Revisiting some older temptracks I did a few years ago. Wonder how this comes across to you? Dont really know what to do with it, I can't think of artists that are doing songs like these anymore.
Track down (thanks)
Ain’t That The Truth
I used to dream of the standard things Stuff like fancy cars and diamond rings That was in a different world Ain’t that the truth Somewhere life took a strange turn Got into things where I got burned Both by some jerks and my own soul Ain’t that the truth Now, I’m on the fence for nothing Cause I’ve let it all slide Ain’t that the truth
All of those dreams are long gone I’m on the nickel from now on Cause jobs are for the wise guys Ain’t that the truth And I can’t say that I’m too smart You’re weighed by credit card, not your heart In these miserable times Ain’t that the truth So, I’m on the fence for nothing Cause I’ve let it all slide Ain’t that the truth
Hey, you know the thing about ideals They won’t exactly help to pay your bills That’s the wisdom of the road And you can’t change the world At least I’m not that big a man
(instrumental break)
But ain’t it funny the freedom comes from giving in Now I can truly say, I don’t give a damn It will fall back on me, I know Ain’t that the truth Oh, I get how the money games are played They’ll even pay you to stay home in your bed If that will get the job done Ain’t that the truth But, I’m on the fence for nothing Cause I’ve let it all slide Ain’t that the truth
Hey Kolstad! Good to hear something new (new to me anyway) from you. You're sounding great and I like the feel to this Americana/folk. Or would that be Danishana/folk?
But ain’t it funny the freedom comes from giving in Now I can truly say, I don’t give a damn
...in which case, you don't have to "do" anything with this. You create something beautiful and share it with whoever will listen and then create some more.
Your dropbox link just spins for me - never comes up.
Edit: finally got it to play.
You have a good write here. The tempo (around 82 bpm) pretty much defines the song as "folk". Not a bad thing... However... I think if you increase that to about 135 bpm, added a solid rock drum and a couple of standard rock electrics, this would SOAR - like a Springsteen classic...
Solid gold from my end of the listening room. What to do with it? For starters, keep it in your catalog and find a way to get it "out there" in the world of listeners who count and can cause the magic to happen. I hear this one as a cross between "folk and blues" and it deserves to be heard. I can think of three "Iconic" singers who would take this straight up the charts for you... but I don't have a magic wand or inside track to tell you how to reach them. Pitching is a bitch!
It needs a "build" to it as the song progresses and I'd love to hear our JPF Genius, Michael Zaneski take a crack at it.
If cash is not in great supply at your household, would you mind if I "pay Mike to do a demo for you?" I don't have a dog in the hunt but I hate to see a great song languish. PM me if you have questions or need answers. Regardless, my friend... I wish you success with this well told story. ----Dave
Wow....we really like this -- both the write and the vocal. floyd nailed it with his suggestion of how to make it "soar." We can readily hear it that way. Strong song!!

Check out our new album Janice Merritt "Am I Blue Enough?" on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Amazon and others.
Ricki, floyd, Dave, Janice & Bud, Thanks guys, some great ideas. Wouldn't have thought to pace it up. Gotta try that. Springsteen huh! Dave, not looking for collab or demo, but MZ is a killer producer for sure!
I completely understand your wishes on this. My offer was made to emphasize how much potential this song has. Please keep us in the loop when and if convenient. Meanwhile, my best wishes for success to you.
Yes, Mike has done some great work on seven demos for me. I think he wishes I would not tend to be such a "street teamer" about his talent but good work deserves high praise,
Just a heads up, I did release this to streaming platforms yesterday on my Magnetic Heartland artist name. See how you like my finished version, I'm really proud of it.
Thanks to all who provided feedback on this song in these forums. It really helps to get work done!
