I'm of the opinion, that just about any lyric can be sung to the theme song from the TV series "Mash" agree? disagree¿ ------------------ http://www.random-noise.com/

I believe the theme song to M*A*S*H* is titled, "Suicide is Painless". I have never tried that one, but I find that most lyrics can be sung to the tune of the theme from "Gilligan's Island".

Wow, ahmad jamal wrote Gilligan's Island? Last person I would have thought... Many years ago, I was working with a retired and very experienced arranger/composer who mostly worked in the 50s and 60s... anyway, he loved to tell stories of what went on in the studios and tv back then, and he was telling me he had written this little song for some tv show, and then went to england and europe for a couple of months... He said when he came back, he found a large check in his mailbox as royalties for that tune... I asked what tune it was he had written... It turned out it was "I am the merry mailman" that was sung by "Capt. Jack McCarthy" a kid's show that I used to watch when I was a kid... I think this was a New York show, so other parts of the country may not have gotten it... It was one of those "I don't believe it" moments... ------------------ www.mp3.com/paulradelat

Did Ahmad Jammaal sing it in the original movie? That was a funny part, unforyunately overshadowed by the shower scene and the football game.

Gilligan's Island Theme??????
The melody has ancient orgins in Celtic Music. The words are apparently written by Producer Sherwood Schwartz for the 1964 pilot episode.
By the way, the debate is over...Mary Ann wins over Ginger.
In regards to the Theme from MASH, apparently studio ace Carol Kaye played bass on that song.
Once I played the MASH theme really fast in B minor and it sounded alot like "White Wedding" by Billy Idol.
Go figure...

I think Johnny Mandell wrote "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" that Burl Ives sings in Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer seasonal special on TV.
It's a great song...I know all the words by heart. Isn't that the dream of every songwriter out there anyway.
What was the original topic again????????

Ahmad wrote the music for the Theme from Mash. Not the lyrics as far as I am aware, nor does he sing that I am aware of.

Hi Brian, why is it that the lead sheet for the theme for MASH credits Johnny Mandel for the music? I've been doing club dates for years and basically, I know 3 Johnny Mandel tunes, "the shadow of your smile", "emily", "the theme from MASH (Suicide is Painless)" ------------------ www.mp3.com/paulradelat

hi paul, this link confirms your assessment that Johnny M,andel wrote the music for suicide is painless, my best guess is that the theme for the movie and the tv show are different, well more research is on the way. http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php?hid=2UWoX0%2Bha5M%3D ------------------ http://www.random-noise.com/

Paul,
You're absolutely correct. Johnny Mandel wrote it. Ahmad Jamal just performed it on the movie/TV show. That's what I get for listening to 102K songs last year and reading 8K artist/writer bios! = )

the confusion stems from the fact that it is ahmad jamal's instrumental version that is played on the tv show, and on a lot of the soundtrack albums, because producers thought the worded version "suicide is painless" was too depressing for public consumption. here's a link for a soundtrack that has both versions. http://www.bestcareanywhere.net/multimedia.htm ------------------ http://www.random-noise.com/

Hi Brian, at first I was just thinking, wow, ahmad jamal wrote gilligan's island, cause i've had this happen to me with other tunes that the last person I would have thought of wrote it.. But I'm a big Johnny Mandel fan, and I said, hold on a minute here, have I been under the impression that this is a Mandel tune and it isn't? But the lead sheet definitely told me "no, you're not deluding yourself... ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) ------------------ www.mp3.com/paulradelat

you know - i just listened to that song again and it really just kicks ass. the lyrics are kind of simplistic -- but in a good way -- sort of like a haiku about ending your life. it's amazing that something that dark could wiggle its way into the popular consciousness because of a movie/tv show. i think i'll go rent the film right now. ------------------ kit malone http://www.kitmalone.com [This message has been edited by kit (edited 08-06-2003).]
