Hello, Here's my additions to Ellen's wonderful new song. After listening to her song for about 100 times, I came away impressed with her solid guitar playing. She ought to get a little combo together and play out. I've been communicating via PM, but she's gone off somewhere -- so she hasn't heard this version yet (crossing fingers and hopes she like it). I have a version with some bongos, but I just couldn't put that off at this rhythm/tempo. A little sparse on the percussion as it is now. (I am not that good on percussion -- yet) MP3: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9028692 Three Speed Trani(c) Ellen MoseleyEllen Moseley: guitar, vocal Kevin: bass, percussion, slide/electric guitar ********************************************************** Note: I removed the link to the version with bongos -- it wasn't too good. The thread with Ellen's original guitar/vocal is here: http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/810432/Kevin

Kevin,
I like the song and it definitely is enhanced with the addition of the bass, percussion and slide. Not sure about the bongos.
You might want to very selectively make some of your percussion more deliberate and louder, plus add a little reverb.

Thanks Colin. I added some reverb on the percussion to the current version -- I'll see what happens if I add a touch more. You might want to very selectively make some of your percussion more deliberate and louder This is all about touch, I think. I am using a roland spd-20 for the drumming. Sub suggested cranking the "touch" to 100% so everything was the same volume, until I learned better how to use it. I haven't done that, yet, though. Thanks for stopping by. Kevin

The slide adds a lot to this. The other additions are good, but buried a bit. I think real bongos would be great in this. Neat song Ellen.

Those are some nice additions, Kevin. Tasteful and they support the song without getting in the way of anything. Kudos to you for doing it. Nice song, Ellen - I've had three vehicles with 3 speed stick. The last was a 66 Ford Galaxie with three on the tree... Wish I still had it - but the brakes were shot. Hmmm, maybe a metaphor for a different song. Scott

One day I will be driving down the road and a song will come on the radio and I'll say. Hey! I know that song. It was on JPF. Maybe it will be this one. I am really impressed by some of the songs I have been hearing. We have some real talent here don't we.

What a cool song! It has the attitude of Cheryl Crow's "Strong Enough". Ellen, I LOVE your rich voice and this lyric is great. Kevin, I love your guitar tone here. Couldn't hear the bass very well, but what I heard sounded great. You're becoming "Kevin The Enhancer" around here!

Hi Kevin,
Well, Brother K., ya done good! I especially like the slide. I agree with Colin about making the drums more definite.
Thanks for all the time and work you've put into my song! And for the super gracious words you had to say about my guitar playin'!
Gettin' myself out there with a lil' combo would be a dream come true!
thanks also to all y'all who stopped by to listen and comment!
yerz, Ellen

Howdy Ellen & Kevin, Gus here. My wife Pauline and I both enjoy your vocals a bunch, good lyrics, nice metaphors with "NOT AN AUTOMATIC". My only thought on that was, when you gotta "wornout clutch" your rig won't move no matter what you do.....ha ha But with a "screwed up clutch" or " bunged up clutch", you need to fiddle with it, & maybe you can keep going. It's all just semantics though, leave it to me to bring up nonsense, just to read myself talk.....Nice Hijack too Kevin......Gus

Hey Guys. How fun is that. Ellen, Damn that is too good. Three speed Trani with a warn out clutch. I think only you and I are going to remember three speeds. Unless cars last longer down there in Fla. You know I try to explain to people that in order to make a song interesting you have got to reach inside and give something of youself. Something unique, distinctive, honest and true. And girlfriend if someone needs an example of how that is done I will tell them to listen to you. Also I can tell the care you take with your songs. There is obviously a lot of thought and work that goes into these songs that you make sound so easy and casual.
Kevin you are a good dude. And you picked an excellent song to work on too. And you did good. I just wish you could move Ellen's guitar to the right a bit. I think that would open up the sound quite nicely.
Good work, Tom
PS with all due respect to brother Steve from Santa Barbara (I'm origionally from Oxnard dude!) I have driven lots of cars with just treads of cluth left and that clutch would be called worn out in my opinion. I know your are technically correct Steve but I think that terms works well.

Rick: Everything sounded OK to me on headphones, but I know what to listen for. I'll re-listen on speakers again and see if I can adjust the mix. Bongos would be cool, but at this slow tempo, I could never get a groove going. Thanks for stopping by!
Scott: I enjoyed doing the slide. It takes a lot of takes for me to be "in-tune", but it's worth the effort to get that different sound. Ellen did great here! Thanks for listening.
Bill: Yes, this is a very good song and the "goodness" of it all attracted me to it. I hope I helped it. Thanks for the visit.
Calvin: This reminded me of a Calvin/Joice song, so I am not surprised you liked it (ha, ha). Thanks for stopping by and listenining.
Polly: Ha, ha. I am not sure about the "enhancer" title (especially around this crowd). The bass sounded OK to me, but sometimes the "presence" of the bass is enough. Ellen did do great singing here, didn't she? Thanks for giving it a spin.
I'll come for the others later.

glynda: Thanks for the visit and listen -- I know it is tough on dial-up.
Ellen: It is going to take me quite awhile to do anything decent on drums/percussion -- that is as good as it get for right now. Yes, your guitar playing was solid, even if the guitar is upside down! Does that mean that the thicker bass strings are closest to the ground the way you play it????? I guess finding folks to play with is tough -- but it may happen.
Janet: Redwing! Thanks for stopping by and listening. Ellen is mighty good and writes good lyrics, too.
Gus: Thanks for coming by and giving it a spin, it is appreciated.
Tom: "Something unique, distinctive, honest and true": I think that is what drew me to this song. There was something different about it and the more I listened, the more fascinating it became. How many folks with compare themselves to "three speed trani with a worn out clutch"? Thanks for the kind remarks.
I'll come for the others later (oh -- there are no others!).

Hi Kevin,
You did good, again! What you added rounded out an already pretty fine song. I like your new title, Kevin, the Enhancer! Now playing at select theaters.

Ricki: Thanks for stopping by. It helps to have a good song to start with. ... and the song works just fine without the additions. Or, ahem.., the enhancements!
