I was a member here since 2008, and I learned TONS as far as songwriting, the legal aspect of such things, the mechanics, but most of all, the enduring friendships. This website is a magical place, a launching pad for many creative minds, a nursery for newbies, and a refresher for those who achieved but need to be reminded that they were once the nervous novices who needed a supportive, encouraging nudge. I have learned to write from the lyric and mp3 forums, just from observing them at first, and then finally getting up the nerve to participate. When I did, the response and criticism was so kind and constructive! It provided me the springboard from which to leap as a musician an songwriter, and even though I'm not "known" or considered "marketable" in the traditional musical marketplace, I'm in an all-female band which is embarking on an exciting journey of our own, because of what I learned here, and I just want to touch base and tell everybody how much I've missed you all and how much fun I had in the shout box and how much I learned in the forums! I love the collaborations we did and I really love all the music I heard here...(Mark Kaufman...cough, cough) I just love you all so much! I hope to get back here more and participate, and God bless y'all! smile

By far the most important thing I have learned is

No one is required to like your songs.

Well as one of the early members, I echo what you say. JPF has really allowed me to fail enough to actually write some good songs.

So if there is anything to add, it is that writing is like any art. You have to produce lots of stuff to find a few gems.

Since joining way back when, I've written and posted hundreds of lyrics, but I cannot claim to have written too many that I can honestly say where really good.

But man what a feeling when you do, and people actually begin singing your songs because they can't get it out of their heads.

And yes, welcome back!

If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

All is indeed GREAT! Many changes are taking place in my life right now and I certainly have my challenges, but musically I'm more active than I've ever been...involved in 4 projects at the moment. The one most near and dear to my heart is the all-female band, a musical situation I've wanted to be in since I was a little girl and used to watch "Josie and the Pussycats", LOL! Anyway, I had to pick up the bass for said project, and after a year became competent on it anyway, then we went through some changes and now I'm on rhythm guitar and singing lead. The songwriting is coming along in bits and pieces, I don't force it, but when I hear something in my head it's a lot more viable and substantial these days. Looking forward to sharing the latest on the MP3 forum. Soooo good to see your familiar faces, really missed this place! smile

Be careful not to drive your fellow blondes into breakdowns trying to keep up with all the multi-tasking...

Polly asked me to tell you all that she's having troubles logging in... not sure what might be the cause as it appears she posted again above and the problem may already be solved. If so, let me know Polly. My internet has been down all day and just came up. (Good old Comcast! ack!).

Yes, thank you, Brian, it was resolved! smile Yes, Tom, it was quite a transformation, but I was up for the task. One of my other musical endeavors as of late is an acoustic duo with my fiance, Michael. Playing acoustic definitely strengthens the fingers for anything on electric guitar, so power chords are easy peasey! As many of you know, I have Scleroderma, so I don't take ANY day for granted! I want to make the most out of the time I have left that I'm ABLE to play, playing as much as I can. I don't think about the day I won't be able to, I only think about being able to, and progressing each day. I'm having the most productive, satisfying time with music right now that I've ever had, and JPF definitely put me on that path 4 years ago! I felt compelled to come back here after my absence and give some shout outs and kudos, because musically, this site literally transformed me in the way that I think about music and my personal abilities. If it wasn't for the encouragement I received I'd probably not be doing much of anything right now. The amazing talent I've encountered here really lifted me to a new level as well, collaborating as well as just experiencing some of their music, was such an eye-opening, gratifying experience! I really did miss the place, been real busy, but I'm back for a spell, look forward to exploring the lyric and MP3 forums and maybe putting up a song or two of my own.

Brian has taught me to be persistent, follow my dream, keep doing what I love, stop jumping the gun until something is a for sure thing and is released, to be true to myself and don't let others stop me from doing what I believe in. I've also learned that I'm not going to please everyone, that sometimes the only way to learn is the hard way (after being given advice that could have saved me some heartache, but instead ignoring it out of stubborness), and to get out of my comfort zone and follow my heart.

I've also learned a lot of things outside of JPF, but this is a good community of creative minds to take newbies under their wing and teach them a thing or two before pushing them off the branch to fly on their own.

I had to look up Scleroderma which sounds unpleasant, but I see it includes a thickening of the skin which should help in the music business.

okay.... um... I knew the name scleroderma sounded familiar... but couldn't place it.
First site I hit was wikipedia... and the statement at the top of the page said "if you're looking for the mushroom page...it's a different one" and I remembered ... that's also the name of a truffle like mushroom that my husband the mycologist used to find in the forest. (pretty nasty looking thing as I recall) (doesn't seem to be related in the slightest)
but now I see your condition. yeah... a little extra thickness on the finger tips wouldn't hurt (if only that was all it was)
hang in there Polly.... I know my mediocre at best guitar playing will grind to a halt when my carpal tunnel worsens again.. but your playing seems to be of more importance.... since I'm not performing anywhere much, mostly church and a small community choral group

Hey Polly! Good to see you're still at it. I've been absent more often than not due to OT at work, but I'm so glad I caught this thread and found out what you've been up to.

I've been working with a co-writer and we've been writing up a storm. www.stoneybeachmusic.com

Slowly but surely, with the help of my JPF team, I've also been having my own songs demoed. www.soundcloud.com/rickib

There are a lot of new faces here at JPF, I sometimes feel like a newbie myself, but I will always be grateful for this place and everything it's done for me. Nothing else quite like it. Welcome home,

Ricki

Hi Polly:

It's great to see you back on the boards. You are a legend here at JPF and your presence has been sorely missed. Reading your posts was more entertaining than watching SNL and I'll be surprised if the "visit-ratio" here at JPF does not begin to rise accordingly.

Welcome home!

Thanks, all! Yeah, we sure had a lotta laughs! Glynda and I would nearly piss ourselves on a Friday night in the shoutbox! I'll be participating more on the MP3 forums, since I have a couple new tunes myself I'd like feedback on. One of the great things about getting engaged and moving in with my Lovey is that he's got all kinds of recording capabilities. That used to drive me nuts when I'd write something and have to wait forever to get it recorded! Anyway, he inspires me and he musicates my stuff, so we'll be doing quite a bit of writing and recording.

Ahhh....The blackmail opportunities that camera must hold.

I'll echo what everyone else has added concerning welcoming Polly back and what they've learned...As for what I've learned:

Comfort Zones suck, creatively speaking. Gotta shake it up now and then.
