Since Old Car lyrics are being discussed elsewhere,
I thought I'd throw another into the mix...

Janice Merritt was, again, kind enough to sing this for me...

[color:#CC0000]THAT OLD CAR

when i was two months shy of birthday number six
my new baby brother appeared
no one had the time to play
i felt like i was in the way
so i ran away to the backseat of dad's chevrolet

if i could just get that old car started
i could drive until the heartache disappeared
   just me and raggedy ann
and a kitten we call sam
mom and dad would miss us when we parted
if i could just get that old car started

that fairlane parked in our backyard
would be mine come graduation in june
when mom complained i didn't pull my weight
and dad disapproved of the boys i'd date
the window facing that ford was my favorite view

if i could just get that old car started
i could drive until the heartaches disappeared
i knew a winding country road
   that could lighten any load
behind the wheel i wouldn't feel so broken-hearted
if i could just get that old car started

with the radio on and the wind in my hair
i could drive away my cares

i do the best that i can now
two kids, too many bills, too little time
i've got a rambler filled with rust and rot
my mechanic says the rings are shot
but this prayer's been my saving grace since i was a child

if i can just get that old car started
i'll drive until the heartache disappears
   when i'm feeling this unsure
   the highway holds the cure
when i get back i'll face the world strong-hearted
if i can just get that old car...
i don't need to go far..
i will get that old car started

Comments encouraged.
Thanks for listening.

THANK YOU Janice and Bud!!!

This actually proves my point...it has a different title and completely different structure. In my original lyric ( which David surely read, he's very familiar with my writing), I set up the chorus with my vss and then load the choruses with imagery describing the "old car smell"., which is EXACTLY what he did. If I saw this by chance I wouldn't give it a second thought, it's nothing like mine.

For example...I posted A lyric called "Enchanted" on Taxi and Facebook last week and a few days later a piece with the same title turned up on Musemuse. That writer doesn't know me and the piece was structured completely different. That's just a coincidence. No harm no foul.

Old Car Smell is different...David lives in Nashville and can pitch at will. He has me at a disadvantage there. The least I can do is advocate for the creativity of my own work even if legally there's nothing I can do about it.

Ps another poster Neil Cotton even noted the similarity in the writing style before I knew anything about it. Something to consider.

Bugsey, the guy who posted the lyric back in 07 on TS, jpf and Taxi was the guy who got ripped off. In my admittedly fallible opinion.

Look to your left on the list of topics. It's near the bottom. But you don't need to take care of anything. It's not actually anyone else's business.

Yeah, I got that, i was able to read something was brewing here.

Sorry Floyd your thread didnt deserve to be hijacked.

It seems Couch rebumped his lyric after a long time, and then Dreuter posted his? Or did couch do it in response to Dreuter?

At any rate, Yeah he probably did swipe your hook. Cant copyright a title or idea, you put yourself at risk for that when you put your ideas on a forum.

i dont think the song is good enough to so anything, so dont worry about it. I like his other song better

Sorry again floyd, i did enjoy this tune.

No, it is just the opposite. He is saying that your song is nothing like his write.

Janice is doing a fine job here -- as usual. Nice composition and the normal super cool production. Dang, those are some mighty fine strung together words. You are a great story teller. Maybe one day Scott Campbell will get back to writing and post some new ones. You would love his writing.

Floyd, that's a sweet melody. And the lyrics fit it to a T. And there's the usual great singing and harmony by Janice. Real old time classic sound. I like it. Man, I could even hear the Beach Boys doing it. I love that line "If I could just get that old car started." The more I listen, the more I like it. Yeah, you got a good one here.

Thanks, Bugsey. No - has not been posted here. Maybe I just have a knack for writing things that "seem familiar"... smile

Yeah, I knew that. The problem is... someone coming in here without knowledge of "that other thread" could EASILY be confused. In fact, someone e-mailed me and said "WTH is going on???!!!"

Anyway... thanks for the rest. I appreciate that... and would like to hear some of Scott's stuff... why did he stop posting?

An absolute beauty of a song. The Uke is a perfect touch here.

Janice/Floyd,

Nice job here, loved the vocals as usual Janice. Nice performance/production as well. This has a cute chronological story which I like, but not sure the story describes broken hearts or heartache really with the storyline. It works however in a general sense, just thinking that maybe a more sentimental reaction or reflection as to why she wants to take a drive might work better lyrically--not sure, just throwing that thought out.

Very nice guys, I enjoyed this!

steady-eddie.

Hi Floyd and Janice,

Another BEAUTY here! I love the metaphor of getting this old car started with getting our lives started. "We'd be happy IF ... this or IF that ... " and getting the old car started as a concrete image/example of this works great!

By the way, it took me a half hour of sleuthing to figure out what was going on with Couch’s and Bugsey’s conversation at the beginning of this thread. I agree with Floyd’s “uncool” comment.

Dan - Thanks for all of that. Janice did such a beautiful job on this. (Doubt that I would have thought Beach Boys on this - such an interesting observation)...

Floyd, I've always been a fan of those sweetly told childhood story telling songs. Especially the ones that take you full circle to adulthood. Nicely done!

Vocals are so warm and inviting. Another winner Floyd.

Nelson - Thanks so much. (That's actually a mandolin).

Very nice guys, I enjoyed this! steady-eddie.

Thanks for the listen and thoughts, eddie. Changing this one would be too hard... smile

By the way, it took me a half hour of sleuthing to figure out what was going on with Couch’s and Bugsey’s conversation at the beginning of this thread. I agree with Floyd’s “uncool” comment.

Lisa - Thanks for your wonderful thoughts - and your support!!!

Hi Floyd:

Man, what a trip down memory lane you created here... and if that were not enough... you orchestrated/arranged the composition stunningly with all the right instruments coming in at all the right places... including harmony. Someone pointed out earlier how good Janice sings this one... and they know good singing when they hear it.

Knowing the atmosphere in Twang Town these days, I would regretfully exclaim that those feckless executives on Music Row would not even listen... but this would play on our nearby Fort Worth stations again and again. Great work, my friend and I enjoyed every note and nuance of this song.

Sign me up as a fan... and I don't say that often!

Wow! The only problem I had with this, is that it came to an end. The production was perfect, great lyric, and Janice's beautiful voice all make this a killer. Excellent guys!!!

Dave - that's a lot of very nice things to say. Thank you. As long as SOMEONE appreciates what we do - about all we can ask these days...

Hi Floyd & Janice ...

Nostalgia isn't always a good trip ... but this is a wonderful journey.

Simply marvelous. Don't know what else to say, 'cept maybe you two are talented beyond what anyone deserves. And Bud ain't too shabby, either!

Thanks for way too much enjoyment. Best to all of you ...

Alan & Di
