Hey Kaley, glad they are getting noticed. Really cool that someone is that interested to download heaps. It's gotta be someone who is super interesed in your work. Hope it's the Wiggles management, and you get signed real soon !
Kein, oh well it was fun while it lasted ! It's a cool song, really like it, I hope it's given it a boost in both the plays and the ranking, and folks got to hear it before it dissappears off into the ether.
cheers, niteshift

I wonder if everyone is advertising their sites to drive traffic there looking for them specifically. Sometimes I see bands or solos and they don't even mention their website. A friend has a site and a store (other than music products) and I can't seem to convince her to advertise the site in the store and the store on the site. You don't care where they buy from you; so long as they buy! Never miss a chance to market. Every time you post on a site like this list your website so folks can easily click. That invaluable word of mouth works when someone likes what they get from you and tells a friend where they can get it too.
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

To mention from the first post, soundclick changed from the member choosing their own player to soundclicks player. I noticed many less downloads of my songs after soundclicks change to their own player, even though on sites where you can use your own player my downloads have increased. And I am a free member on the sites I am on. Though I have settled on one site I am considering. I'm afraid of hackers and identity theft, not the paying for membership. SoundClick hides stats to free members. And many people don't like dealing with their player. I hav'nt had much of a problem with their player. But we all have our own computer setup.

We freebies can see our song stats Matt. Not who is actually doing the listening and downloading, but the actual plays and downloads. That is enough for me, combined with the fact, the ones that matter usaully contact me about any they like. Or dislike. Re the player there. I like it as it is, as, now with the play most recent uploads option avaialble, the soundclick player allows me to have that streaming, and any I like, I can click the member, go to their page, and down;oad the song without stopping the player, and to get back to the new uploads list I just have to click back and I am there. SongRamp used to have this facility, and it was great when i was doing radio and looking for new material. We used to use our own default plaer to play them then and it worked fine, but when they made their own player and killed the play all, they lost me, and a whole lot of others I am sure. Now Soundclick has added tha feature, I am really enjoying the feature, and use it daily. Graham

Thanks for enlightining me with that Graham. Maybe that is a coincidence with my diminished stats at soundclick. Because I did'nt find that anywhere else.
But I look at who responds more too. Not the stats.
I have found some good people at soundclick, and that is what is most important. I hav'nt tried there yet to find members without stopping the player, because my computer just chuggs along or the windows freeze up. I'm on dial-up. But I hav'nt had a problem streaming and downloading on soundclicks player.

OK, IAC has updated the stats again -- I am not sure what the cut-off date for these numbers are, but here goes:
1.) IAC (joined Nov 1st) There's A Drought Going On Raw Plays: 155 Unique Plays: 148 This Band Oughta Disband Raw Plays: 126 Unique Plays: 121
1.) Soundclick: ALL of 2007! There's A Drought Going On: Plays: 140 This Band Oughta Disband" Plays: 77
The bottom line seems to be that you will get your stuff heard a lot more at IAC (if the stats are accurate). All I did was to say hello in the "pipeline" message board and then send request to 3 or 4 country stations to listen/add my songs to their station. This Band Oughta Disband made it onto the KIAC Hitline list on the IAC's page 1 -- but There's a Drought Going On still got more plays.
When I do my 2008 RPM Challenge CD is February, I may have to look at joining IAC Prime so I can post more than 2 songs (it seems pretty cheap). At that time, I will also decide if I want to try and sell some stuff -- if the tunes are good enough (but ya know, there's no accounting for tastes, LOL!).
I hope this helps.
Kevin

Too funny. I checked the stats on soundclick while winding down from the pub sing last night and dasnged if the Her Current man song didn't have so many listens, the play graph had sent the page out of shape. It actually only had 12 plays but for some reason, the page had distorted. Probably something to do with the upgrade stuff soundclick is doing right now. Graham

Graham,
Since the update, the total play count at the top of the soundclick page has not even been close the total count when you look at the song by song stats (at the bottom of the page).

