I think Everett (in his own way) meant that it can be more difficult to generate a local following. I remember from my band years that the locals gave more praise to out-of-town bands than the locals. Though when we performed out-of-town we were greeted more receptively.

Don't know the psychological implications of that phenomenon (don't think I want to know). However, when a local band did achieved a degree of fame, the locals would then rally around them.
