Pass It Along
©2011 Steven M. Biederman
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11097307

It was raining at the diner
Someone said it might turn to snow
Late at night and miles from home
I ordered coffee to go
When a young girl recognized me
From the poster on the door
Said you're the guy who was singing at the church
Then she said a whole lot more

She said...
I believed in Jesus long ago
But He let me down so I took another road
Today Jesus to me is no big deal
That's the way I feel
And I challenge you to prove to me he's real

And I said....
I am no prophet
And I cannot show you signs
I'm just a guy who writes some songs
To help make sense of life
And they serve me as my road map
To remind me where I'm going
They're all about the love of Jesus
And when I sing I can pass it along

She said....
I used to go to church there
back When I was just a kid
But I did something real bad wrong
And I haven't been back since
I was 17 and pregnant
And I had to leave my home
The church and my folks disowned me
So I've raised the child alone

I told her....
I am no prophet
And I cannot show you signs
I'm just a guy who writes some songs
To help make sense of life
And they serve me as my road map
To remind me where I'm going
And they're all about the love of Jesus
And when I sing I can pass it along

I've got a wife and two fine kids
And I travel lots of road
And sometimes I can't be there
So my wife takes up the load
And sometimes I feel guilty
But we know what God has in store
She's got her job and I've got mine
And that's how we serve the Lord

So I got my guitar and I sang the songs
I sing in all my shows
I played them soft so I wouldn't draw attention
But a crowd began to grow
I sang of God's forgiveness
Like Jesus was there you know
I could have gone on forever
But it was time for me to go

She said,,,
I know I've been a sinner
In fact I've never done too much right
I'm a girl with little to give
I've not done much with my life
But I'd like to give you something
If you won't think it wrong
Then she kissed me on the cheek
And with moist, red eyes, she said
When you get home you can pass it along

Hey Steven,
I liked the message and loved the music! I believe it would pack more punch, though, if you could prune it down to at least the 4 minute mark...and it would be great if you could introduce the title somewhere around the 1 minute mark.

Hi Stevie

This is beautiful, and I too loved the message. I agree with R.Shayne, you can very easily take out a lot of the "and" it will flow a lot better for your lovely voice, and will fit nicely to your music. Other than that, Well done! smile

Thanks for the feedback Shayne. Good suggestions on the first two lines. Originally the female character was going to be the waitress but a waitress wouldn't be confrontational so I changed it. As for the length, I cut it down as much as I could to maintain the integrity of the story. Story songs tend to go long anyway and I'm not looking for radio play. I think it will go over well in a live performance judging from feedback I've gotten elsewhere.

I was wondering if the story would sound "contrived" but so far everyone who's heard it says it isn't so that's a positive. I also changed the title from YOU CAN PASS IT ALONG To just PASS IT ALONG as the "you can pass it along" doesn't come till the last line of the song.

Thanks again for the listen and suggestions,

Stevie

Stevie..

Di and I listening...and smiling! Glyn pretty much beat me to the punch about trimming by taking out a few of the superfulous words. But, that said, the length doesn't bother me all that much. It's just that those unneeded words slightly interrupt the flow. All in all, we like it a bunch...good job! All the best...

Steven, If I were looking to play this by ear one day I think I'd need to practice those unpredictable chord patterns and timing changes for a year or two to get it down..lol.. But that is exactly what endears my to the tune and your wonderful storytellin' voice as well. The point is, you was savin' souls brother !! Extrememly unique in all the world..

Hi Stevie,

I love this kind of song, love the message. A lot of story songs are long, I mean look at “Boys of Fall” I think it’s over 8 minutes!

I was following along reading the lyric while listening and when you sang about how she’s done some real bad things; I recalled something I once read in the Bible. I don’t remember where it was so if anyone knows I’d love to know, but basically it said those that are forgiven the most love the most. That always stuck with me.

This is a very good song. smile

Stevie,

Love the music on this, it really takes on the conversation well and represents the characters. Not sure how this could be cut down, but it didn't "seem" too long to me, but I get all caught up listening to your voice!!

Nice one, Stevie - I think you are taking the right approach with these songs - meaning not being preachy but relating experiences in a positive and convincing way. This one is no exception.

Good story - I didn't notice the length. Only listened once so I may be wrong on this but it seemed to have a number of different musical sections. Kinda like Thunder Road. In any case, it never got stale.

Sounds like someone gave Harry Chapin a lyric and he called in Roger McGuinn for help smile

At first I thought there was too much reverb on the lead vox, but I got used to it as it went along. But you might want to consider looking at that.

Interesting and well told story.

Good story and its not as preachy as some of these songs can be. So, keep that guitar tuned and that voice ready and just keep passing these types of songs on...
Take care,

Gives me chills, Little Stevie. It's little long, but I had enough time to listen, because the lyrics have such a nice conversational feel to them. I felt like I was eves-dropping the whole time! Great message. Made my day!

Hi, Stevie!! I really love this one! I love the music and the changes... that's what kept me hooked in as you sang this great story!! The story is beautiful, and so heartfelt... makes me imagine even what happens after the song ends... can't help but feel that this girl is gonna be alright! smile

Nice idea here Stevie and I liked the chord changes.

It could be shorter and sweeter and you might wanna check California Dreamin - as I felt there was a little bit of similarity - which could be a good thing.

Nice ending verse connection or loop back to the entry of the song, by the way.

Darrell,

That is the biggest and best compliment I've ever recieved. Thank you so much. You made my day.

I was following along reading the lyric while listening and when you sang about how she’s done some real bad things; I recalled something I once read in the Bible. I don’t remember where it was so if anyone knows I’d love to know, but basically it said those that are forgiven the most love the most. That always stuck with me.

This is a very good song. smile

Thanks Dottie. That means a lot to me.

Nice guitar playin. I agree it is a well thought out story line and the singing is nicely done. i had a little trouble following the melody between the verses and chorus. It seemed like it kept changing around so i kind of got lost with the feel .. but it makes a good story. Keep up the good work.

Scott

Hey Scott,

I'm glad it kept your interest all the way through. I know it's a long story song but I can't think of any way to shorten it without compromising on the message as a whole. If I was to cut one part it affects another and so on. Thanks for the listen and comments. I appreciate it.

Interesting and well told story.

You're right Kevin. It did have too much reverb. I put a small reverb on the vocal and then made the mistake of putting more over the master. I've gone back and corrected it. Thanks for the input.

It could be shorter and sweeter and you might wanna check California Dreamin - as I felt there was a little bit of similarity - which could be a good thing.

Nice ending verse connection or loop back to the entry of the song, by the way.

Doug

Thanks Doug. Not sure what you mean about a connection to California Dreamin'.
