UPDATE Bobby Bare and Petter Øien WON the qualifying Eurovision finals a few minutes ago, so now they will be competing in the Norwegian final in a week. The winner of the final will compete in the European Eurovision finals in Baku, Azerbajan in May!

Here's the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQg38m1SWQA

Hi Magne:

I can't imagine why but I was of the opinion that Bobby Bare had gone to meet his maker long ago. Geez, he's bound to be nearly as old as me... LOL! (Doesn't look that way in the picture, though!)

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, he's looking great. I remember back in the 70'ies, when I first was exposed to country music, it was Bobby Bare.. "Detroit City", that twangy riff sounded awesome. Oh, Lord I waaana goo home..

Mags, I remember "Detriot City" from childhood. What really turned me on to Bobby Bare was the song "Marie Laveau". My mother loved the song. My fathers name was Jack and mom called him "Handsome Jack" after the character in the song. Funny tune.

I remember when Bobby toured and hung out with Tom T. Hall. I had some friends who owned a resort cottage motel on Captiva Island in the 80's. They pulled up one day in Tom T. Hall's tour bus. Stayed for a while and did some saltwater fishing.

I never got to meet them, but after I showed up was told that I missed it.

Bobby Bare made a pretty good living covering Shel Silverstein songs. In fact, he did and entire album of them called "Lullabyes, Legends and Lies" which contained the best songwriter song ever written: Sure hit songwriter's pen.

Now I was hangin' round Nashville writin' songs and playin' 'em for all of the stars
Watchin' 'em laugh and hand 'em back livin' on hope and Hershey bars
So I pawned my guitar and bought a ticket home and I's headin' for the Trailway bus
When I seen an old fountain pen laying in the gutter so I stopped and picked it up
It was worn-out bent and cast aside you know kinda sorta like myself
So I sat down on the curb and wrote a little song
That told the world how both of us felt
Then I run that song down to Music Row and before I had time to spit
It's pitched and sold and cut for a record
And moving up the charts and damn it's a hit
So I wrote me another winner then I wrote me a smash again
And I's a flyin' off the ground cause I knew I'd found me a sure hit songwriter's pen
So the songs they just kept a'pourin' out and the money kept pouring in
I just couldn't miss all it took was a twist of my sure hit songwriter's pen
Remember when I won the Grammy then I won it again and again
Well none of you knew that it was all due to my sure hit songwriter's pen
I was darling with all the ladies I was a hero among the men...
Making big dough working rodeos and TV shows me and my sure hit songwriter's pen
But then one night in Wichita I was just coming off of the stage

Folks all lined up and did crawl for my autograph Lord I was a national rage
One little freckled face girl was there she said I got no pencil sir
So I signed it with my songwriter's pen and then handed the pen back to her
Four o'clock that morning I wake up with the shakes and the bends
With terror in my eyes cause good God I realized I'd lost my sure hit songwriter's pen
I offered rewards in the papers I pleaded on the Sympathy Line
And a whole lotta folks and a whole lotta pens but none of them pen's was mine
So my songs got worse and my money ran out and so did all my so-called friends
And there was no doubt I was nothing without my long-lost sure hit songwriter's pen
So I rolled like a stone down old Skid Row where I feed my blues on wine
And I rest my chops in a two-bit flop and I tell my story for a drink or a dime
And I sleep with my shoes underneath my head and I dream about days back then
When I blazed my name across the sky with my sure hit songwriter's pen
Somewhere in Wichita some little girl who's a freckled face nine or ten
Is doing her arithmetic homework tonight with a sure hit songwriter's pen
God bless ya honey you got yourself my sure hit songwriter's pen

Hey Mags, I've gotten to play with Bare a few times as part of the Country Gold Show, put on by Leroy Van Dyke. All the other acts would rehearse their parts before going on, but Mr. Bare would arrive as late as possible from fishing. smile Nice guy. One of my favorite Bobby Bare/Shel Silverstein songs is "Marie Laveaux," a song I sing almost every week at our dance gig. http://youtu.be/8U-WVyXWozA

Shel Silverstein gave me the best advice about the music business I've ever gotten. It was at the Old Town School of Folk Music. I had been doing some picking and hanging out with Bob Gibson, another compadre of Silverstein's. Shel came in to visit with Bob as I walked in. He asked me if I was wannabe musician and I said, "Yes." He said to just hang in and keep at it, that the more you do and the longer you do it, the more it all builds up. He was right. By the time I'm 100 I should be a star! smile

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash

It's only music.

I know Bobby Bare from the Old Dogs CD - which I love smile - In fact he sings my favorite from that album She'd Rather be Homeless smile

It will be interesting to see if he gets selected - Does he know what he is letting himself in for? grin

Mike,

You may not be rich and may not be a star, but your quality and breadth of experiences in life sure surpasses most rich people I've ever met and you've got more true friends than most of the famous people I've met as well. So all in all, not a bad deal. And as he suggested, you're still doing what you love. I'd say that's a true and legit music industry success story!

I noticed that there is a Bobby Bare Jr who is the son of the original. He is also a singer.

Ben:

Funny you should mention Tom T. Hall. Years ago, I would sometimes drive the "back way" from Brentwood to Franklin where I would pick up my daughter after school. I'd pass Tom T's impressive place and wish I could enjoy such a spread. Prolific just barely describes this man. Thanks for reminding me.

Brian:

You described ol' Dunbar's musical life quite well... and deservedly so. Can't wait 'til he becomes rich and famous so we can "hit him up" for a loan... or even "gherm" him. (LOL!)

Bobby Bare did some great stuff in the mid-60s.
