Well, what happened in jazz was that they reduced the 13 chord to basically 5 or 4 notes, no matter what instrument was playing it... Basically the progression that would best illustrate this is the II-V... If in C major, you'd play the D minor ninth and there you have your 5 notes D-F-A-C-E.... However, for the G13,what would be played is the G in the bass, and in the treble F-A-B-E, here just having to move one finger to get the sound... When playing with a bass player, guys will play just the F-A-B-E and do whatever in the right hand... That particular voicing is the most common representaiton of 13th chord, since it has "the sound"... In the guitar, since it's tuned in 4ths, all you gotta play is F-B-E-A, and you're implying the 13th, if you have a bass player, or you can play the G in the root... Because it's a voicing in which 4ths predominate, it sounds even cooler, quartal harmony being a strong staple of jazz writing... www.123writemelody.com
