After posting my heavy ballad, "Reach For the Line," and my sleepy paino solo, thought I better post something a little more fun. Ironically, this song was written after one of my daughters (who was nine at the time) told me to "lighten up" and write something she could dance to. Guess she was getting tired of the ballads too. If and when I revisit this one, I will put a live drum track on it and record the vocal again. If something else jumps out at you, let me know. Thanks www.soundclick.com/tracyharrisYou Go Virginia Well Virginia joined the girls out the other night She's such a sweet girl, just a little uptight A little prim and proper if you know what I mean She likes to join the fun but keeps the party clean Well I'm not sure what struck Virginia that night She seemed a little more lively, not quite right And when the band began and the lights they dimmed She got herself up on the table and started to scream She swung her hips to the left and then to the right And then the arms joined in with a determined might She started whipping her hair from side to side And that's when the party began... Chorus Oh, let's go, don't stop Virginia Got to shake and move, show them what's in ya Gotta let it out, you go Virginia Gotta shake it till the morning light Well Virginia kept the crowd going song after song The boys were hootin and hollerin all night long Gotta tell you it was quite a night She threw them move after move in that bright spotlight I gained a whole new respect for Virginia that night All that shakin and movin, no stage fright She was the life of the party, she didn't care Opened her mind to the music, let it take her there Repeat chorus Instr. Chorus

Tracy,
I really like this and don't be mad at me, but with the first three verses being so similar, it started to sound like a Laurie Berkner song, I am just saying maybe doing something to change up like that third verse would kick it out of that. But I do really like it.

Tracy,
Good songwriting! Lyrically, you set up the story by telling us that V was a little uptight but you never explained what got her going that night so I was left wondering what changed.
No nits musically. I like the guitar and the key change, etc.
Your vocal sounds a little serious - not quite happy enough. Hard to explain but you need to sound more cheery when you redo it. Maybe a glass of wine first?
Good one though.

Tammy, lol, am I that intimidating...you are welcome to your opinion. I hear what you are saying. Firstly, It is odd that this song even has three verses up front - not sure why. Secondly, when the chords stay simple, sometimes it can get monotonous. That is why after the first chorus, the key completely changes so the listener doesn't get bored. So I get the comment. If I end up back in the studio with this one, I will give your suggestion some thought.

Colin,
Thanks for your comments. I agree on the vocal. This was recorded a few years ago and I pretty much needed something more - like a shot of whiskey - to even open my mouth in front of the mic. I've come a long way. It is on my list of things to do! Lyrically, I thought that I was suggesting that normally V is uptight when we go out, but tonight she came in a different mood..."I'm not sure what struck Virginia that night..." Does it imply that or do I need to word it differently?

Great Boogie woogie song!!! This is a roadhouse song!! I can almost hear the crowd whooping and hollaring in the background. I can see Keith Richards, a cigarette hanging from his lips, half hungover, making that lead guitar sing. And isn't that Mick Jagger strutting back and forth on the bandstand?
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. In fact, I think I'll play it again.

I always look forward to your stuff, it is always top-notch! I see you mentioned re-doing your vocals on this one. For me, there is no energy in the vocal treatment here -- it is pretty straight. Fix that and it will improve 100%.
This could really be a great little rocker.

Tracy: You are still my star. As Steven Tyler would say, "beautiful!". Who on earth is Laurie Berkner? Don't care, never heard of her. "No energy in the vocal treatment"? An absolutely unwarranted comment. I really enjoyed this. Ott

Hi Tracy, Maybe I'm easy, but I couldn't find anything wrong with the song. It kept me moving all the way to the end. GOOD JOB. Calvin http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewart

Does it imply that or do I need to word it differently? I understood that part but I think the story might be enhanced if you somehow told us why - like she won a million dollars, had a new boyfriend, got fired, drunk, laid, whatever......

Tracy You! you're good! This diddy just needs a few little moves to even yet improves 1- The Chorus is really really nice... Very catchy and singable, can just see people singing along. It's a natural. 2- The chorus is being hurt by the arrangement as is the song. 3- The three verses is a nice idea to change things up a bit, but it's not working on this one. Spread it out and give us that one last verse, that third verse story ending one. Ya know. So maybe two verse chorus, two verse chorus solo/lift one verse chorus out... The three early is hurting it definitely. 4- Lots and lots of well crafted effective lyrics in here ESPECIALLY the chorus. Thought it could of use one or two WOW lines.. Even though the song has the great simple theme and the dance catch on factor like an "Achy Breaky Heart" still I love one of those whoa! never would of thought to say that line, the extra clever one or two... That's it. Perhaps since her name is Virgina you could find something to use from the state itself to make that clever line. I know, I know don't get hokey but it's Country and it's ALL about getting hokey so give it just a little dose, enough to impress those certain folks who are looking for it. Like a publisher, label or Artist who see's loads of songs. Great work, all your stuff so far is. You have the knack now just nail it down or pull your swing and knock it out of the park Mike

wonderful Tracy. Even Helen was doing a hand jive, and I thought she would find her feet again.
I can't see anyone not dancing to this. And it would make a great video for youtube, with dancers etc... and of course Virgina on the table top.
God Bless Roy and Helen

Great song Tracy. I think this would appeal to the country honky tonk crowd, big time.
I thought lyrically it was great, except for the last verse. The words, "gained a whole new respect" and "opened her mind to the music" were weak. Since that is the punch line of the whole song - I'd fix. Vocally you sounded great. Love your voice, very smooth and tight. But more energy would rock this song. Let'r rip girl! Don't hold anything back. It's a wild-and-crazy type song.
I agree with Mike, where he says you gotta get to the chorus sooner. That's what gets them dancing. And maybe work in a few more "wow" words.
I thought the production sounded great, but I'm no expert.
Great feel to the song. If you decide to record again, I hope I don't miss it!

Nice one Tracy Infectious groove and fun story line. Since you are going to redo it, I wanted to add something helpful. Looking through the other post I see Mike had some interesting. suggestions. I would probably try rewriting the last verse. By this point in the song we already know that she is Shakin and movin. and that she is the life of party. With her dancing on the table in the spot light and The boys were hootin and hollerin all night longMaybe make that the bridge or a verse that lets us in, on what happened to cause such a change in little Ms. Virginia. Look at me trying to sound like I know what the hell I'm talking about...

Hi Tracy Looks like you got some great feedback here, so don't let it collect dust, that would be a real shame. So get out of the ballads, listen to your daughter, cause when you finish it, it will be worth all your efforts. I love what you have, very catchy, so TWEAK it Okay. Sorry, I'm a bit bossy. Hugs Michele
