurant a eatin lunch, content as I can be A look over there a big strong handsome man is a lookin at me They were right, take that advice stop chasin after men Let them pursue they’ll come to you , Ahhhhhh
If you come up with a new plan Get yourself a brand new plan Ahh, come up, with a new plan might get yourself a brand new man
Chorus Ohh Girls Just get yourself a brand new plan Might get yourself a brand new man
Gotta get a new plan to get new man, ahhhhhh A brand new plan to get a new man, mmmmmm Ad lib
and Beth, don't you worry I still love to sing those "weepy old things", especially some of the ones you write, lol.
Thanks again,

Hi Lynn,
Thanks so much for such nice compliments. Yes, this one is a little different than what you probably are used to but I loved doing it, lol, it is fun trying to get it into shape.
I posted the lyrics as close as I can get them right now.
Appreciate you listening, and hopefully before too long we'll get another tighter version up to hear.

Hi Wendy,
Thanks alot for listening. That is always a good sign if it makes your feet want to move. This one is one happy go lucky crazy country song, lol, but it makes me smile.
Yes, I think we have a name lol, KAW Creation. Kaufman, Allen, Wood. The only way I wouldnt agree was Wood, Allen, Kaufman lol, cause I just wasn't feeling that.
Glad you liked it Wendy, and thanks again.

Hey All, I posted up the lyric sheet, which may help with the quiet vocal. If we get the small lyrical changes sorted out bfore doing the final vocal take, that would be cool. Any inconsistencies lyically wise, pointed out would be cool. To me, it all fits, but then again, I ain't no lyricist. cheers, nieshift PS - Beth, yeah, I've been trying to quieten Letha down for some time. It doesn't work, she loves to belt it out. ( I'm going half deaf here ) But maybe one day we'll get her to do that beautiful number.

PPS - had an od thought last night. I can see Letha, along with Dolly and Aretha, all in the same studio. 3 part split, and 3 part vocal harmony.
Dreaming ? Most deinitly, but that's the way it sounds to me.

one thing lyrically to consider might be on the Chorus:
you Have:
Gonna get myself a brand new plan Gonna get myself a brand new man
Possibly:
Gonna make myself a brand new plan Gonna get myself a brand new man
Also put an "e" after "breath" so it reads "breathe"
Just some ideas. Have fun.:)
Best to all, Lynn

Hi Guys,
I like the song and I think it has lots of potential. It is not too rowdy - I like Letha's belting it out although her recording might not be up to par.
On the downside, it sounds like a song written by a committee. Bluegrass fiddle, definitely un-bluegrass drums, warm background oohs (which sound good BTW), letha's brighter gospel/soul vocal, etc. There are a couple of stops after the choruses that sound like they aren't quite sure if they are stops or not.
There may be a problem with the rhythm - there is a high hat in there that sounds like it is in double time compared to the basic drumbeat. The fiddle also sounds like it is in double time.
The problems I hear are all fixable if you decide you want to. The basic song - lyrics, chord progression, melody, beat, all sound good. Three female vocalists would work well, although Letha can carry it alone.
Keep at it!
Colin

Hey Joice, Ya said it well, "focus and tighten". I couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you. ( Are you reading my thoughts ? ) Hey Colin, Thanks for your comments. You've brought out a number of issues which we've been concerned about, especially the stops and what works and what doesn't. The "committee" comment is most relevant. It's very cool to be in a position with co-writers where everyone is flinging ideas around, and having too much in a song, and deciding which needs to be cut. It's a real priviledge to be working on a single song with 2 other crazy songwriters ( No 1 crazy dude is determind on a day by day basis ) and be inundated with ideas, the best of which we'll keep, and sideline the others for other pieces. I'll check that hi-hat, that's one thing I haven't thought about. Thanks mate, for your time and input. cheers, niteshift

Hi Geoff,
This is sounding pretty good.
I don't have any problem w/ the backing vocal PARTS but at the end where they're pretty busy, they're also pretty buried in the track. What I hear sounds good.
Backing vocals are such a CHORE for me. But they're often so critical. Kudos to you for making this element right.
Peace,
Ian

Hey Ian,
Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, it's gets a little crowded in places at times. We've had similar comments. Time for the hatchet job. All extraneous pieces must go. Begone !

I really like the textures of the sounds here. I think that the rounded backing vocal are good. They give a nice softening effect to the out front lead vocals. In fact, I might suggest taking down the lead vocals a touch - they sound a bit harsh.

Hey Michelle, Ooh, I like "hit song", you can drop by anytime.... hope you're right. Hey Tom, Yeah, the lead vocal is a little raw. We have a couple of small rewrites to do, so will smooth it out when we do the final takes. Glad you like the contrast of the bv's. Thanks for taking a listen. cheers, niteshift