I notice that soundclick shows total song plays. Although what "total plays" is sometimes does'nt always add up to a complete listen of a recording. I look more at if someone can listen to a song of mine all the way through with that, as well as downloads. But I can recall in 2004 when SoundClick was the only game in town for me. I'm not one for being too agressive in the threads or taking advantage of all the promo opportunities. So I go to many sites with the best choice of streams I can for the listener. And also flexibility in the site. Not how many members there is.
How one sticks thierselves out there seems to have the most to do with it.
But I think that what you are reading in the stats to the bottom of the page counts differently. Because one gives complete streams, the other may not. I read from an administrator at Soundclick to where if a song is listened to for a minute that that counts as a play. Though of course, that does'nt have to mean a complete stream.

I don't think it ever tallied kevin. The total plays and Whatever the call the other one. It is only a rough guide, and we can all deduce what we will out of it, depending on our personal logic toward the thing. Graham

I like the new soundclick layout, clean, easy to navigate, with the songs listed on the front page. Much better presentation wise.

Yep. Me too Shifty. I was so peed off when songRamp killed the play all new feature. I fought with them for twelve months over the issue, and finally decided they had a reasojn for killing it, they weren't telling anybody about and resigned as a Moderator thare after five years of happily doing it. They were the only site I knew on the net the facility was available, and I thought it was great when looking for new stuff for my radio show. When I suggested it be applied at soundclick, I had an email back that day saying they thought it made sense, and would apply it. Took them a fortnight or so. Sites are only as good as their abilkity to supply what their users want I guess. If I anted a social club, I would join an on line dating service i guess. Graham

Ok, since it's almost the end of Nov, here's the stats from the 2 sites I use. Same ten songs, no advertising or links on both...
Soundclick
Page hits ; 390 Song Plays ; 45 Downloads ; zero
IAC
Raw Plays ; 1847 Unique Plays ; 1795 Downloads ; zero
Both have had no front page songs put up over the month, and both pages, are I guess, in the backwaters.
I think it comes down to the genre which is dominant to both sites, the music in this case, being more suitable to one particular audience than the other.
Also there's a matter of how many songs they are competing with. With over 2 million songs listed at soundclick, I think it's easy to get lost in the noise. From what I can figure, IAC seems to have about 80,000.
Anyone got any other comparisons ?

Latest and last stats for this comparison.....month of January
Soundclick
Page hits ; 479 Song Plays ; 16 Downloads ; zero
IAC
Unique Plays ; 8573 Downloads ; zero
I think it's time not to bother with soudclick, unless for file transfer. What is disturbing, is that out of the number of plays, not one person will spend a dollar. I think it may be time to concentrate energy into getting radio airplay, than trying to sell music.
Time to move on and give ourstage.com a try

Having a recording up for on air broadcasts would be the only realistic reason I would see in selling music online. Publishing those works and joining an organization like ASCAP would be essential then. I was considering joining ASCAP for when I get the adequate recordings somewhere down the line. Anyone here heard of last.fm?

Nite;
I haven't visited IAC in a while, so I thought I'd go and see what was happening.
I only have two songs at IAC, so I'll compare those.
There's a Drought Going On Soundclick (Jan): 24 plays IAC (Jan) : 1091 plays
This Band Oughta Disband: Soundclick (Jan): 2 plays IAC (Jan): 1041 plays
I don't get it -- and I don't know if I necessarily believe it either. These play number have to be because of the "radio" stations that play them, but I find it hard to believe that folks have really listened that much to those tunes.

