I'm wondering if any of you, or your family members, have eating quirks. Of course if you do it, you do not condier it a quirk, probably. But, if not many other folks do it, it's proibably a quirk anyway!
My wife has several. She MUST (it is not an option) have a desrt with her dinner. Not required for lunch. But, she insists on a dessert for dinner. If I do not make one, she will call an eatery with a delivery service that has desserts and have one delivered. It is a REQUIREMENT...not a preference. Personally, if I never had another dessert again, I would be fine. I like one occasioanlly but never NEED one. I'm not much of a sweets persons. I rather haver something with way too much salt than anything with a lot of sugar.
Also, my wife refuses to eat chili unless she has both cornbread and cole salw. I made a 5-quart pot of chili several weeks ago but didn't have any cabbage to make cole slaw. She wouldn't touch the chili until I went to the store and got cabbage for the cole slaw. She then ate it (I had cornbread already) said it was some fo the best chili she had ever eaten. But reiterated that she would not have taken a single bit without the cole slaw.
Personally, each food item stand on its own. I don;t need this in order to also eat that. I might lke it better with the other item and prefer to have the other item; but I won't refuse to eat something I like just because I don't have something else I like. I don't need beer for pizza. It;'s fine, but I don't NEED it!
Before my wife became severely disabled, she was the General Manager of a Plastic Extrusion and Injection Molding plant in California. One of her employees put mustard on EVERYTHING!!!! And I do mean everything. Whatever was one her plate got mustard...meat, veggies, salad, cookies, pudding, pie, cake...it ALL got mustard. She said the only thing she didn't put mustard on was fresh strawberries. other than that...it got mustard.
The wife of one of my freinds has an odd eating quirk. She puts ketchup on her ice cream. Flavor is inconsequential. If it's ice cream or sherbert, it gets ketchup...strawberry, peach, vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, etc. They all got ketchup.
My aunt and uncle, both deceased, put both ketcup and mustard on their mashed potatoes. All other potatoes got ketchup...yes, even potaotoes au gratin and scalloped potatoes!
My brother and his wife do not use salad dressings, such as Thousand island, Ranch, etc. They put different flavors of jelly on their green salads. I'll pass!
My step-daughter from my previous marriage made Rainbow Mashed Potatoes. She put three or four drops of each color of food coloring in the mashed potatoes when they were otherwise ready to eat. She whipped them six or eight times with a wooden spoon and ended up with the colors of the rainbow streaked throughout the potaties. They were a HUGE hit with her friends. Food coloring has no taste, so I didn't mind. My ex-wife, however, could not bring herself to eat them...or blue peas, or red green beans! Again, they were fine with me.
Here's a snadwich my mother eats regularly:
Thick helping of creamy peanut butter on the bread, squirt ketchup over the peanut butter, add a slice of tomato and top it off with a teaspoon of horseradish. When Mom asks if I'm hungry when visiting her, the answer is ALWAYS "NO!!!!!!!"
How about you? Anything intetresting or unusual. Just wondering.
Alan

Oh I'm gonna hurl! Food should not be treated that way. Actually, my girlfriend has a bit of a quirk, when it comes to food. She HATES it if foods touch `their neighbor' while on her plate. I have to laugh, because it all ends up touching sooner or later!

Everyday when I get an urge for an afternoon treat, I eat a kosher dill spear. It satisfies my urges every time.
Of course, I keep stocked-up on those dills. I have one everyday whether I need it or not. Usually at 2PM.

Well, right now I am eating a lot of carrots, soup and yogurt .... I tend to go from food to food.
I enjoy watching Bizarre Foods and No Reservations on tv sometimes. Those guys eat some things are are quite alien to me but which are quite normal to the people in the cultures that eat them. It makes me realize how restricted and sanitized my food is.
As far as dessert, I am with your wife.

I have to laugh, because it all ends up touching sooner or later! I had to giggle at this one...reminds me of a preschooler! I have to have dark chocolate with my coffee every morning...not a bunch, just a little piece. Dark chocolate with coffee, and no one gets hurt! My daughter can't eat a bowl of cereal with milk. She fills the bowl with milk, and adds a tiny bit of cereal to it at a time.

