I wrote this towards the end of last year as my daughter was applying for grad school. She is currently deciding where to go, and it appears my prediction in this song may come true, as she plans a trip next week to Temple in Philadelphia. All feedback is greatly appreciated.

As usual, you did your typical bang up job, Dave. I like the line in the last verse...

And as long as the lights are on
In his heart you'll be home

My only nit is that the guitar seems a bit muddy with perhaps too much in the effects department. The chorus sounds great but too much reverb or something? Might just be my listening system right now. Without going into detail, I'm just listening in mono for the moment as I've got my system temporarily plugged in that way. Too bad you don't play bass. Some bass, strings and light percussion would really make this soar. I mean it's good as is but the possibilities are there for future reference. Nice job once again.

Appreciate the listen and yes I hear you on the mud issue and the reverb issue. I had more guitar tracks on this than I usually do and I am not sure the mix is as good as it could be. In any event, thx for the listen. It took me 30 years to become less than average on the guitar. I can't afford another 30 to learn the bass, etc, although the name of my band is Brandi & The Root Thumpers, so I certainly could learn to thump the root note on the bass.

Hey Dave,

Great sounding melody here!! Again I hear the Seals & Crofts coming through and maybe a little Tommy James & The Shondells, probably from the guitar effects. Always loved that sound.

Even though I don't have children of my own, I experienced something similar with my niece and nephew. After Vietnam took their father I spent a great deal of time with them. You might say we kind of grew up together.

Hey Mackie,

Thx for the comments. I was actually using my old vintage DOD 401 Phaser pedal that I bought back in high school in 1978 on this track. I need to play around with the settings more on the thing but generally I have always loved the sound of this pedal. I am a bit of a pedal junkie. I use them more when I play with my band than on my home recordings, which I find usually end up straying toward the acoustic side. I appreciate your listening and hopefully we can collaborate one day, as I really enjoy your tunes. Your collab with Bobby is sensational.

Dave. This is a little different from your earlier stuff I listened to. A little more jazzy. Less folk/Americana. But it all works. The lyrics are heartfelt and convey very well the tender thoughts of many fathers as their little birds leave the nest. Good job!

Big Seals & Crofts fan here. They were a staple on my playlists growing up. I am glad you enjoyed the tune. It sounds like you were certainly a surrogate father for your niece and nephew. I don't think they have to be yours to relate to them making their own way.
