Under the weather here, but read this in the spirit of a good Christmas song. Frankly, I believe you've blown your entire hypothesis outta the water with these two lines.

You're implying that he, too, is a Christian, but then you talk about "their myth". I have no doubt you'll somehow obfuscate. As you often do in lyrics of this ilk, you try to land on both sides of the fence, and I don't see that happening. And PLEASE don't take this as a condemnation of the one "who lives a lie", but I deem it just as worthy that one doesn't always have the homosexual as the whipped, downtrodden scape-goat. Truth be told, based on what little (and I do mean LITTLE) TV (sports and a few reality) I see, I'd swear that same sex relationships are as common as ....anything! "Great Race" ALWAYS has at least one COUPLE, and usually two (albeit, one with a son and his mom), so I don't think this kinda hysteria is anywhere near what it once was. JMO.

Sorry it's taken over a week to Thank Ya for Your Critique, but I don't learn Computers Overnite...& my son's JUST tonight taken Pity on My Plight..& hooked up a wi-fi thingamabob on Mom's Computer so I can do alla my WebTv Email...and even ACCESS JPF on the Foool Thang! (This Lyric was Posted thanks to Brian..I'd emailled it tophim since it was the Only Christmas Song I'd come up with this year..& Christmas was fast-departin'!)

But now I guess "I'm BAACKKK!" heh-heh!

The "Myth" referred-to is the Parents' Assumption that their Son is "Straight"...that, and their Too-Narrow a-View of "What Good Christians Do"...

I don't picture the Gay Guy as "Pitiable" here, either. It's truly The PARENTS who are to be pitied. He returns to his Life as it Really Is..(At an Increasing DISTANCE)..THEY continue to keep their Blinders On..forcing this Distance to Increase.

& Yeah, their Son IS a pretty Good Christian...AND Organist as well..in Real Life... No Obfuscation Necessary--that's just how it is!

In My Family, Generation Past, it was My Favorite Uncle...who went "Both Ways"...fathering two really GORGEOUS Blonde Kissable Cousins of mine..raised 'em well, too, before his Marriage soured...temporarily..as he dealt with his Attracted-to-Men Side.

WAS about to reconcile with his wife when he was struck & killed by a car about a decade & a half ago. Over his lifetime, he was Head of YMCAs in Several Major Cities...so I guess he'd pass "The Christian Test" adequately-enough.

Since there's no guarantees for tomorrow, thought i should make a quick comment about the "myth" line. Well, just glimpsed above and see you did too lady L (whoever that is). To me, there has to be an acceptance on the part of the mythbelievers, despite at least a hint of something avering the contrary. You've given no reason for them to think he's anything other than what they've always believed/assumed. I went home for Christmas. My mother hasn't seen me with a woman in 15 years or better. Everything was wonderful as usual. I came home alone. So...I'm not a myth. But, if I'd decided to switch teams at some point, and had a guy waiting here, she'd have kissed a "myth" goodbye? Sounds more than slightly askew.
That's what I'm talking about. I don't think there'll ever come a day when 100% (or even close)of the people are comfortable with this issue. Give you a quick case in point.
I never HEARD of guys digging guys like that until the summer between my soph/jun year in high school. The following February, we were in the regional basketball tourney, and (I forget the details, been awhile, I was fifteen)my best bud and I got word the coach at the school we were playing was homosexual. We put our uniforms on at Reggie's house (under our clothes). The game wound up going 2 overtimes (we lost), neither of us ever got to sit down, so we couldn't have been more sweat-soaked. Well, we put our clothes directly over our unis again and plowed out into the 15 degree night air to his dad's car. Bottom line, though I've not thought about it in forever, my feeling in that regard hasn't much changed. I would STILL be upset if I knew a guy was checking me out in the shower. It distorts things so much. Ask me if I'd LOVE to have been able to watch the girls shower! I KNOW you woulda!! Now, supposedly due to luck (or unluck) of the draw, a male who desires males, gets all the free pops he wants. Yep, it distorts things is what it does....

You know I love you, Stan, always have. I love your sense of humor, your wit, your cleverness, and all those great tongue-in-cheek lyrics you've written. BUT, I absolutely love it when you show your serious side. And you do it so well. It definitely keeps us all on our toes.