The only thing I have to 'fess up to is that I'll often try to identify the "best bite" of any meal and save that one for last, which means that I usually eat the veggies first just to get 'em outta the way.
I used to have trouble watching an ex girlfriend put orange juice on her cereal instead of milk...But she was from Holland, so I guess I should be thankful that it wasn't mayonnaise:-)

But she was from Holland, so I guess I should be thankful that it wasn't mayonnaise:-) Yeah, we sure have some strange eating habits over here Reminds me of a poster in my Economy teacher's class room. It said (in Dutch) "Those darned foreigners with all their weird eating habits!" and then showed a picture of two Dutchies eating herring, not unlike this one: http://www.thefryingdutchman.co.nz/images%20reworked/haring%20happen.jpg

I have a friend who CANNOT eat bread if it has been mushed even the slightest bit. Me I'm just shy of a human garbage disposal. If I can catch it (even if I have to shoot it first) I'll eat it (well at least try it). That being said I'm both 1/4 Italian and an Eagle scout I can make my family recipe lasagna in a dutch oven in a primitive campsite without running water or electricity

Lots of very interesting replies! I'm enjoying the heck out of reading them. Thanks for sharing them the rest of us.
For me personally, th eonly thing I can think of that might be called a quirk is that when I get out of the shower in the morning, I pop the top on a Dr. Pepper and pull a jalepeno pepper out of the jar. That's breakfast every day. But, for the record, I eat a LOT of jalepenos. Thery come in mild medium, hot and fire department must be on hand when opened...I go for the fire department variety.
Nadia...Happy Easter to you as well!
Tom, my friend, no hostage situation. I'm very happy that i am able to help Helen as I can. Joe Harris (Samuel Joseph Harris) asked me, when he and I were in Nashville together a couple of years ago, about the responsibilities in our situation. I'll offer you the same reply I gave Joe...when it's someone you love, all those things are not burdens, they're just the next things on the list. Helen's a pretty cool girl. She deserves it all...and more. But thank you for the kind thoughts and words.
Happy Easter to all of you!
Alan

Hey Alan. I like pickled jalapenos in the jar but also like canned jalapenos. The hottest are the raw ones. Do you eat raw jalapenos? I love the whole pickled jalapenos that "Popeyes" serve. I wish that I knew where they get them.

I used to say I had a cast iron stomach. I don't say that anymore. Onions give me fits but onion powder doesn't bother me at all.
I knew this kid who swore he could tell if the beef patty in a hamburger was put on the bun upside down. He would send them back if they were upside down. I thought he was an idiot.
Lately I've been rinsing all my fruit. I used to just eat it. Now I rinse bananas and apples and whatever else.
I also started rinsing cans off because one day in the store I saw a guy standing on a case of soup cans. Who knows where his shoes have been? Who knows how many other cases he has stood on?
Until recently I had a thing about eating the end pieces of bread. I still feel funny about it but I'll do it in a pinch. I have no idea why.

Ben,
My only criteria is they must be jalapenos. I eat them from the garden, from the jar, from the can, whatever...same is true for habeneros. Habeneros are a bit hotter than jalapenos and have a totally different taste...spicier but somewhat more bitter.
Haven't tried the ones from Popeyes. There's a Popeyes a few miles from us. I'll have to check them out soon!

eb,
I assume when you say the end pieces of the bread you are referring to the heels. My wife will not eat them either. Makes me no difference.
Another difference between my wife and me is that almost every sandwich on which I put mustard, she puts mayonaise, ie: I put mustard on bologna and fried ham sandwiches, she puts mayonaise on them.
And although I like dill pickles just fine, I slightly prefer sweet pickles or bread-n-butter pickles on my burgers.
Thanks for your comments.

I happen to love the heels of a loaf of bread. I take them first, which is usually no problem because the rest of the family avoids them anyway. They have more flavor and texture and I have always eaten them, even as a kid.

When I was pregnant for my first child I developed a craving for spaghetti and peanut butter sandwiches.still having one probably at least once a week(16 years later). Also when cooking ground beef,I have to have a little pinch of the raw(bloody )meat. My mom says its my bodys way of letting me know I'm lacking some kind of nutrient but she insists that I stop.(she claims its dangerous, and that I may be a vampire..lol).

I do the SAME THING Michelle! I love meat that is almost rare. Yeah, it's supposedly not healthy, but whatever. We probably crave iron. I try to take it, but it hurts my stomach. Wow, this is so weird that I have all these food issues that so many other people do. Kewl!
