I don't think eminem is a genius.

I also don't think it's all that warranted to mock one of his fans out of hand for thinking he is.

He certainly has changed the face of hip/hop for better or worse. He brough social commentary back to it, and is faster and wittier than most of his contemporaries. He's not my cup of tea, but eminem is certainly one of the 5 most influential rappers of all time, period. So someone who like hiphop might not be completely out of bounds to consider him rap genius.

However -- I will disagree with songbird on one point... I wish Hank were still alive. And his style of music is *not nearly* dead. It is, in fact, experiencing a revival.

His son isn't half as interesting as he was.

But Hank III is a different story entirely.

Well kit..

I wasn't mocking anybody.......

I think it's ludicrous to call Eminem a genius.

that's my opinion.

His fans have their opinion..I have mine...
What's the big deal ?

My guess is that anyone who finds Eminem to be a genius would find my list of geniuses equally off base in their minds.

That's cool.......

Some folks ain't paying much attention, and some haven't got a clue whats going on. Songbird, I'd suggest you do a little more reading about and listening to country. You might find yourself retracting that statement. Sure, country kind of went pop over the last decade, but it's all about to change back. Has been slowly if you didn't notice. As far as rap moving into country, never happen.

Hi Harry!!!!

I do not! recall ever ever saying that rap was about to invade country. But I did say that like it or not! rap is here to stay for a very long time. Now as for Eminem and his genius! sorry I've always been a lousy speller. He is a genius in his genre! there is no one out there who can write like him in his GENRE! you probably don't even listen to him or his stuff, so how can you judge. I listen to everything, from rock to country to hip hop to Latin, to opera and classical. I own it all. I have a twenty three year old still living at home and when she first brought rap into the house I almost had a heart attack, I allowed it, but I had to plug up my ears. Then one evening Linda, that's my daughter's name as well asked me to just sit down and listen to him and!! the words he was projecting. So I did..hense, I have been a fan ever since. One cannot judge unless you have really listened hard to this stuff. A lot of it turns me off believe me it does, I'll even go as far as calling some of it trash, however some of it is good stuff. You just have to be open minded enough to really listen. Country! no never will have rap added to it, I hope! But one must also remember never to say never.

Toby Keith did a rap section in his song, "I Wanna Talk About Me."

Neal McCoy had a country rap song at least eight years ago.

Country has mixed, for better or worse, with practically every style of music there is--Blues, Jazz (ragtime to bebop), R&B, Rock, Pop, Latin, Big Band, Classical, Swing, Folk, Irish, Metal, you name it, Country's done it. Some of those styles have become part of what would be called, "traditional" country--Hank Williams' "Move It On Over" came out before Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock," listen to them, they are very similar.

The recent controversy in Nashville was not over whether the new stuff was "country" or not--it was that the older, established artists were being dropped from Country radio to make more room for the kids. This was something new for Nashville (When I moved here in 1979, it was difficult for an artist in their twenties to get a record deal, all the artists being signed were in their thirties.)

I don't think either Country or Rap/Hip Hop are "Anti" each other. They are simply alternatives, and not diametrically opposed.

I'd like to see a Charley Pride/Eminem duet.

All the Best,
Mike

Whee...Some Thread a-goin' on here!

Best I can Recollect, BOB DYLAN invented "Rap" just around the time he sorty invented "Country-Rock" too...Remember that Song that went "..Lookout Kid..it's Somethin' ya did.."? Yep. Bob Dylan, Incredibly, Rap's got a White Daddy!

However...White Folks CAN'T even REALLY Claim "Country" either...Ol' (Rather ASIAN) "Hawaiian Guitar" Sounds foreran the Pedal Steel "Twang" that made "Country" so Distinctive from all the "Other Genres," ages back.

I think YOUNGER White Kids (in-General) have always preferred Music That Pissed Off "Conservative" Parents, so Rap makes for a Perfect "Wedge" in the Generation Gap. Just like Elvis came along to "Whitey-fy" Rock, now we got EMIEM...(& Older Whites, like Myself, get a more Pallatable Message out of him than the Let's Face It, Often-More-Potty-Mouthed Currently Black Masters of This Genre.)

But I, Older White Guy that I am, Can & DO listen (Occasionally) to Rap. & Everything Else. There's NO (Primary U.S.) Genre that hasn't had Black AND White "Roots" as it developed...then Evolved into.."Something ELSE." It's ALL interesting to listen to, even if you're a Pissed-Off Parent.