Hey Kevin,
Yeah, it is kind of a difference, but I think it comes down to the fact ( in my case anyway ) that the stations there happen to pick up the material in the genre they like, and then embed a station player, say in a myspace page or wherevever, so your song could be spread all over the internet, not just at the site itself. Also, I think the traffic volume compared to the number of songs available is in a much higher ratio than sounclick which has millions of songs, and it is easy to get lost in the noise. Congrats on getting picked on the Hitline !, very cool to have your song up there for a week or so, which has added to more plays/listens.
Hey Kevin, maybe the listeners at that site just happen to like your music ! Watch out mate, you may just become (shudder ) popular !
Matt, you should join ASCAP anyway, it's always good to belong to the professional body of your industry. I'll check out last.fm

Geoff, I checked my soundclick and I had about 1000 hits last month with 350 plays and 10 downloads...the thing is Dale, my main co-writer for country has our stuff up on her soundclick site too, (and alot of times we use her link to post www.soundclick.com/rebeccadale ) and the one song that got hot "She Can See What She's Missin'" took off and for about 2-3 weeks was getting 70-80 plays a day, and this was a week or two after I had posted it at JPF, so it was one of those scenarios where the song was taking on a life of it's own for a bit...we are pitching that song now as well...time will tell, but I thought that was a neat thing, we weren't really promoting it , but it was getting alot of play, it was in country general and stayed in the top 5 or 10 for about a month, and in country overall main genre it reached #2 or 3 out of 35,000 songs, so I'm thinking it being up on that board is what was getting it the play, and I won't tell you what I thought about 8 of the 10 top ten songs at the time, but I will tell you I listened to my competition and I'm up for the challenge...cheers...Moker

In January I had 1,142 views and 553 plays, but I believe this was mostly due to viewers of Just Plain Folks and other song posting forums. The Johnny Cash song attracted more hits and listens because it charted okay, but I highly doubt there are secret fans out there. I still use Soundclick simply as a storage area for worktapes. Sort of cracks me up that old 4 track recordings full of tape hiss and fumbles can actually "chart".

Yep, that's it Moker, what ever works for you in your genre and music syle. I think differnet sites are naturally geared to differnt artists and diferent listeners, and it's about placing music in a particular niche where it's appreciated.
The whole idea about this thread is not to crticise, but to find somewhere where your particular style of music is lisened to, and appeciated.
Soundclick works for you, gets listeners, and gets exposure, so go where the listeners are. Hey, it's all about getting your music out there, and you're doing that, so keep doing it.
cheers, nitesift

Hey Mark,
Glad you're geting those plays, even if they're from shitty old work tapes. There's only one thing worse than being crticised....and that's being ignored. Keep em coming.

Lyle, I'm with ya , soundclick is a free place where I can put my demos and a few worktapes to keep up with them, send a publisher or an artist a link to listen , when submitting off of pitches now we often just e-mail a link, we control the download status , so say we're working something together, we can give the co-writer, a publisher, an artist, a songplugger all a listen off one link without having to actually e-mail the file. Geoff, last time I checked this thread a few months back I had a 2000 hit month, and I don't check it all that often but it is of interest when I do...see you guys, write great, be well...Moker

Overall, soundclick seems to be perfect for what I use it for. In January, I had over 1,200 "Plays" on all of the songs in January, but only a handful on the couple that I also have at IAC.
For me, the songs at soundclick do not really have a "life" of their own. They get plays when I first post them as JPF and FDP users listen, but after a couple of weeks, they will drop off the face of the earth. Now there are a couple of oldies that get a couple plays a day, probably from user "stations". For some reason, I think IAC's radio station concept seems stronger.

JPF is the only forum where I post. So anyone finding my Soundclick page is either going to do it from here or by random clicking. And random clicking doesn't result in many hits...
That said, I average about 200 plays per month on Soundclick. Basically it's a decaying exponential over the period of a few days after posting a song. On IAC I put one song up at the end of November. Didn't mention or promote it anywhere. It got about 600 plays in December and about 1100 in January. Doesn't seem to be letting up either. Interesting.....
I'll probably use Soundclick as I have been - post there to get feedback here. Will probably put finished products up on IAC. By the way, Nite, thanks for clueing us in on that site.

