A little early morning smooth jazz for you. The chords were complicated and it's in 5/4 -- so I didn't really know what I was doing and I didn't have a plan (ha, ha).

The piano part was supposed to be an alto sax, but I couldn't find anything that sounded "real", so I switched it to a Steinway Grand soundfont.

MP3: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7517363
(EDIT: OK, I changed back to the sax on this take in the 3rd go around. Not perfect, but it did seem "OK".)

Note: If any instrumentalists here want to take a crack at it, here's the backing track: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7516232. The chord chart is at: http://www.jkt9000.com/html/5_4_swing_Chords.jpg

Hi Kevin,

Very cool and smooth. It's no longer early morning, but it's just the thing for a mid-morning pick me up! It sure sounds like you know what you're doing, but what do I know? smile

Hi Kevin,

Very nice!

Your pianist doesn't overdo it like mine has a tendency to. I wanted the organist WAY UP and CENTER for his solo, never happened: my only nit.

Nice crisp drumming on this too!

I went for the BIAB update, the hard drive. That thing had 400 gigabytes in there :o hah...I'm telling you grin

Mike

Ricki: Thanks for stopping by. I am not a jazzer, but I enjoyed giving it a try. I started out well on my solo, but then I became more concerned about not "sounding bad" instead of trying to "sound good" (ha, ha). Just a little complex.

Charles: Thanks for listening and commenting. Oh 5/4 is pretty cool and it isn't as hard as it's made out to be. The chords on the other hand.....

Mike: I just remixed and threw in a midi sax in place of some of the piano parts in chorus 3. I missed your comments on the organ player or I would have tried turning that up (I still can, I guess!). You went for the "audiophile" version with the 500GB drive and WAV files -- good for you! I got the 80GB drive and the WMA file version. For professional work, I guess the WAV version is mandatory.

Kevin

Kevin,

I really dug this one. Would you be interested to putting some words to it? I was hearing something about a bus and two people who can't quite connect. Don't ask me where this stuff comes from. Anyway, I enjoyed this very much.

KEVIN!!!!!!!!

Am I impressed, or what? The answer is: IMPRESSED!

Wow, my friend, you really nailed this one. It must be nice to not what you're doing this nicely. 5/4 timing is one of my very favorite time signatures. Dave Brubeck made it popular many years ago. But, you don't hear it all that often.

Your guitar playing is exceptional on this. This is, by far, my favorite of all your works. This is a great song, performed impeccably well. I am standing and clapping for you. This cut is just plain cool! Great job, my friend! I quit clapping just long ewnough to type this. With my bum hand, typing is difficult (playing is impossible for a while yet), but it is well worth the effort required. I loved it!

If you can play those chords in that timing, then you must be a musician. grin

That chord chart made me dizzy!

This is smooth, Kevin - maybe not knowing what you are doing is the secret to jazz. I'm really impressed by this - your best instrumental to date imo.

Wendy: Thanks so much for listening -- and definitely feel free to add lyrics (I sent you a PM).

Al: Does that mean you like it? When I posted the link to the backing track, I was thinking that you and Moker might give it a whirl -- but I forgot about your injured hand.
Actually, I am very pleased with the way the recording turned out. It is probably tough for me to do well on this "live", but in recording, I can work around my inexperience with this genre. All 5/4 jam tunes that I have run into always sound like Take 5 (a great song, of course), but this one got my attention because it was a little different. Thanks again for the nice comments.

Scott: I can't play those chords! Actually not being able to fall back on 1-4-5 blues licks made me pay more attention. Maybe I'll try a few more of these. BIAB must have a few hundred built in jazz tunes to fool around with.

Ian: Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it.

Calvin: Yea, it's a little something different from me. Maybe I'll get back to lyrics soon, but I am still burned out from February's RPM CD! Thanks.
