Again, I can't find anything that provides specifics on this. Let's say you get a cut with an artist on a major label and your cut is released as a single. The album and single are both released on May 1.

Approximately when will you receive your first mechanical royalties check?

Approximately when will your publisher receive the first performing rights royalties check and how long will it take for him to pay you the writer's share?

How often are mechanical royalties paid out and how often are performing rights royalties paid out? Quarterly? Annually?

mechanicals should be paid up front, they are paid based on the # of CDs manufactured (not what is sold). ((Film/tv) Synch licences will also be paid up front.)

your PRO will pay you the performance/songwriting royalties about 9 months after play in a registered venue or commercial radio station, etc. Check with your PRO about how often they remit to you.

If your publishing is paying you that information will be contained in your agreement (for example, statements & payments every 6 months).

IMO.

RbLight,
It looks like if you are registered as both a Publisher and a Writer you'd be getting paid about every other month, so maybe 6 times a year. They "flip flop" between, writer, publisher and then writer and publisher, so you might even get paid even more often, possibly monthly if you include collections from any foreign country performace royalties.

But I don't know what there pay out "threshold" is. It's probably some min. amount, but it may vary from Pro to Pro. On the other hand I've heard of some artists getting checks for as little as .65 cents. Encouraging, huh? wink

Michael

With SOCAN it takes nine months to get the first airplay royalties and twice that from airplay in a foreign country. Mechanical royalties are paid upfront for small pressings but for large pressings you only get paid as they sell. Mechanical royalties come from the record company, airplay royalties come from your PRO.

In a Publishing Contract it will state the times and dates you will get paid. It may be quarterly or semi-annually. Generally it may state royalities will be paid within 45 days after 30 June and 31 December. This is mechanical royalities of which a Label will pay the Publisher or any other royalities that goes thru the Publisher.

PRO royalities of which is paid directly to the songwriter may be as stated, about 9 months after the survey, if any are due.

If you place any songs directly in small units you probably want to collect up front for a stated number of units manufactured. If they press more units, collect up front and issue another license for that amount.

In the US mechanicals can be collected directly from the major labels. Royalties are paid quarterly, approximately 45 days after the end of each quarter. Usually a full quarter has to have passed before the first payment is made. So if your song is released in the middle of a quarter, you can expect to receive your first accounting 45 days after the following quarter. To illustrate, let's say that your song was released today (April 27, the middle of Q2). You'd receive your first check from the label around November 15 (45 days after the end of Q3). From that point on you'd receive another payment 45 days after the end of each quarter (as long the song keeps selling, that is).

Hope this helps!
