Anybody heard of this one? 9 strings!
One of the other players on this local TV show we were on had a strange-looking 9-string guitar, 6 machines on the right of the headstock, 3 on the left. My first guess was three extra bass strings, but when I talked to the guy after his set, it turned out the three lows were normal E, A, D, and the other six were in pairs, also in standard. That is, each pair were tuned to the same note, G,B,E. I suppose you could make them harmonic if you wanted, but this guy was just using them for mandolin/banjo type sounds, while doing bass runs on the bottom. It was an Alvarez Yairi, which he says is a handmade premium brand. I have heard of Alvarez before, but not Yairi. Yairi is apparently the original luthier in Japan. The player of this guitar told me he bought it about 30 years ago. Anyway, it was a beautiful and great-sounding instrument, and I have never seen one before tonight. Have you?

I've seen quite a few Alvarez Yairis over the years, though I haven't seen this exact one. Taylor is now making an 8-string that doubles the D and G string (I think) leaving the two bass strings, and two treble strings solo. I have yet to try that one either, though I'd love to give all the odd guitars test drives.

Yes, Alvarez Yairis are the top-of-the-line Alvarez guitars. They are very well made, nice guitars. The nine string configuration, although pretty rare has been around for years. There aren't very many of them because they don't exactly sell like hotcakes.

I've got an Alvarez Yairi but it's only got 6 strings, I could probably get by with 4.

Also check out the Martin Roger McGuinn signature 7 string which has a doubled G string with the extra string an octave higher. My musical partner has one and I made my own. You can play 12 string solos on the G string, and get the 12 string chime without the other 5 strings slowing you down. Roger uses his in his solo concerts a lot.

I bought my Alvarez Yairi new in 1982, and it's been my constant companion for 28 years now. I prefer it over several Martins, Taylors and Gibsons I've tried...although there are certainly some Martins and Gibsons that sound better. Sometimes it's really a matter of your personal relationship with a guitar...this one for me is juuuuuuuust right. Looks like this one: Pic of Alvarez Yairi DY-45