On sound click where do you find the stats?..can't find em Hey Ted: Go to your Band Administration Main Menu page. (That's the first page you go to to upload a song). At the very bottom of the page is a link for page and song statistics. Scott

'....Clicks or cliques? ......
You've hit the nail precisely on the head Sam, that's exactly what it's about, placing your music where the listeners are, and that is different for every artist and every song produced. Use the resources that are available, because one resoure does not necessarily translate to another user. Keep the toolkit full fellas ......

Hey, long live Soundclick. (or clique) It's the only one I know of with free unlimited space. I find that to be pretty incredible...a very sweet deal. Saved me from having to build and pay for a webpage...a page that I have no interest in maintaining.
I put "Butterfly" on IAC and it got put on a station or three and I get hundreds of plays a month...but not one message, ever. In the second available free spot I put "I Wrote This Song for Cash" and it doesn't get many plays at all. Of anything I've written, that's the song that complete strangers seem to go apeshit over...but not there. So I think IAC plays have a lot to do with being automated on these stations. I'm not sure how valuable that really is...to me, no response equals no big deal.
Next stop: OurStage. I think that's a pretty cool site, too. I'm a big fan of Free.

Hiya Niteshift, I checked out your music download site the other day after you responded to the post in about music licensing....I can't remember which service it was but I tried playing the first song and it took forever to load, frustrating as all heck and then was stuttering away for a while. NZ internet isn't fantastic but I don't usually get that kind of response to previewing tracks. What bit rate are you uploading at? Could be the problem that people are trying to listen to the tracks and giving up. Cheers Steve www.colourtonemedia.co.nz

I'm a sounclick supporter myself, despite some of the drawbacks. As posted, it saves a lot of energy and money from trying to boot something up on a homesite. I had maybe 2 recordings up on my homesite with many others I could'nt put up before soundclick. Good for some teaming also, if you use your mind with it. If one wants to get past critiques and know how you may want to proceed though, than the only logical alternative is to risk crucifying yourself musically and make that move getting hooked up with pro organizations to get further. At least you may be able to work out of an intermediate or semi-pro status as opposed to just lingering along.
I'm taking your advice and joining ASCAP, niteshift.

All the talk of IAC has made me join IAC. I uploaded an mp3. It is added exposure for free and more to gain a perspective from listeners on.

I have had a Soundclick page for several years, both a personal page and a page for a band I was in. With a vip page and some target advertising on the charts pages over there, I was able to generate about 1000 plays a month last Summer. I've since cut way back on my participation there and dont pay them anything anymore. It has to do as much with activity in their forums as anything. I've never been a part of a forum where there was as much fighting as there is over there.
I set up a free page over at IAC too. I got a ton of hits on just the two songs I had up. I need to revamp my page and expand it.
I keep a page over at Songplanet.com now which is my main page. Plus they have a terrific Internet Radio Station. I like the directness of their page as a hosting site and with the audience I try to reach, which is middle age people that come to SW Florida, I dont worry as much about them being offended by something if the happen to wander away from my page. I've seen Soundclick allow pictures on their main page that are a tad racy.
I'm also keeping a page over at IMusicscene.com. which is a review intensive site. They also have an Internet Radio associated with the site, Nice people and lots of talented people at both those sites.

I am dropping my VIP soundclick site. Going back to the free service. I thought the paid service would offer more than just a pretty page. It hasn't. One thing I have noticed is since the new upgrade at soundclick my plays have dropped off dramatically. But my page views have increased. Does not make any sense. Before the upgrade it was about equal.
I am getting 25 page views for 1 play. I don't understand that. Why would people be looking at my pages and not playing a song. Also I had hoped the demographics feature would be more detailed, Just listing the country does not tell you much. Especially the US. we have 50 states. It also does not require people to list their gender. so you don't get a sense of who is listening, male or female.

Bill, since Soundclick introduced the myspace like profile page, I think most people cruise the site using that. The whole site is in some transition.

