The Trouble Is...

Alzheimer's is a coward and a thief
He runs off with the ones you love, steals their memories
And when I visit Dad I see his distant eyes
And I know I'm just another face he doesn't recognize

He talks to Mom as though she's still around
But it's nearly 20 years now since we laid her in the ground
He wouldn't be this safe, if he were living on his own
But the trouble is.. he thinks he'll soon be home

And he talks of how she's waiting for him there
With her Mona Lisa smile,
And her Judy Garland hair
Says she's busy in the kitchen, makin' supper on the stove
And the trouble is: he thinks he'll soon be home

I'll spare you all the grief of when he died
Suffice to say I kissed his cheek goodbye, then I cried
I knew that soon I'd lose him, but if the truth were known
The trouble is..
Yeah, the trouble is..
I lost him years ago

Though it goes against what common sense says happens to our souls
The trouble is.. I know he made it home

And he held her in his arms when he got there
Kissed her Mona Lisa smile,
Touched her Judy Garland hair
They had supper in the kitchen, got caught up around the stove
Oh, it goes against my common sense,
I know

The trouble is..
The trouble is..
The trouble is..
I know he made it home.

Hey Paul,

You touched my soul.

To write in just an honest manner about a very delicate subject is a gift indeed.

Well done. smile

Awww!
Nice one, Paul.
For me, I think the melody may lack a bit of sadness but that may be just me.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Hi Paul:

That had to be a tough song to sing... especially if it was written from an actual family experience. As always, your vocal shines, the lyric is well woven and I hope this one can become "a poster child" for the Alzheimer's Association. It is truly a coward and a thief of a malady... and is more harmful to the family and friends than to the oblivious patient. Let's hope the medical-science community can put finding a prevention... if not a cure on the "front burner"... and soon!

Thanks for sharing. ----Dave

Wow, Paul! Something I've noticed over the years is that those who can make us laugh can often make us cry. The lyric and the delivery are spot on in my opinion. Simple sincerity is something not many people can communicate in a song, at least not like this.
I get what Vic is saying, but I don't think I agree. We tend to sympathize more with those who are restrained in their expression of sadness. This has just the right feeling of reflection, compassion and wishing things were other than what they are.

Actually I think Vic is spot on. I heard this yesterday and it seems a bit joyous, major chords, happy tone, unless there is some undercurrent to the story where they want to keep it cheery for memory sakes.

Its a good melody and lyric, are they made for each other? Maybe....

Hi Paul,
In a word, "WOW"! Very poignant. Thanks for sharing. I was a nurse for 30 years, and worked with some bad diseases along the way, like Alzheimer's, Organic Brain Syndrome, and the worst I saw, Parkinson's Disease . My very first nursing home patient was a 60 year old brain surgeon who had that and the worst part was he knew everything that was happening and knew he could do nothing about it. He told me one day he wished most of all for a goodbye shot and peace.

Have a goodun,

I had a crazy idea while listening... I wonder if you could do the first half in first person?

"My son may think I’m crazy, but I'm just making my way home... "

Nice Paul! smile

cheers Vic. Maybe you're right - but I was thinking that the singer has already gone through the grieving process if that makes sense. So this was more of a tribute song than a sad one IDK smile

Thanks Dave thankfully this wasn't based on my life - but was triggered by my mother's passing last year and she had mild dementia near the end.

Hey, Paul:

It seems there may be a couple of camps here . . . I somewhat lean towards Vic’s sentiment that the melody and tone of the tune seems a tad off with the subject matter . . . or at least I can see some taking it that way, pausing to gauge what type of song this is. And, like Vic, that may just be me.

But still I liked it a ton--beautifully written, so well performed and produced. Really love what you’ve been posting on JPF—please keep sharing!

Kind regards,

Deej

As a whole, I didn’t have a problem with the mood of the music considering all he seemed to have were GOOD memories. Kinda' the point of the song smile
