I'm thinking more along the lines of Big Jim now. And that's scary. But I've been persuaded into thinking that there really is no such thing as an uncoverable song. So while I was showering (when most inspiration hits) I thought of these songs that may be challenging, even though I'm sure they've been covered:

I do not know how to work those voting thingies....tried one before and it failed miserably....could you do it for us? Okay, I'll collect the list and make a poll on Monday...but I sure hope one poll will contain all these choices.  Or do we now have enough choices?... If you wnat onhe more may I suggest Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire".. I can't imagine anyone else doing it unless they were going to try to imitate JLL which I think does away with the make it yours thing, I personally would love to hear it with a different feel!

Hey not to open a new can of worms here, but i truly don't understand.. what are the legalities involved copyright wise in redoing any of these songs and posting them for distribution on the internet.. wouldn't that be piracy?
or more accurately copyright infringement?

We have a band called The Rusty Griswolds that do all 80's music and yes they do "Mama" and "Relax". There was a now-defunct band called "X-Tra Cheese" that specialized in cheezy 70's tunes and yes, they did "The Night Chicago Died" We have a guitar virtuoso named Sonny Moorman who tears up "Layla" {among others}. And as far as Dylan, Zevon, Cat Stevens, Floyd ect..Well there's Yours Truly!

I 've actually heard an industrial metal version of RELAX, but i don't know who the band was.. it was done live and it ROCKED! kinda like a NIN meets ministry style!

or more accurately copyright infringement? People do covers of other people's songs all the time and post them on YouTube. I doubt they contact the songwriters for permission. In terms of recordings and song usage, you typically pay a fee based on the number of CDs or other media produced for sale.

That is not quite right, what got those sites in trouble was posting music that was produced by others for sale, not covers of the works. For example, putting up a recording of John Lennon singing Imagine would be impinging on the potential sales of that song by the rightful owner.

i was talking about the assuming.. the people tthat downloaded were called "pirates" and all they did was assume something was O.K. because someone was running a site that gave them a forum to do it.. they assumed it was legal.. because they were just SHARING and if it weren't someone would have stopped napster... is it really LEGAL for youtube to post all of that music.. i listen to stuff there all the time.. I don't copy it so i am not a pirate, but I DOUBT it pays the artist! again this conversation belongs on another topic.. I truly just don't get it, so I'll just keep my mouth shut until i figure it all out ( or try to anyway!)

If you take a vote on which song, then it will be the easiest and most boring option probably.. you should pick something really off the wall so that people will really go "what in the hell is going on" when they come across it.

Hi Bob I also have covered about half of the songs on the list. Most of the other songs I have either never heard of or I do not think are worth covering. I am of course prepared to give it a go for the sake of the exercise.

Brian I'm glad to hear that, Brian, I've been wanting to post cover songs there for some time, asked the question more than once on the mentor board but never got an answer. I'll do that now, thanks. I agree that any song can be covered, but I think there are many songs that, if covered, would most likely never be hits again. Yes, I don't think we need any more, also many of those in the list are stock set songs anyway (which surely isn't the point of this thread) There are also quite a few that I don't even know, maybe they were stateside only hits. A pre-requisite should be that the song was a hit single (as opposed to an album track) and preferably both sides of the Atlantic. Also anything over 4 minutes should be ditched. Get your hatchet out Mark

So the question arises: how do you define "uncoverable"? A song that is so complex and technically challenging that no one has ever tried to perform it live (that Pink Floyd one), or a song & performance that is so in-grained into our minds that we can't accept it performed by another artist ("Imagine" John Lennon). Patti Labelle did a MONSTEROUS version of "Imagine" at "Live Aid" in 85'{as well as "Forever Young " by Dylan}

As I was reading responses, I thought of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Even Queen couldn't pull the whole piece off live. It has been covered by an acapella vocal group, but I'm with Greg on nominating this one. Most of us know it, but probably never performed it. You win the prize Tom... When the ACTUAL BAND can't pull it off live...

Just a note..you don't see many cover bands pull off ANYTHING by Frank Zappa, although my aforementioned Cincy band "The Menus" pull off "Cosmic Debris".

Bohemian Rhapsody has been pulled of MANY times.. I bet I've had over 100 versions of it in the last couple years in the awards and we even nominated 1 version of it in our Cover category and it finished second that year I think. One guy with an acoustic guitar. So there's nothing original about covering that song. Happens all the time.

Hey Brian - I like your suggestion about covering a JPF member song - there's some GOOD ones there. I think that should be the NEXT challenge though after this one.
