Dixie After Dark
©2005 Corey Parkman

It’s been a quiet day around town
The only stir was when school let out
And the sidestreet bars have stayed still as a tomb
Even the grocery store’s been slow
But soon that five o’clock whistle blows
That's when the sun changes shifts with the man in the moon

Welcome to Dixie,
Dixie after dark
The kids are circlin’ the square
Hangin’ out of cars
Granddad’s rockin’ on the porch
Puffin’ a big cigar
The good ol’ boys are makin’ noise
At honky tonks and bars
While lovers look for a quiet place to park
Down here in Dixie,
Dixie after dark

There’s a bluegrass band at the Baptist church
Barbecue’s so full it’s about to burst
And there’s a big bonfire burnin’ down by the lake
The high school kids are hookin’ up
Cowboys are stylin’ in shined up trucks
Mom and dad hit the Sonic for fries and a shake

Welcome to Dixie,
Dixie after dark
The kids are circlin’ the square
Hangin’ out of cars
Granddad’s rockin’ on the porch
Puffin’ a big cigar
The good ol’ boys are makin’ noise
At honky tonks and bars
While lovers look for a quiet place to park
Down here in Dixie,
Dixie after dark

Bridge
I’m singin’ Hank in this honky tonk band
Soon as we’re through, I’ve got plans
‘Cause pretty Lindsey’s been givin’ me the eye...

Welcome to Dixie,
Dixie after dark
The kids are breakin’ curfew
Hangin’ out of cars
Granny calls granddad to bed
He stomps out his cigar
The good ol’ boys will be makin’ noise
Till they close down the bar
While lovers enjoy a quiet place to park
Down here in Dixie,
Dixie after dark

Welcome to Dixie, Dixie after dark

Hi Corey

nice, but i might start the last line of verse one with "that's when" after all it is a country song. Also the bridge doesn't exactly add anything new, and with you being the "king" of bridges, i know you can do better.

Thanks Ritt... first suggestion - done. I'll have to work on the second... not sure what else to say in the bridge, so I was just trying to add another dimension.

Howdy Corey...

Every night when I go home, I have to drive around the Public Square in downtown Centerville on my way home. It never ceases to amaze me all the kids just hanging around there...same ones every night it seems. Same cars, same kids...just sitting, maybe hoping for some action. Only thing that is different is that Centerville is part of the Bible Belt and there aren't any saloons there (that I know of)...though two weeks ago they re-opened the newly renovated RUBEES which is not far from where I live. Not surprisingly...it has been PACKED every night since. I keep thinking I outta stop in and just see what it is like in there (scouting and research you know!). Just curious if they have music in there.

BTW...I really enjoyed this. It is definitely a slice of southern life.

Hugs,
Bobbie

Yep. It sure did. It made me smile, too. I spent my formative years in Dubach-that's about 20 miles North of Ruston. Lord, have mercy. That seems like eons ago. [Linked Image] We didn't even have a fancy square like Centerville. Ha!

Hi Corey,

Nice job capturing the feel of the Southern small town thing. We recently bought a lakehouse at Reelfoot Lake in Northwest TN. It's near a little town called Tiptonville that doesn't have a square, but it is interesting to watch the kids hang out there. They all congregate in the parking lot of the local hardware store. Of course Tiptonville recently got a Sonic Drive-in, so all that may change now. You know bein' a big city and all.

Enjoyed the read,
Larry

Hello Corey,

Well it didn't take long to write out another great tune did it. Being a Texan and familiar with all these things this song hit right home with me and the visuals were great to say the least. Reminds me of when I was younger and used to go to the bluegrass festivles in Kerville. What a great time those days were. A fine job of taking us there and letting us enjoy the fun these folks are having. Great job IMHO!

Thanks Stan. Y'know... I haven't had a 'Hav-a-Tampa' in quite a while lol.... they used to be a part of my Friday night routine in younger days. Anyhow, thanks for stoppin' by Grenada, MS... my hometown, which inspired this.

Good write Corey. Although I don't think it's a radio hit, I think it would be great in a film or TV show about something in a small southern town. Keep that in mind when you do the music and pitch this.

Thanks Tricia, Larry, David and summeoyo. Normally, I would tend to agree with you about this being more of a 'movie song', summeoyo, but after the success of Buddy Jewell's "Sweet Southern Comfort" last year, ya never know!