Wanna "BLAME" somebody for "Racializing" Popular Music, Blame BILLBOARD: Back in late '70's-early '80's, they had the "BLACK CHARTS"...(later to be Renamed "R&B CHARTS".) Guess we finally had enough White Guys with Sufficient "Soul" to Break-Through, eh? ;-)>

Stay Tuned!

I'm pretty sure Bob Dylan was using a talking blues form that goes back to traditional blues. John Lee Hooker had his own groove for talking blues.

Wasn't there an old talking blues that mentioned going to a henhouse and thinking they heard heard a chicken sneeze but,

"... down on his knees
I saw a rooster saying his prayers.
Thankin' God for the hens upstairs."

anyone remember this? or am I stupid and it's a Bob Dylan song?

Mike

Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette and Hot Rod Lincon I am sure go back further than Dylan, and there was a lot of talking stuf about pre that so I am sure it can be traced back to the year dot.
Inkspots did a lot of melodic type talking too.
They didn't swear a lot in those days.
THat may be the differance.

So many opinions about music! And that's pretty much all they are - opinions, matters of personal taste.

That's all.

I've scanned through a number of these posting replies, and it seems to me that a point is being missed here.
Hip hop is valid music in many ways, but we are hearing a lot of the downside of life and endorsement of criminal behavior.
This is nothing like the work of the great Motown artists and the soul music that came out of Philadelphia and Memphis.
I was involved in the NYC music industry back in the '60s and even then, criminals, drug dealers were attempting to take control, which is something they've now obviously accomplished.
Because country music in Nashville has been more devoted to its religious roots and religion has played a big role in the life of country artists, the criminal element has not been able to take hold as firmly as it has in cities like NY, LA and Chicago.
Our black brothers also come from religious backgrounds, but because so many of them grew up in ghetto neighborhoods and in conflict with the local police, they have fallen prey more easily to the criminal life, and their music today echoes that involvement.
It's easy to criticize, more difficult to understand, and even more difficult to offer solutions. Read "The Ice Opinion" by Ice-T and you may begin to understand the situation.
As for what to do, I have personally made a fairly thorough study of hip hop and rap, and have created my own similar sounds with messages that encourage the listener to rise above the criminal mentality and live a life worthy of praise.
And ps: I totally love country music; the very first record I owned was a Gene Autry version of "Red River Valley" on red plastic.

The one thing you don't see because it's not meanstream is that there are in fact black people doing country music just like there are white people doing rap. There's even asian rap & country now and so on. You might not like rap for the fact that you may not understand it's piont of view or that it's just not what you're into and the same goes for country. Every style of music (including rap & country) has it's negative or positive values. I'm not really fan of either but I do respect both styles. After all both are tearing up the charts right now.

rap music, hip hop, etc;,like all music forms, begin at first to appeal to the ones closest to its origins. Then as it spreads away, it mixes with other forms of music and produces new blends. nothing is solid. Everything moves one way or another. You just haven't waited long enough.

WOW after reading this thread it highlights one thing: the lack of intolerance in this world.

Dare anyone suggest an opinion whilst elaborating that no offence or malice is intended and they get stereotyped.

Are we really all that small minded that we can't accept a genuine thought expressed by an individual? Seems so!
Anyone ever heard of clarification? Works wonders for me; saves a lot of stress.

Good point by the way ptondreau.

I want to jump in but don't know where to start!

It might be a bit dark at the moment in the US, but I believe rap to be one of the truly brilliant American artforms. Let's put aside the "bling" and the "pimp" content for the moment (in fact, if I could put it aside for good, I would). This is a form that combines jazz-like improvisation with theatre and references to any other music you want. It's a clean slate. Consider it as verbal tap-dancing. Plus it has the grittiness that comes from direct contact with the streets.

However, I recently put together a compilation of African rap. All I can say is: stand back. Their various scenes have grown far from the commercial and media pressures that exist in Europe and the US. And it is the most vibrant music on the planet (did I really say that? Looking back, I did).

These guys really have something to say, and a unique musical sensibility. I consider it a privilege to have worked with guys that give so much at each show.

The US rap I hear I now find to be bloated and irrelevant. There's too much of it and many of the performers are winging it madly.

Time will filter all that fluff out. Meanwhile, change channels. I do when country comes on!