Hey Henry,
Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to check out songplanet.com and IMusicscene.com as well. Put up your link for IAC, and I'll drop by , have a listen and say gidday.
Bill, yep, I get the same thing from soundclick, about 20 page views a day, and the odd song stream. I'm glad I don't pay for it.
cheers, niteshift

IMusicscene.com looks like a cool site, too. I wonder how many of these "music sites" exist in the world? I had never heard of IMusicscene.com, but it looks pretty big and well established.

Kevin, my friend Nigel Potter just recently linked me to IMusicscene, so I'm fairly new over there, but so far my experience has been good.
The thing about the sites is they come and go. I know mixposure was a popular site, but the people doing it never could keep it on line.

Something I wanted to add, Ourstage is a really good site. I did have songs there but they did something to harm my fragile ego and I pulled all my songs off, lol. I should go back.

Henry,
I took one of my songs out of competition over there at Ourstage. It had over a week of being in competition and no listens. My other three are doing well considering the number of listens. Ehh-what's it gonna hurt.

This topic is something I actually know something about. While I was in grad school and for several years after, I use to build, run, and market 'adult web sites' for models I knew. The money was better than anything I ever made at any 'real job' and I have decided to get back into it in order to make ends meet and get my feet back on the ground after this unforeseen illness knocked my bank account out for the count.
I understand that many people have a problem with sites like the ones I run (NOTE - I will never post links to them here), but I am perfectly fine with them. I am a liberal and my objections to pornography are mainly because of the way it depicts women as sexual objects. Because of that, I personally don't deal in the hardcore side of it, just soft-core stuff like Playboy. I understand that some people will even object to that, but that is their problem. I am doing nothing illegal and can look at myself in the mirror. I do not feel that I am exploiting anybody and I am certainly not contributing to the corruption of minors. All my sites are child protected and have visible warnings on them and are 2257 compliant (2257 being a reference to the record keeping bill passed by congress regulating the industry).
That said, I have learned a lot about marketing from my experience in the digital adult entertainment biz. With all due respect to musicians and music artists, 99.999% don't have a clue how to utilize the tools of cyberspace to market themselves and their music. Even mainstream businesses don't know what they are doing compared to porn web-masters, who are absolute masters of getting and converting traffic for profit.
The mainstream world is still ten years behind the adult world in terms of cutting edge marketing on the web. Every new advertising idea that comes into the mainstream has been around for 10 years in the adult internet world. If you really want to market your music, become an adult web-master and send a portion of your traffic to your music sites. The same college kids that download pictures of naked women also buy music CDs and have ipods. People who like sex ALSO LIKE MUSIC.
Just affiliating yourself with adult web-masters and offering them an affiliate program that will pay them a % of the profits for downloading your music will generate thousands of $$ in sales and dramatically increase your fan base. One of the biggest reasons that mainstream web-sites fail is because they think that paying their affiliates a minimum of 50% of all sales is far too much, and for the mainstream world it is. But consider that the sales made on this kind of traffic are sales that you otherwise would not have made and that you will be making tons of them.
Consider the itunes affiliate program, which is a complete joke. I don't known what they pay to the artist per sale of a song. For the sake of argument, let's say that they pay 60% to the artist, which means that they will get 40%f for each download. They currently pay 5% to their affiliates. An affiliate is a website owner who uses a special promotion link to send people to the itunes store to buy music.
The software on the itunes site matches the code in the url ton your account and pays you 5% of whatever the surfer buys when he/she is there. It will also keep that customer in its database as your customer and pay you 5% on any other purchases that customer makes for a given period of time, as specified in their agreement. Some mainstream affiliate programs don't do this, and the ones that do often limit the time they will pay on purchases of a new customer sent to them via your link.
A lot of them will only pay for what they send you from direct links from your site. In other words, if a customer bookmarks itunes and comes back later to buy, you don't get paid. Adult web-masters are SPOILED because they have many affiliate programs competing for their traffic, and they generally only go with sponsors who will give them the moon.