As you may or may not know, my sister is gay. She came out about 6 years ago to my parents. I've known it for decades, though it was always unspoken.

For a minute, my parents FLIPPED out. The good, God-fearing Catholics they are. But when it all simmered to a boil, I merely said to my father, "Do you love Shelly?" Of course he said yes. And I replied, "Then you love her NO MATTER WHAT. A parent can't possibly shut that off. Now, stop with the Archie Bunker mentality and GET OVER IT!"

As simple as that sounds, that's really truly all it took. They have accepted her ever since, and her galfriend, Jaci. My folks treat Jaci just like they treat my husband and my brother's wife, like family.

I'm sorry for the sadness this gentleman had to endure. The ones who really missed out were his folks.

I love this, Stan. And you for writing it.

I think ALL of us are a Bit "Mythical"..especially as Our Parents View Us. Most Mainly See Us "At Our (Hopeful) Best"...& most of us are REALLY a Lot More "Human" than we'll Openly Admit to 'Em.

As for "Gay Experiences" (And the "Fearsome Effect" it just MIGHT have On Ya) I think you've WAY overreacted in your Annecdote about The Coach. But you seem to Better Understand it now..to a point.
Nothing I know will "MAKE you Gay"...it's truly Innate rather than Learned Behaviour. It doesn't "Rub Off". How do I know? Simple: My best buddy & I were mildly-molested by a Gay Guy when we were age 7. My Buddy's married & fathered 3 kids, adopted 3 more. I've married & fathered 2 sons. Neither of us has EVER lusted for a Guy in bed...& it's been over 50-some-years.

As for the Shower Scene: So What? By now, you've been to a few
Titty Bars & done the Same "Voyeur" Bit..albeit with Chicks..& What HARM was ever Done? Back when I travelled with my Army Uniform On I got "Hit On" rather frequently, but no gay-bashin' was ever necessary...I just replied "I'm flattered you're interested, but I'm heterosexual as all-get-out."

I, personally, don't think the nude male body's ALL That Beautiful, but Michealangelo did..& did justice to it with "David"..which I admitedly admire as a Work of Art. (I'd much rather admire a Female Form..& often do.) As for folks being "Comfortable" with Male Nudity, might as well be...we're about 50% of What's Out There.

"Comfort Levels" on Gay Folks certainly Vary..but they're about 5-10% of What's Out There, too. & they're certainly not ALL that Different from You or I. Science has yet to come up with a "Gay Gene"...I tend to think it's perhaps they were the Opposite Sex in a Previous Lifetime...since I tend to believe in Reincarnation. (& maybe THAT's why Christianity feels So Threatened by gays?) I dunno.

I'll close by sayin' I HAVE watched gals in the Shower...back in College Days. Took a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course (Co-ed)...& the ancient College Pool had Locker Rooms built back-to-back for Guys vs Gals. Lotta holes drilled in wall underneath the lockers/Great View of gals exitin' the shower facilities. Big Cheer allus went up when the Little Redhead Gal exited in the Mist...DAYUM was she ever RED evawhere it counted. I'm sure the gals eventually caught on, but they never failed to take a Great Shower the whole Semester..& we Future Lifeguards sure enjoyed taking that course!

No Lives were altered..or lost. Not EVERY Guy raced to the holes in the wall, either..tho admittedly, we-uns DID make fun of 'em a bit.

You really know how to shoot straight (no pun intended...really!) when comes to the serious side of touchy issues. Like your song a lot. I could tell you a great story about a good freind of mine and Helen's who lives in the Tulsa, OK area. He is well-known at a major Hollywood studio for his computer graphics in some well-known movies. He is legally married and his wife is a very popular novelist. He is exclusively gay and she goes both ways. Their marriage is a cover-up for professional reasons, plus tax reasons...but mostly professional. In more than 15 years of marriage, they have never been mutually intimate. He probably would not care if the whole world knew. But, her readership is extensive, having sold over ten million books. Because they fear what it could do to her writing career, they keep it secret from all but their closest friends. She writes under a Pen Name. But, I would not be comfortable putting her real name out in the event someone knew.

