Today's Hot New Country!! [Linked Image]

I'm Free

Walk down any street
in this land of mine
coast to coast, you'll meet
ev'ry color, ev'ry kind
we've all got a dream
we may win, we may lose
but our birthright means
we can be who we choose

yeah, I'm free, to be anything
to go anywhere, like a bird on the wing
yeah, I'm free, to catch a fire
and follow its flame, to my heart's desire

I'm free, I'm free, I'm free
to be anything

knock on any door
in this nation, sir
trust me, rich or poor
young or old, they'll all prefer
to live in a land
where each walks his own way
and with them I'll stand
on freedom's road and say

I'm free, to be anything
to go anywhere, like a bird on the wing
I'm free, to catch a fire
and follow its flame, to my heart's desire

I'm free, I'm free, I'm free
to be anything

man's looked here and there, but liberty's rare
not all will taste it
but in this land my home, liberty's mine to own
and I won't waste it

yeah, I'm free, to be anything
to go anywhere, like a bird on the wing
yeah, I'm free, to catch a fire
and follow its flame, to my heart's desire

I'm free, I'm free, I'm free
to be anything

Today's hot new country indeed. This is as simple and pandering as it gets-- and I mean that in a good way. [Linked Image] Lemme fine-tooth comb it just to let you know how I envision it:

Walk down any street
in this land of mine

That should really be "land of ours", but I can see that leaves ya high and dry rhyme-wise.

coast to coast, you'll meet
ev'ry color, ev'ry kind
we've all got a dream
we COULD win OR we COULD lose
but our birthright means
we can be who we choose

yeah, I'm free, to be anything
to go anywhere, (like-- delete) a bird on the wing
yeah, I'm free, to catch (me-- delete) a fire
and follow its flame, to my heart's desire

I'm free, I'm free, I'm free
to be anything

I'd delete this part too, unless it sounds really good in your head.

knock on any door
in this nation, sir
trust me, rich or poor
young or old, they'll all prefer

"Nation, sir/all prefer"-- nice! It wouldn't be a couch lyric if it didn't have at least one great rhyme. Too bad the "prefer" lands at the end of line 4, since you should really be finishing a thought there.

to live in a land
where each walks his own way
and with them I'll stand
on freedom's road AND SAY

YEAH, I'm free, to be anything, etc.

man's looked here and there, but liberty's rare
not EVERYONE'LL taste it
but in this land my home, liberty's mine to own
and I AIN'T GONNA waste it

There ya have it. This is good as always. Hope I could help ya with it!

Anthony

Anthony, thanks for the reply. this took 10 minutes to write and 20 minutes deliberating on how to phrase a few lines. Mrs. Grouch ain't around so I was lost. most of you have I won't use but you DID help me with "catch ME a fire"(it didn't sound right without the "me" but it's gone now) and the last line of vs 2 was EXACTLY my alternate but i went with "stay". out of all the replies i've ever received only you and someone who replied to So Ends Our Night ever hit my 2nd string phrase. i may just change 'er... I tell ya-- given the choice between line 8 that's a continuation of line 7 and one that's not, I usually go with the continuation. I'm glad I could help on this one. Seems like a first! [Linked Image]

Anthony, I've led into a lot of choruses lately with that method and I was trying to avoid it. but as I always say...it just won't matter! BTW...didja notice that line 4 of vs 2 needs the next line and now line 8 of vs 2 needs the chorus? I'll bet no one will care. [Linked Image]

i really enjoyed this and was suprised. You have grea rhyming and a good concept. people keep on telling me that there are "rules" for writing and i figured you would know them. What that heck are the rules since people tell me to use them but not wha they are. Great stuff here.

Hi couch....

I am so impressed by your versatility. You write great down-to-earth, die-hard country....easy-to-understand, easy-to-relate-to commercial...and some beautiful other things that I can't categorize and don't always understand, except I know they're pretty. At any rate, I like leading into the chorus the way you did in Verse 2....I think that's always a strong way to do it. JMO, of course, for what that's worth.

Very nice....very commercial...good luck with this. [Linked Image]

Sunny n guitarist...thanks for the comments. [Linked Image] guitarist...I'm more of a "from the gut" writer, so I'm not too familiar with technical rules. my first rule is...don't be boring. as for structure, rhyming and concepts...those things just come to you after years of working at it. I recommend listening to mass quantities of songs by timeless artists. and if you're interested in modern songs, look over their lyrics on the Net and see how they're structured. that's the best advice I can offer.

and Sunny...I really appreciate your comment. [Linked Image]
