Ah Dan,
You hit on my VERY favorite folk song. I've loved and sung that song for many, many years and it still brings the tears. If I think I'm going to get through it once without any tears, the "dirge" line gets me every time

Hey Wy,
by the way I read an account of Stephen Foster, in it he said of all the songs he wrote the only one he felt people would remember was Hard Times Come again No More ... well he was wrong since we forgot none of his songs but this was the one most important to him personally ...

I used to perform this song solo in coffeehouses all the time too. It's wonderful with just voice and Hawaiian slide guitar accompaniment.

sounds like you like folk music also, I put a couple of my old favorites on my player like the Bonnie ship the diamond and Blue Mountain ... just great old songs ... slide guitar is perfect for the Hard Times ... would love to hear your version sometime. I dragged this one too much I think .. need to move it along a bit faster.

Yeah, if Stephen ever wrote a bad one, he must not have put it out.
I understand the pesonal thing. It hits home with most anybody who's been through the school of hard knocks.
As far as dragging ut out, the version I remember and I don't even know who was doing it, was even slower than the way you did it and I thought brought out the poignancy even more. I believe he slowed it down on certain passages but that's a lot of years ago.
There was another song I always associated with this one for some reason that I can't quite remember the name of.
Some of it went
"Now I'm walking the streets of the city"
"But no one has seen you go past".
"They say that I'm cnasing a mem'ry"
"My first love affair and my last"
Google could tell me I'm sure

Dan...I have heard this sung at MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME when they do the Stephen Foster Story live, and I have to say the singer

I also like the way you sing this. You make it sound like a hymn, which is what I always thought Foster was after.
So please don't take this as criticism, just something you could try if you like.
The chord progression you're playing is very non-traditional for this song. If you're doing that deliberately, well, my bad. But the traditional progression of this song, to me anyway, is as characteristic as the words in a couple of places.
The traditional version of this song doesn't use minor chords at all, although they certainly fit. And I'm about as traditional as a tofu taco myself, so that in itself doesn't bother me. But honestly, I think the way you use the minor chord isn't as effective as the traditional progression just because you use it so often.
I'm not sure what key you're in, but let's say C.
You're doing this...
Let us (C) pause in life's pleasures
And (F) count its many (Am) tears.
While we (C) all sup (G7) sorrow with the (C) poor.
The traditional way....
Let us (C) pause in life's pleasures
And (F) count its many (C)tears
(F)While we (C) all sup (G7) sorrow with the (C) poor. (G)(C)(G7)
Regardless of whether you play C or Am at "tears," the characteristic progression of this song is to go to the F for "While we"
It gives a lift to the melody that allows you not to have to use the Am every time.
At any rate, you might think about mixing it up and not going to the Am every time. I've heard people very effectively save the minor for "cabin door" in the chorus.
The other characteristic progression is in the first half of the chorus.
You're doing this...
Tis the (C) song, the sigh if the (F)wea(C)ry.
(C) Hard times hard times
Come again no more (G7)
Traditional ....
Tis the (C) song, the sigh if the (F)wea(C)ry.
(C) Hard times (F) hard (C) times
(D) Come a(D7)gain no (G) more (G7)
Having that secondary dominant chord distinguishes the chorus from the verse really simply but powerfully.
Anyway, I hope you took this in the intended spirit because I really do like how you sing this song. Have a good New Year.

thank you for your kind suggestions, I messed around with the chords because I wanted to try something a little different with the picking style I have which is pretty ackward :-) but I like your suggestions for sure ... I give it a try, that was really kind of you... thank you

Hi Dan, This is just one more reason why Wyman and I never married  -- it's one of his favorite folks tunes, yet I'm embarassed to say I've never heard it before.  BUT, having listened to it twice through now, I can understand why he is so drawn to it. Quite a moving lyric and your interpretation is lovely and understated.