I would personally never waste my time promoting itunes for a 5% cut on a single sale, when I can promote a pay site and get my choice of $50.00 for an initial sign up (which only costs the surfer five bucks to join), or 60% of initial and all recurring revenue generated by that surfer.
It might seem like the people offering $50.00 pay outs for a $5.00 are crazy, but most of the people who sign up for the $5.00 trial will stay as members for a year or more and keep paying $35.00 every month, which over a year, comes to $420.00/year minus $50.00 = $370.00 to the company. Now multiply this by 5,000 each month and you can get an idea of what these sites make.
I generally opt for the 60% option, which pays me less right off the bat but more in the long run, $210.00 per year as opposed to a $50.00 one time fee. Most adult web-masters promote a both types of affiliates, based on how well they retain their members according to their records and statistics, which they analyze every day.
Why do these pay sites pay so much for sign ups? Easy. Because the web-masters sending them surfers aren't just sending them a few clicks a day. They are sending thousands. You need to re-define the meaning of internet traffic when you are looking at things from an adult web-masters perspective. Adult content web sites get 25x the amount of traffic that mainstream sites do. 70% of all people who sit down to surf the web at any given moment are looking for pictures of naked ladies (or naked guys). What does that say about us? We like sex.
That is one reason I get so angry at the hypocrisy of the far right. Most of the people doing the complaining surf for porn when no one is looking. Believe it or not, there is a much higher % of people looking for porn coming from red states than from blue states. I can track that data every day in my stats package on my server.
Web-masters have to know where their traffic is coming from because of the high likelihood of BANDWIDTH theft, i.e., people linking to your content and not your advertising, thereby STEALING your BW. BW is by far the highest expense for any online adult web-master business. Most web-masters will block traffic from troubled regions like Russia, which is filled with thieves and crooks. US and Canadian traffic from search engines is the best kind of traffic because it is the kind that generates the most sales. But I always get a smile when I see the flood of traffic coming from the bible belt areas, areas where you're not suppose ta be lookin' at that kind a' stuff. Maybe that's what I have so much of an attitude when I post about religion in these forums.
Anyway, the point is that the people in the music business are missing a golden opportunity by not aligning themselves with this market. Taking the itunes example, let's say that 100 affiliates sign up, and each one generates 10 sales, which comes to $10.00 in total income per affiliate, or $1,000.00 overall.
50% goes to the artist - $5.00 45% goes to the itunes - $4.50 5% goes to the affiliate - $0.50
For 100 affiliates, the company makes $450.00 The artist makes $500.00 The affiliates combined make $50.00
Looking at this, you can easily see why an affiliate would not want to waste his/her time on this. Now let's consider the adult web-master side. The more you offer an affiliate, the more affiliates you will get. So let's say you offer the artist less and you take less yourself. You pay the affiliate 60% off the top and you split the balance with the artist. Because of that offer, you will likely get many more affiliates sending you traffic and they will send you 25 times the traffic than mainstream affiliates will send, which will likely translate into 25x the number of sales. Let's say you get 1,000 affiliates selling (modestly) 25 downloads each (more sales are likely because of more traffic). Now you are making 25k overall per affiliate.
The affiliate gets 60% - $1,200.00 = $15,000.00 The company gets 20% = $5,000.00 The artist gets 20% - $5,000.00
The profits are much larger and the sales figures are much higher. That in turn will make the labels look more closely at your band. You will also generate a larger fan base, to which you can sell other products.
Of course, the bottom line in all this is that you have a have a great band with killer songs that puts on a kick AXE show every night. In other words, the products needs to be something that people want to buy. But if you have that, using this kind of marketing strategy can kick your exposure through the roof. Go to where the people are. They are looking at porn, so go there.

On Soundclick, I have 536 plays from 966 visits this month so far. Very few downloads. The biggest song is the one about Sarah Palin - They Call Her Barracuda.
Why do people visit a page and not listen to at least one song. That is curious to me. I notice this is true for most of the stat reports here on this thread.
