Whippoorwill Hill

(c) 2014 Geneva Griffin

Verse 1
At the heights of tall cotton,
The end of Antebellem south,
Civil rest had come undone,
And fightin' had broke out..

Verse 2
This boy from Carolina,
Jumped in with his musket filled,
I really thought I was a man,
Til I reached those killin' fields..

Bridge
Today a blood brother took a bullet,
And he spoke of a place,
It was just miles from Queen City,
But a few short breaths away..

Lift
Tho it was strictly forbidden, to lift a man from the battlefield,
I stuck to the guns of my conscience, like I had tar on my heels

Chorus
We are blood.. But we're no kin..
Our veins filled with turpentine and pitch,
Just a couple'a tar heels.. lyin' beneath the long leaf pine....
Listenin' for a whippoorwill, to sing us back just one more time..

Verse 4
His face became Charlotte gray,
Like his confederate uniform,
When I lay him against a stump,
Repeated these words til he was gone..

Lift
I said brother that was a long hard climb, to get us way up here,
So rest up and smell the pine, and listen for the whippoorwill..

Chorus
We are blood.. But we're no kin..
Our veins filled with turpentine and pitch,
Just a couple'a tar heels.. lyin' beneath the long leaf pine....
Listenin' for a whippoorwill, to sing us back just one more time..

Tag
Just two young tar heels.. lyin' at the stump of an old pine..
Hopin' we both see, Whippoorwill Hill before he dies..
