Tim and I really appreciate Zeek adding some great guitar track to this. THANKS ZEEK!

http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11998760&q=hi

This is a song a friend of mine, Tim Tovar, wrote. It is based on a friend of his (Howard) that bought a Fender guitar when he was 27 for about $300. He made $150.00 per month back then so it was VERY expensive. It's a 1958 Fender with a 3 tone starburst and a maple inlay neck. He has kept the guitar and the original amp that came with it and is very rare too.

My understanding is that the guitar was worth $60,000.00 at one time. With the economy it's probably come down just a bit. The picture on the soundclick link is Howard when he was younger and that IS the guitar he is playing. He is in his 80's today.

Tim came over and played the song and also sang the lead vocals. It was so good that I just had to put a full production to it. I had another friend, Beau Batts, lay down the bass track and I did the rest.

Hope you enjoy!

THIS GUITAR STILL KNOWS A MELODY OR TWO
STILL FINDS THE HARMONY WHEN I AM BLUE
CAN MAKE ME CRY

THIS GUITAR REMEMBERS BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNG
WINE AND SONG AND TOO MUCH FUN
NEVER ASKING WHY

THIS GUITAR HELPED ME THROUGH THE DARK OF NIGHT
TILL THE PROMISED MORNING LIGHT
AND THE FIRST SPRING RAIN

THIS GUITAR FAITHFULLY JUST CLOSED HER EYES
KEPT PERFECT TIME AS LIFE ROLLED BY
HELPED MY EASE MY PAIN

CHORUS
THIS GUITAR HAS THE SHOULDERS OF A LONG LOST FRIEND
SEE'S MY TEARS AND HELPS ME SMILE AGAIN
SAYS I'M NOT ALONE
THIS GUITAR LIKE A LOVER ON A STORMY NIGHT
WHISPERS EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT
BABY COME ON HOME

THIS GUITAR IS NOT THE SAME AS IT WAS NEW
IT'S SOUND IS CLEAR AND IT'S VOICE IS TRUE
I KNEW IT FROM THE START

THIS GUITAR TAKES ME BACK TO A TIME OF EASE
BACK TO THE MUSIC OF MY MEMORIES
THE MUSIC OF MY HEART

CHORUS

Powerful. Beautiful. Deeply sentimental. It made me want to pick up my guitar and give it a great big hug. This is full of great writing and touching details and I loved it from start to finish. The line "has the shoulders of a long lost friend" was especially good. The vocals and arrangement were perfect and the minor chord that signaled the start of the chorus was a nice touch. I loved it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ricky,

This sounds like one of the best love songs I've ever heard.
I can't say enough good things about it.

That sounds great. A well written piece for sure. But I must admit I was waiting for a cool solo on that '58 Strat........

Hey Colin,

Thanks for checking this out. Tim is going to see Howard this week in New York and I'm sure they will be getting together to play as they always do. He will try to get some of that guitar recorded and I will try to slip it in somewhere. I agree that would make the song even better. Check back in about a week or so. If I get something I can put in I will update the link. Thanks.

Nice.
I was kind of expecting a melodic change after the first six lines.
It doesn't really need a solo from the '58 Strat, because it's not menmtioned anywhhere in the song. If you hadn't told us upfront about it, we wouldn't know that it exists. This way, the song could be about anybody's guitar.

It reminds me of an instructional video by Chet Atkins that I watched once. He said that once you start playing guitar, you'll always have something to do and a friend to do it with. I don't remember the exact quote, but that's the way it is.

I like this song very much and I agree with Kurt that the song is universal.

Thanks B Wayne, (that would be your rapper name!)

I agree. Tim did such a good job with the lyrics. Making an arrangement is so easy when the song is strong from the beginning. Thanks for taking the time and commenting. We appreciate it.

Mackie: Thanks buddy. I am writing down that suggestion and will give it to Tim.

Calvin: You hit the nail on the head as Tim wrote this from a love song perspective. Many people I've met are in love with their guitar!

