I thought I'd change up and post a "Country/Rock" song that I wrote a couple years back. I just re-mixed this one. Comments welcome. The song is about a misunderstanding between a couple demonstrating that things don't always appear to seem what they look to be.

YOU'VE GOT IT ALL WRONG

Vs. 1
I took a drive down my favorite road,
I had a lot of weight on my mind
The things you said to me last night,
they were anything, but kind

(Chorus )
You've got it all wrong, just listen to my song!
I can't believe, and I can't conceive, you would doubt me dear

Vs. 2
I understand what you might have thought
when you saw her holding me
She's just a friend and she's down and out,
and she needed some company

(Repeat chorus) (Guitar solo interlude)

(Bridge)
Remember dear when I took my vows,
I looked into your eyes
I promised then, and I promise now,
I'm yours until I die

Vs. 3
It's probably true that she envies you,
but put yourself in her place
No husband, no children, to share life's joys,
just an empty fireplace

(Repeat chorus)
(Guitar solo interlude) - Key change

Vs. 4
I'm sorry dear if I crossed the line
where trust begins to end
But a friend of mine, is forever,
and I'd do it all the same again
Yes a friend of mine is forever,
and I'd do it all the same again!

(Short violin solo interlude)

(Repeat chorus with ending tag)

Eddie, There's a little bit of rock 'n roll in this one. I liked the story line. But I'm on the side of the wife. I might have believed the guy about the hug being innocent until he said "It's probably true she envies you....and I'd do it all the same again." Methinks he protests too much! There's sin written all over his explanation. Keep 'em coming.

Write from your heart, not what you think others want to hear.

Dan, that's funny, I guess we'll never know for sure will we. I thought about inserting a spoken line at the end having him say, "well maybe I did hold on a little too long" .... It just didn't really fit the established ending, but would have been funny! Thanks for the listen.

Interesting concept for a song -- I am not sure a wife would buy a lot of those explanations in verses 3 and 4, though. Good song, it may be a "little too much explaining" and not enough "action" for a county-type tune, but I still think it is pretty good.

Mixing wise, I think the vocals (lead and backing) are not exactly sitting where they should be at the very beginning. As the song goes on, it seems more correct as my ears got used to it -- but I think I'll go with my initial reaction. I can't explain what to do (because I don't know! -- ha, ha). Do you have compression on the master bus? It might help if you don't (and maybe some super light reverb).

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The 'hard' is what makes it great."

Hi Eddie

I think it might be the drum and percussion is a wee bit ahead of the rest in tempo, but I had the same reaction as Kevin.

Thanks Kevin and Joyce for your listen and comments. I would like to know what type speakers that you used for listening. Joyce, I will check out the percussion track, I thought I had it alligned correctly-I was messing with it, maybe I moved it accidently forward a tad--thanks.

Not sure exactly what you mean Kevin--very beginning 1st vs there is no backing/ 1st chorus has "dups" -- which aren't supposed to sound precicely or exact together-else you could just really duplicate main vocal track which wouldn't give you the "dups" sound. 1st harmony comes in at end of 2nd chorus. The "dups" are backed off about 2.5 dec and panned to one side 40-50%. Some people aren't "dups" fans which is fine, I think it makes a cool sound with certain parts of the mix--but not with every song. Let me know if that is what you are refering to, and thanks.

Soundcloud seems to boost certain areas more which changes the mix a bit. I originally uploaded a wav but felt the MP3 sounded better from Soundcloud. This new mix is still in the tweaking stage, so I'll note your comments and may experiment with Soundcloud as well--my home system gives me better balance and separation. Kevin, I haven't mastered this mix yet and do not have that capability with my software till I upgrade--I send it out for mastering; which should improve balance and consistency--but won't do that till I'm pretty sure I have things where I like them. I don't like to pay for mastering twice. Thanks guys!

This is a real world song, Eddie smile

I'm digging it. Might be part of the reason is that I can't decide whether he is trying to convince his wife or himself smile

If the former - maybe use "She's a friend" instead of "She's just a friend". Subtle difference, I know......

Love the lead guitar part. Harmony on "I can't believe" is cool too but might want to play with that a little. Right now it seems to be coming over the right channel of my phones and feels a little light. Maybe double it and pan the other part left?
Dunno for sure - might just experiment some.

It's a thought provoking up-tempo song - don't hear nearly enough of those. smile

Well telling your wife SHE IS WRONG and saying you’d do it all again probably won’t win over the female listeners.

This song sounded more rock than country, almost teetering on British Invasion. The fiddle country’ed it up some.

On the chorus I was expecting you to go up in scale on “You’ve got it all wrong”. I think that would have added to the drama and dynamics of the music, but that’s just my thoughts.

Enjoyed it.

I just meant that the initial first few measures of the vocals didn't seem to be sitting in the band -- but then as I listened on, it meshed better. As I listen again, it seems OK to me. However, I always include first impression even if I change my mind -- because maybe there will be something to it. Your choice as always. It is easy to be wrong with initial impressions, but somehow they still seem useful to write them down.

Kevin, Joyce,

thanks--I always align my drums with the base/ but after moving the drums (per Joyce's tip) I realized the base track was a tad off -- re-adjusted both -- so drums and base I believe now are in better sync which may also be what you were hearing Kevin as well -- vocals should be setting better in the mix now. Thanks guys.

Scott, I had my harmonies all panned 30% right, pulled back to 25% and eq'd the harmony that you were mentioning--it was a little mellow. I have also noticed that the higher or softer harmonies come through Soundcloud a little weaker than how it sounds with my studio monitors or head-phones--not sure why. Thanks for your keen hearing!

Hey Mike,

Thanks for listening. You are right, there are probably a few people out there that this song could make nervous!

