Micheal,
That's because they're actually two different entities. Since the 90's Videos have taken on a role of their own in an artist's career. Where they used to be a method to showcase the song, follow the action in that, now they are art forms on their own. Which is why they cost so much.
Back when Micheal Jackson brought in a major Hollywood director, John Landis, to direct THRILLER, it really changed the face of music videos and now many movie directors get their start or increase their viablity by doing directors. Just like at one time, it was taboo for a MOVIE STAR to be involved with TELEVISION, music videos were once considered looked down upon by the "legitimate' movie industry. Now they are nearly as big. And a lot of budgets are involved. This was a HUGE BUDGET video. I don't know the cost but probably past the two million dollar mark.
But what will happen will give Taylor more of a footing in the motion picture business. You see, that is where I think she is headed. But I really believe you may see her moving BEHIND the scenes. I could see her as a main financier and producer of other artists, director of videos, possibly even directing a movie in the future. She makes very strategic moves behind the scenes and most everything has been set up well in advance.
And she stays in touch with her inner child. And I really believe that is what this is. Every kid loves to dress up in the super hero costume, tie a towel around their neck and fly through the house.
Over the past few years, the "Tom Cruise/Marvel super hero' big budget spectacle Summer movies have ruled the entertainment kingdom. And women have been struggling to conquer a slice of that marketplace, Angelina Jolie, being one of the only ones to break into it.
So I believe that is a lot of what is behind this. It is a 'woman's superhero, woman empowerment" video. Just another way to have a woman kicking some butt. I think it is part of something bigger in her overall plans.
That is why I consider these kinds of things just a "movie role" to her.She thinks in multi level stragagies and while everyone else is struggeling to figure out how to react to the "next big thing",she is planning to be it.
A big deal for younger artists are how to they transition to being "grown up?" Most end up like Miley Cyrus, Christine Agulara, and Brittany Spears and have a public meltdown in order to "shock people" into seeing them grow up.
She has not done that. She does things like "22" and lets her fans grow with her. And adds more fans. This, along with the Maxim designation, doing Victoria Secret fashion events, and the Hollywood parties, shows, Awards shows, Billboard awards, etc are all ways to let people she is growing up, yet not doing it like "Twerking her way into people's homes with her tongue all over the place."
She is saying "look at me" without sticking a tongue in your ear. And I really believe it is all part of a larger, more strategic business move.
That's my opinion. (Helps to get a little "inside info' from people involved with her also.)
