Ummm Niteshift

I will stick with my lyric writing as it is in the knowledge
that It's not as good as it could be.

If I do learn an instument and some chords, do I get to be in the exclusive club .. lol

--- quote ----

I'll just pay you to write my lyrics, then pay a bunch of session guys to write the melody, then call the songs my own, and then call myself a songwriter. Too easy.....

--- un quote ----

I think my lyrics are worth far more than you do( you can disagree on that). After all it's only a few lines of words.

But I do have a heap of lyrics if you want to buy them... Oh no that not legal anymore.

Ah well I will just have to keep them.

It's been interesting but lets all move on PLEASE.

God Bless Roy and Helen (lyricists)(wanna-be-songwriters)

Big Jim:

Ok I don't write to a musical pattern except what I feel, so maybe I am missing out. It's the work that I put in that is the crux of the matter. A lot of time and effort. I don't just penn them out.

--- quote ---
I also think it is ethically dubious to claim creative and financial rights and rewards for work that is clearly in the main done by others. Sadly this seems to have become accepted practice in the industry as needs must for starving musicians.
--- unquote ---

I dont claim creative credit Big Jim. But I never invented this system. I want the best that I can get and if someone is willing to do it FOR MY HARD EARNED money then I am fine with that.

If the studio who does my music etc said to me that they won't charge me but want the music rights then I would go for it.

I am not greedy. They invented the system. Pay now and take the risk. That's what I do.

--- quote ---
The music history books are littered with musicians who were the real force responsible for a hit but only got paid a pittance on a work for hire agreement.
--- unquote ---

I am not saying this is not so Big Jim and I do understand.
But. When I pay quite a lot of mpney for a demo, I can only use that as a demo. As it is I can't make any return on my investment. Unless I get a cut with it and then maybe still I will make nothing.

So I have 20 songs done in the studio and spend a vast sum of money and none of them go anywhere. Do I get money back.

If an artist hears my demo and says I love this song but instead of a ballard I want to do it as a rap so your melody will have to go.

Do I get a refund from the studio. No. They are already working on their next demo song.

Overall I suspect that lyric writers are the big losers when it comes to spending money at demo studios. (I could be wrong)

These are not my rules Big Jim. I used to use studios in London and can remember paying $5000 for a demo.

The song never saw the light of day, but according to the studio guy, I had a guarenteed No.1 hit. Yep he saw me coming.

So I'm wiser now. Some of the musicans who work on my songs and get paid by me may be working for a pittance.

But Big Jim. I pay two weeks wages for those demos and me and Helen live on cheap food to be able to do that.

It is our choice to do that so we can't complain. When a studio gives a price, it is their choice.

Looking at Niteshifts comments earlier, I could say to the musicians instead of being a musician get a Job that pays more. Learn to be a computer tek like me, but I wouldn't dream of saying that.

We all do what we do by choice.

Anyway gotta go know for a while.

God Bless roy and Helen

Kevin you agree with me 100% on my point (which to most people should be a blindingly obvious no brainer anyway) and then make sly insults claiming I do not know the difference between fact or opinion encouraging people to laugh at me.....please talk me through that logic. Or is it as Nite say just malevolence.

There is a fine line anyway between fact and opinion.....there are always some people trying to disprove or deny facts and some who try to prove opinion.

Roy you may be aquainted with Brits abroad.....they do not speak the lingo but get by cause most foreigners have taken the trouble to learn to speak English and accomodate them.....Some Brits do learn foreign languages and their lives overseas are enhanced by it.
Lyric writers who do not learn music are like Brits abroad....Nuff said.

Helen asked to to mention that she had two songs done where she whistled the tunes she had in her head to the studio.

God Bless Roy and Helen

ps. I will when I feel I have a suitable set of lyrics take you up on your co-write offer.

me and helen both love your music and singing by the way.

Thanks in advance Roy and Helen

As you might remember, I started this thread over a year ago: Why are there so many lyric-only folks?, so while I agree with you, I also take the approach that insulting folks (intentional or not) doesn't seem to be a good way to win friends and influence people. "Sly insults" -- didn't know I was being sly. "Malevolence" -- not enough close, but I am insulted that you think so.

Yes, time to move on, knowng that Roy will get off that computer, and go sit under a tree, or in a nice wrm pub, with pen and paper, and actually write a real song. He may even be inclined to pick up an instrument and noodle away. smile

Wishful thinking ? Hope not.

cheers, niteshift

There was nothing sly about it... nor was it malevolence...

And it comes back to that we are not attacking your/ or Nites opinion... even though we reserve the right to hold a different one..... most of us agree the more we know the better we can be... and many have taken the time to do that, not that we are prepared to call ourselves musicians or melody writers...
we object to the nasty insulting way it is put accross.

And if you don't like how Kevin talks to you perhaps you should look at how you talk to the people he calls friends....

the golden rule is do unto others and you would have them do unto you.

As Roy's wife said ... how many times has a lyric writer given away the rights to the melody that they sang to the person who finally put music to their song.... I've done it once or twice myself.... there are sad stories every where....

Cheers

I downloaded this quite awhile ago and have found it to be very useful. Another neat feature is the syllable count. In the text editor you can have it displaying the number of syllables per line. Kind of neat way to see the meter at a glance.

Also, just a bit of my input: I've been writing software for over 20 years and learned the hard way that you don't make any money selling software to end users. The only way to make money writing software (unfontunately) is to work for a company that needs or sells software. I suspect that is what this guy learned as well.

I don't see any feature limitations or time limit or strings attached to this program. It is free for the taking and quite a powerful and clever tool.

I found it interesting to look into the guy who wrote the program. He's quite an interesting and accomplished person. Many talents. And this program was not a trivial endeavor. What he has produced and given away freely was a major endeavor.

As far as how much hard drive space it consumes... If a program takes less than 100MB nowadays, it's not even a blip. If you're haggling over a free creation such as this because of the space it might take up, it's time to buy a new hard drive. You can get a terabyte (that's a 1,099,511,627,776 bytes) for about $50.

Just my 2 cents.