Iggy,

Thanks for tuning in to my station! As far as your comment about him telling her that she's had it all wrong, what if he told her she wasn't wrong? -- I think his chances are better defending himself. It is fiction, we'll never know if he is guilty -- but in my thought process, writing the lyrics, he was innocent and just being compassionate.

Yea, this song borders rock a bit, my intention was to have it on the fence, but leaning country. I kept the first two choruses standard as I wanted the major "lift focus" at the key change. I wrote this song in mind for a strong baritone vocal as well--that I'm not. Thanks for your comments and listen!

Hi Steady-Eddie,

This song feels like you just ripped out a page of real life! It feels like "out of the box" country to me!

I was thinking, as I got to the end of your song, "boy, this poor guy's troubles are JUST beginning! His wife is going to be HOPPING MAD!!"

If you did add something at the end, it might be funny to say something like, "Dear, what's wrong? What did I say? Did I say something wrong?"....and then we're left with the feeling that he's about to be fed to the crocodiles! That also brings us back to sympathizing with him, after we're not sure whether to sympathize in verse 3.

Very enjoyable listen!

Lisa

Added comedic line at song's ending per Lisa's persuasion. The ladies should the new ending!

Not sure whether to keep the humorous ending, we'll see--but it was fun hitting the back of that skillet! (let me know if you like or dislike the comedy spoken line at end)

Hi Eddie,

I listened again with the new ending and I think it sounds great! The "boink" cracks me up--I replayed that part a couple of times! I like how it makes the guy likable and it makes us realize that the couple is having a little disgruntled moment, but it's not serious and their relationship isn't on the rocks over it. CUTE addition!!

Hey Eddie,
Real nice one...the whole concept is great...like the way the chorus works...
Just my little thought here, did you try it without the shaker on the first chorus and bring it in after that? You probably already gave it a try...

Really neat
Doug
Ps loved the ending

Calvin, thanks for the listen and nice comments.

Mike K, Thanks for the listen and kind words.

Lisa, I'm glad you suggested the humorous ending, we'll see what the consensus has to say. You do make a good point about having the ending resolve the song to a degree. Thanks!

Doug, thanks for tuning in and your comments. I was playing around with the shaker track after I read your comment. What seemed to perhaps help, and I will make that adjustment, will be to fade the shaker in and out of the chorus where it will not be loud enough to be noticed, yet no sudden stop. With the Bridge, it feels right to completely stop, which I did. I may also back the drum track back a D as well. I appreciate the idea and will employ it soon--thanks!

Hey Mike, I thought you might like the "silliness" at the ending--it was fun. Thanks for checking it out again.

its a great cover story, as longas it doesn't wind up under the covers..lol..I enjoyed the story and though there's always an end in fri-end, the heart stays true.

Cool tune, Eddie. Very catchy. I think the vocal needs to be a bit more out front. It sounds buried a bit, especially when the harmony vocal comes in. Apart from that it sounds most excellent.

Real Pretty smooth vocals
and I liked the song's message
Personally I would probably not have the ending comic....but it's still cool!

Thanks Stevie and Vickie.

Stevie, when I made the last tweeks to the song, somehow I didn't save correctly, and it's "out of whack.' I should get a corrected MP3 up later this evening--you're assessment was correct, but that wasn't the first MP3 I uploaded. Frustrating, because I have to re-do some stuff!

I can always take the comedy ending out or pitch two versions Vickie--I have people like it and others not. I myself have mixed feelings about it.

Just made changes per Stevie and Doug Healy. Doug, I faded the shakers in and out at chorus and knocked them down a tad. Stevie, hopefully fixed the vocal mix an eq'ed and brought it out a little more front. I need to back off the volume on spoken end line, will do it next tweak. (No not next week, next tweak). Thanks guys, better?

Thanks Doug, I appreciate your comments and earlier sugs. Yea that's a real fiddle player--his name is Steve Kolms. I have another song where I feature his fiddle playing and a couple more in the works. He's has a good ear, which obviously fiddle players must have since they can't depend on frets. Thanks for checking back.

"I understand what you might have thought
when you saw her holding me
She's just a friend and she's down and out,
and she needed some company"

A likely story! LOL! I bet that would be a real hard sell!

The song however I would buy! Enjoyed it!

Hi Eddie,

I had another listen with your changes and it sounds great!

Hey -- one thing that keeps nagging at me when I listen to this....the line that says, "no husband, no children...." -- it occurred to me that this could turn off single women who might think that the implication is that you can't be happy without a husband and children. I thought maybe something like -- "NO ONE LEFT ANYMORE to share life's joys." Then, it could be that she experienced the loss of a husband, a mother, a dog, etc. It might have broader appeal. Just a thought!

Oh, I wanted to tell you that I find myself singing the chorus -- it's very catchy!

Thanks much Tom B.,

When you get a chance, have Toby K give me a call--I'll see if I can work something out with him! LOL.

Roger,

Welcome to JPF, and thanks for the listen, I enjoyed your's as well!

Tom W.,

Thanks for checking me out, My wife would hit me with more than a frying pan! -- (he was inconcent, but he may have had some idy's)

Lisa, Thanks for stopping back! You might be right with certain people, there is always someone looking to make something out of nothing. Country music is about how and what people really feel; within life's circumstances. It's just a fictional song with a specific story scenario, nothing more. Having a "character" that wishes to have a family life is commonly realistic--and certainly doesn't imply that feeling conversely to having a husband and children is not also realistic or acceptable. If a big fish wants my tune and wants to change that line--fine with me. Haven't had too many negative comments on the ending--looking like your idea is doing ok! Thanks again,

steady-eddie.