Scott: Thanks Man. Glad you liked it.

Kurt: Good point. I will only put it in if it benefits the song and then those who know the story will like it even more. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Mike: Never too late to learn. Maybe you just haven't met the right one yet! (guitar I mean)

Really pleasant to listen to. Good guitar sound.
If I had to nit pick it would be the drum break at around 3:20
which sounds out of place to my ears. Could just be my ears though. smile

I didn't hear the original, but it all sounds good to me. Is Zeek doing all the electric stuff -- it sounds mighty fine, too.

Nice tune.

This is so cool....love the break. Oddly though, the early verses sounded a little like "Kokomo".......
I love this...cool sound!
Great song!

Vic,

Thanks for mentioning that drum fill. I love the one before it and I don't like that the last one does not sit well. At a minimum I should switch those two around and maybe even ditch the last one.

Thanks,

Hey Kevin,

Thanks man. Yes, Zeek is all the electric guitar. Tim came over and played the acoustic himself and it's his vocal with my harmonies. I think Zeek's guitar tracks added something that was really missing. He filled in some spaces nicely!

Hey Ricky,

Yep, it works, but my only comment would be that the vocal line doesn't live up to the song itself.

With NO offence to the vocalist, if you are going to do a tune like this, vocals are paramount. Otherwise it sounds like another night at the foward bar of the Holiday Inn.

If you took it in another direction, it would soound like the guys from the Travelling Wilburys, and everything would be just sweet.

Get a couple of great vocalists in there, play your guitars, and the song will lift in leaps and bounds.

cheers, niteshift

I think the vocal and the sentiment is much better than the "forward bar at the Holiday Inn." I think that's going a little too far with your crit. I understand your thinking completely, but think the analogy is off base.

Nite,

Thanks for taking the time. I appreciate you being honest in your comment. When Tim came over and sung this song we were just going to keep it very simple. Just guitar with some harmonies added. He did such a good job with the guitar and the vocals in about an hours worth of work, I felt I had to go with more production simply because of how good his first take was. I personally think the vocal is pretty solid and you are the first to mention it.

Glad you liked it otherwise!

Hey Rick
Love the back story.
I think the song, lyric wise, is superb.
The guitar work and the vocals sound just great and the production is right on point, as usual.

Very nice Ricky. A great tribute song and the production is top shelf. You and Zeek did a great job bringing it to life.

Ricky,

I love the chorus on this, I am glad you added the harmonies at the beginning because I was on the fence on the first chorus hitting around 1:25, but there is a nice emotional build and story and it really works and I think the vocal is nice.

Hi Ricky. I enjoyed this song very much--written very well. It is natural for other songwriters to always have ideas or optional directions with arrangements, instuments, & harmonies. There's never just one way--you guys have done a superb job as is.

I wouldn't mind hearing a larger role with the electric guitar whether a designated solo or a couple of more dominate interludes. It also might be interesting on the last two choruses to hear a female harmony, and having her do some background "tagging" of the lead singer on "this guitar" then immediately getting back in sync after those two words. (the guitar is a she) Certainly not necessary, just an idea that may sound cool, not sure. Super job with this write, nice going!

Ricky, This is a real fine piece of work. Lyrics, music, vocals and production. It's got it all. It all comes together. It sounds real good. It's a real good song.

Stevie --- Thanks man.

Tammy --- We are thinking about moving the chorus up but it's a tough decision. The build aspect I like and the payoff in this song seems to be good enough for the wait but if we ever try to pitch it I think the chorus may need to move. Thanks for checking it out and glad you liked it.

Eddie --- I like your idea for a female vocal. We will consider trying that and thank you!

Dan --- Thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked it.

Tom --- Guitar players understand this song the best! Nice guitar. Keep playing! I know Howard is although limited these days!

Thanks to all!

Therese not many I listen to all the way through. I had my finger ready to click off but I had to hear it all. Beautiful, great job.
I really like the melody.
