If you have product, or can custom produce it, there are many markets, locally, regionally, nationally, globally. If you have product.
Trying to be the next big thing is ambitious, perhaps overly ambitious if you don't have the cosmetic appearance the 'big thing' demands, or the product for it.
But you may have a perfectly reasonable shot at lots of smaller markets, advertising, film, tv, and maybe even your own regional fame as an artist.
And there can be an income stream in merchandising too, hats, t-shirts, pictures, buttons, sew-on patches, etc.
Venues for live performance may be more plentiful than you think. Colleges, universities, high schools, grad schools, corporate events, libraries, chamber of commerce events, festivals, house concerts, parades.
The 'outside-the-box' cliche is appropriate in finding markets for what you have to sell.

Gary, your post is more realistic. Everybody wants to be a rock star and they think its like winning the lottery. Wam! There it is. I think that its better to win them over at the local level first and it is not a solitary endeavor. Ya gotta have a team.

If you can't generate a significant local and regional following, or win a TV music show contest, you're not going to have many pathways to stardom. Nor do you deserve any. How will millions of fans love you if 100's don't in your home town?

Hey Brian, I think Everett (in his own way) meant that it can be more difficult to generate a local following. I remember from my band years that the locals gave more praise to out-of-town bands than the locals. Though when we performed out-of-town we were greeted more receptively. Don't know the psychological implications of that phenomenon (don't think I want to know). However, when a local band did achieved a degree of fame, the locals would then rally around them. John

When I worked in industry, the definition of an expert was someone who came from more than 50 miles away. Such experts were often foisted on the local engineering people. Probably doesn't mean much in music!
The video was interesting and I am sure he is right, but Berklee is highly motivated to sell potential students on studying music which is probably a challenge at the moment.
He is right about the proliferation of crap on TV which has music in the background.

John Gotta agree John. When playing away in a smaller town, we were always treated well. Them local girls, especially, were very kind to poorly feeling musicians who were a long way away from home, and needed some comforting. cheers, niteshift
