Thought we would contine to go backwards while I figure out what the heck I'm doing with the new song.

This is one of the first I ever wrote and an old analog 4 track recording, done here..the drum is a clay pot.

How much you want for that clay pot ?
Man this is good for a 1st song. I came from a town where babies raised babies too. Great idea.

Sub,
Clay pot is cool on analog. I really like that break for that acoustic chord in front of the hook line. Yeah keep posting the old stuff...tis new stuff for me.

Howdy Sub!

This has a very neat vibe to it. How old were you when you wrote it?

I especially like that old eerie Metheney- like (Lyle Mays) organ sound, and the climbing progressions.

I heard little bits of Pat Metheny and a hair of Genesis in there somewhere.

Just remember, as it falls in Wichita,

so it falls in Witchita Falls.

Blessings,

Johnboy

I really like the acoustic guitar tone....
The bass seems a bit muddy and could use better definition...perhaps a drastic mid boost...
The synth pads are cool and just right level wise.
The clay pot is very cool...
I hear an egg shaker and sticks too..
great percussion arrangement...
vox seems compresseed heavily but sounds real good to my ears.
harmony vox is spot on...I like the added third ah ah ahs...very cool...
The song itself has a great musical groove.
lyrically this is very good...I liked it a lot man.

I dig the warmth of the tape for sure.
be cool man,
Joe

Four Track . . . . . Sounds like much more. I love this progression, very sophistocated. All this recording talent and you can play that well too!
Did you add all that extra sound with just keyboards? Real pretty.
This might be my favorite so far Sub.

Hi Louis,

That clay pot is broke....
Thanks for the offer though [Linked Image]

Terri- No soundclick yet, Dont know if i'l put it there
I'm getting bored with soundclick already ...

Tom- Thanks man, yes I love that chord too
wish I could remember what it was.. That's one of the things I often regret, never learning to read or write music or study theory & chord voicings
I have to record everything or it's gone!

Johnboy- love Metheny seen him too.
Didn't get any vibe of that on this but that's cool!!!
I think I was about 25 when I wrote it..
My oldest and dearest friend is the one singing it.
I'm a big Genesis fan seen them 3 times to.. Amazing Live! We had a song called Wichita Ma [Linked Image]
Thanks..

Thanks Michael, -Yes we got good at bouncing track together percussion & bass to 1 track Keyboards to 1 track, all vocals 1 track & guitar, 1 track

Joro- thanks much There are shakers and a dembec not sure how you spell it)
There is no bass guitar just low end keyboards we bounced together, cant remix [Linked Image] but yes a tad more mids would be nice.. as long as that round low end is there though against everything else.
Percussion is live.. Vocal actually have no compression added to them didn't even own a compressor then. The analog tape squished it..
Yes I liked the simple lyric story it is rare that I even try to tell one..

Thanks Bro..

Tom- Thanks! I wrote it on acoustic but faster rock y version. my friend felt it slower and he sang this version. Once I heard the new feel I added low keyboards and some ather higher whining swirling sounds flute like and whatever.. We added percussion 1st had to be there.. We bounced tracks together..
I like the old stuff and miss my friend!

Want my tape machne back!!!

thanks

So, what - you've always been this good? Post something of poor, or at least mediocre, quality so we know there is hope for the rest of us :-). I love the ethereal quality of this tune and the lyrics tell a good story.

I know what you mean about never learning music theory [Linked Image] - I feel the same way. My song "Gypsy Woman" from 1975 was in a non-standard tuning and I just had no way to write down what I was playing. If not for the recording it would be lost forever, because I have no idea how to play it today.

Looking forward to hearing more of your earlier work when you get around to posting it.

Hey Sub,

You are the reason I gave up my naughty “stocking” habits tisk tisk.

"NO GOOD IN GOODBYE" was absolutely a phenomenal experience for me, thank you.

It was the song that cast the light on me lurking in the shadows.

I loved the line “I could tell by the look in your eyes you were already gone”, Killer!!! Just blew me away!

And also the play on words “No Good In Goodbye”

But, this is the song “A Mans Desire” that paralleled my life in that I was around 25 like you, when I started taking the art of songwriting to the level of multi-track recording.

When you mentioned that you used a clay pot for the drums, that line immediately transported me back to the days of the Troglodytes, before the dawn of the mighty Drum machines, we used a collection of albums called Drum Drops that had various drum sessions apparently by the Drummer that did the Hawaii 50 theme song. We would manually tape segments (press down on the record button on the count of 4) and piece them together until we had the whole drum part the way we liked it.

So this is the song that literally dragged me into the light!

Thanks Sub

Hi Accel- I didn't even see this reply.. till now
Thanks so much for these awesome knd words.

"No Good In Goodbye" meant something to me to
We worked so hard on it.. I tortured myself with the lyric to be universal & good..

It's like this.
Am I talking about a loved one passing?
My sweetheart leaving? Divorce?
The devastating effects of a Hurricane?

"When your World is destroyed cant go on whats the point"

Walk up to someone in New Orleans who just lost everything and everyone in there life and say Things will get better with time.. have hope, It ill be alright!
Ya gotta move on with your life, be strong move forward!

This was hard for me to accomplish..

Recording- I cant read or write music and have had about a dozen lessons in my life.. No theory-self taught.. I had to teach myself recording or lose my songs for ever [Linked Image]

Greg- Thanks much! I'll go check out your site..

Hey Sub,

I couldn’t get the words of the chorus in “All Over You” out of my head today.

I found myself involuntarily singing the Chorus “love you baby” ALL DAY!!!!
and then I’d hear a faint “love you baby” in two-part harmony answering back.

Very, Very, Very catchy!

I can’t get it out of my head.

Hi Accel,

It's funny you refer to the songs from the other threads. I'm like there's no "Love You Baby in "Mans Desire" [Linked Image]

Yeah I thought up that background vocal at the last minute.. Sang it like with the Kinks or Stones in mind. Yes the song is kinda catchy for such a whacky tune.. I'm surprised because I didn't feel it was when It started out..

Thanks so much..

All my recording ends up on tape. I do most of my tracking on my computer set up, but everyting eventually ends up on 2-inch tape for mixing. Gives it warmth and opens it up.
