Hello Dzoc808 and welcome to the JPF. I think you are going to have trouble attracting too much attention if you use "midi-sounding" demos as your calling card. I know it doesn't have anything to do with "songwriting", but the presentation of the demo is really, really important.

Kevin, I can second that. This offer would be of interest to me, but hearing the demo does put me off, even though I know pop is often not that sophisticated. If the demo was more inspiring, maybe I, and others perhaps, would find it more attractive.

Anyway, I will watch with interest.

DZ, (Dizzy?),,Cool name!

Anyway, welcome! I think you would do better to seek a music and singer collaborator first. Maybe some will do everything, including lyrics. Ask for that here as well in another post. Also, get to know the Folks's talents and personalities, then ask any of them that you feel is a good match. Plenty of people here that can start from scratch and do what is needed to end up with a quality song and production.

laugh Go spend some time in any one of the three Lyric Feedback Forums. JPF is overflowing with talented lyricists who express themselves regularly in unique and sophisticated ways. The challenge is narrowing it down to the right collaborator for you and your song.

Good luck.

INSPIRATION IS EVERYTHING IN MUSIC--

CO-WRITERS HAVE TO MESH LIKE TO PRECISION GEARS AND BOTH HAVE THAT UNIQUE STREAK IN THEM--IT TAKES A LOT OF THOUGHT AND PRACTICE WORKING WITH A CO-WRITER, TO PRODUCE A HIT--PLUS YOU HAVE TO BE WITH THE "IN CROWD"--GOOD LUCK!

WELCOME TO JPF--

Co-writing is a hard thing. Everybody writes and everybody sees it differently. Lyrics are seen as not unique enough or too unique.

Hi Dzoc808

This is a nice little tune. Im surprised folk are being so negative; midi is as good as anything to demonstrate a melody. A melody is a melody it doesnt matter whether its played on a Steinway or a Stylophone the words will fit just the same smile

I suggest leaving it here, I think a few lyricists would like to have a go at writing for this. Writing to an existing tune is a skill in itself and a good thing to practice.

Cheers

Hey Dzoc808,

I like it! Midi is fine, actually midi is preferable as it makes changing the sound so much easier to do with VSTi's. I suggest putting it up in the mp3 feedback forum; you'll get more views.

Best of luck!

I was very surprised at the negativity also! It's one thing to be a lyricist and have someone write the music to your work. To reverse the process and write to existing music is a challenge that more people should take the opportunity to participate in; if only for the exercise....

P.S. I did...

Hello and welcome to JPF, Dzoc808:

Don't be "put off" by any negativity you may have sensed here. We have gotten to be rather "picky" in this modern age where any living room can now become a recording studio... LOL!

I agree with Donna. It is a pretty and "today" sounding tune. I'm surprised you haven't received a ton of PM's from our members, many of whom are pretty darn good lyricists. Naturally, it won't hurt if you "snazz-up" the demo but for pete's sake, don't spend a ton of hard earned money... after all, none of us are big-time artists or producers yet! Please be encouraged and stick around. You're gonna love it here.

All my best,

Dave

I am no stranger to midi. It is a great way to compose and to produce and edit demos so I cannot knock midi demos...... but with today's easy to use software it is essential to get far more realistic and "sophisticated" sounds and performances than the very dated, amateur, unsophisticated sounds you offer. With millions competing for attention your stuff has to be so much better than other folks.... sadly it is miles behind in every way. I am not trying to put you off just suggesting that in order to attract sophisticated lyricists you need sophisticated songs and demos with a contemporay feel.

Midi is a great tool and can have soul if the programmer puts soul into it. Having no soul can be said of just about any song or piece of music of any style, genre or generation....it very much depends on the skills and soul of the writer and performer.
We criticise many modern gizmos and tools as having no soul......but the soul comes from the way instruments or tools are used. I have heard tons of soulless stuff produced in the traditional manner....and a lot of soulful MIDI.

Sometimes midi is all we have, not everyone can afford real instruments or the gear to record them if we do have them. For the first couple of years when I started writing again in 2004, all I had was an untunable electric guitar {a gift - probably homemade} that I had to press up against the wooden arm of a chair just so the sound would be amplified enough to hear the chords. Some of us are poor and although I now have a GNX3 for amplification {another gift} I still only have that untunable electric guitar to use.

Ahhh, I think back on when midi and any sort of electric guitar was a luxury.
Keep going.

Midi rocks. Any tool is only as good as the person using it in terms of results. Practice is required with all of them, even a rake and shovel. And anything that helps people make more music is a good one!

A lot of music exists only using midi and is great.

Here are a couple songs, examples of my writing to a pop tune.

It's really hard for me to write to music, I spend half a day just playing it over and over to try'n get a feel for what words I think should go with the certain melody, and many times nothing strikes me.

http://fawm.org/songs/30042/

http://fawm.org/songs/30051/

If my style clicks with you at all, you can pm me and I might have a go at one of your songs down the road, I can write a quick lyric, but not to a melody, takes me some time depending on the song.

I've had the same ( midi sucks ) issue with lyricists, so, we always solve it by me singing nonsense lyrics, or "la la la", etc.

But, that's assuming the composer can carry a tune well enough so it's at least better than the midi sound.

I think it's bad style not to give those who tried any feedback. This anonymous 'genius' has got a choice of quite different lyrics already - and kindly chose to ignore us mediocrities completely. See:

http://www.songwriter101.com/forums/viewthread/87521/

(his tune is quite nice, actually)

Not really, I pretty much recycle the same ideas and stories. The music is the same a lot, too.

Yeah, I was thinking the subject line beckoned for some sarcasm, and you took the words right out of my mouth, thanks for the chuckle.

Yes, most definitely! That is probably my problem. With titles like "Creep Repellent," "Alien Concubine," "Dino Dance," "My Girlfriend Is A Zombie," "Rain Barrel Boogie," etc., my stuff is probably a bit too quirky for most people, who typically want emotional love songs. My stuff is often compared to They Might Be Giants, Devo, or The B52's.

I do write and record serious stuff, but it is the quirky stuff that people remember.

Okay, so here are the lyrics to one of my more-recent songs

Sheila of the Worms

She had both feet underground
But she couldnt stick around
Because sticking around
Just meant sticking out
So she felt around for space
But she felt so out-of-place
Like a feeling that
Nobody felt at all

So she dove around, head underground
To find her self some friends
She made wrong turns
And found some worms
But thats not where our story ends

Although they couldnt speak
Sheila made a squeak
And the worms all turned her way
And that made her smile
As they dug through many miles
And she thought that
Maybe she would stay

So she stuck around, head underground
The worms all helped her out
But those that she held dear, were filled with fear
And they began to shout

BRING SHEILA BACK, BRING SHEILA BACK
The people started saying
They said
BRING SHEILA BACK, BRING SHEILA BACK
Weve got to bring her back to earth

BRING SHEILA BACK, BRING SHEILA BACK
The people started screaming
They yelled
BRING SHEILA BACK, BRING SHEILA BACK
Weve got to bring her back to earth

(solo)

And when she came up for air
She found others standing there
And strange power she never felt before
So with a smile she dug back down
To the ones that she had found
The only ones that loved her from the start

Teeth full of mud, she smiled through blood
And felt the power surge
Those left up above, had known no love
But now they had known fear

And coming from below the turf she had heard:
BRING SHEILA BACK, BRING SHEILA BACK
The worms had all been crying
They cried
BRING SHEILA BACK, BRING SHEILA BACK
Weve got to bring her back to earth

Bye-bye Sheila.