Have to go along with TINK about your tag...it is incredibly powerful! But, just in general, it usually is a very smart thing to go along with the lovely and talented TINK...don'tcha think? After having read through it 3 times, don't really find anything to nit. Good job! Happy New Year, my friend.

PS: Just a secondary thought...after 23 years in the Army, my body has probably been seen nude by more men than women! For those of you who have not been in the military, the showers do not have stalls...they're community showers...8 - 12 shower heads in a huge open area. At least that's how it was when I was in. I retired in 1988, do could be different now.

I think a LOT of the Arts-ier Folk have tortured Sex Lives. But Angst worked so WELL for Edward Munch...and Oedipus would be Just Another Greek Play without MOM makin' Her Appearance... Doubt if any Two People really COULD agree on "What's NORMAL" these
days. Your Friends seem to have really worked it all out pretty dern well--GREAT Tax Situation...No Questions Asked Vacations...Shared Housekeepin' Duties...(Who could ask More from a Marriage, eh?)

I became good friends with Set Director Jim Duffy during the "COCOON" Movie Shoot in St. Pete. Jim & his Partner, Ted Lake, were openly gay/definitely A Couple/Very Successful in L.A. (Ted did sets for "Fantasy Island", etc, etc, etc. Their Bathroom Wall was covered in License Tags from all the Productions they'd worked sets on.) I went to L.A. to pitch songs several times & stayed at their really-spiffy mountainside Sherman Oaks home as their guest.

My second trip out, I took along a Country Gospel Singer Chum of mine who headed up our Local Songwriter's Club. DIDN'T know he was Homophobic until we reached Jim's Front Door...& I'd forgotten to mention Jim & Ted were gay. The chum barricaded himself in our bedroom...locked himself in the bathroom whenever he got dressed...& allus left in a BIG hurry each morning we left to pitch. Got to be (thank God) a Big Joke amongst my friends there..who were as-faithful to each other as any Hererosexual Couple I've ever met.

Hey, ya remember those Piss Tubes back in the Nam? Big Ol' Empty Artillery Casings stuck in the Sand, with a little bitty bit of corrugated tin roofin' wrapped around the Perimiter of the thing for "modesty"..& you'd be standin' there (Pretty-well Exposed) and the GALS would walk by? War's sure hell...I never minded the Guys, but we had Nurses and Vietnamese Gal Staffers to contend with in Base Camp! Nudity never did bother me...but Urinatin's STILL a Private Party, IMO. (Ah, the Hangups that follow us all thru our Adult Lives, eh?)

Time to Shaddup & Post & go watch some TV with La Femme!

Hi Stan,

After reading this lyric, I actually ended up feeling sorry for his parents! This guy is making a huge assumption that his parents will not love him anymore, or be heartbroken, if they know the truth. Here was my thought process about it....

Even though this guy feels that his parents are narrow-minded, obviously, the parents are such caring and loving people that this man cares deeply about keeping them in his life. If they were otherwise, then why would he care so much, or, at the very least, why would he care to keep going home for a visit? Many people simply move away and don't go home to "bad" parents.

So, because he keeps WANTING to go home, I'm assuming that they're pretty decent people.

Thus, killing the love of a loving parent is almost impossible to do. If he hasn't even given them the chance to respond, how in the world does he know how they're going to react? They certainly might have expressed strong feelings about gay people, but...this is their son.

My nephew, for instance, just went to jail last month for credit card fraud related to his heroin addiction. On any given day in the past, I might have given the impression that I wouldn't be too happy with anyone I know committing credit card fraud. That being said...he is my nephew and I love him.

Also, his parents might be happier to know that their son loved them and trusted them enough to confide in them, than they are sad that their son is gay. It seems very presumptious and haughty of him to think that he has the power to ruin his parents' lives simply because he lives his life a certain way. In the end, they may care more about his honesty and openness with them more than they care about anything else. Who knows, really?

If someone is scared to tell his parents something, I completely understand that. However, to simply assume that your parents will react in a certain way, and to blame them for this....it just doesn't make me feel much sympathy for anyone except the parents. Also, I believe that whenever we hide the truth from someone, it is tempting to blame the person that we're hiding it from, instead of looking inwardly at some of the deeper reasons that we may be hiding the truth.

Just wanted to give you my spin on this, and how the song might strike some people.
