I am looking for some music to write lyrics to, i normally write my lyrics without any kind of melody in mind, i think i may find it easier to write lyrics to music, if you are interested in collaborating this way please email me.

Mr. E.,

This is a pretty common request due to the very large lyricist community and much smaller number of composer only types. I suggest spending some time posting lyrics and getting to know folks who in turn may be more interested in working with you based on your talent and body of lyric work posted they can check out. Folks like to know you write in a style of their liking and talent level before offering to co-write because there are so many established and well known lyricists here already to choose from who are battle tested and who have demonstrated their skills in working with their peers here in a variety of ways.

Or you can try and catch one of the composers your way, but don't get discouraged if it proves more difficult that way. ]

Happy hunting,

Brian

Actually, it's a pretty rare request in my experience--the usual request is "please apply music to this lyric". But I agree with Brian's advice. Lots of collabs happen here--good luck! smile

I second that. Its easier to co-write with someone if I have an idea of their style, skill level and interests. The best way to find a co-writer (here, at least) is to comment on what other people are doing. People will see that you are willing to help others and also get a feel for how easy or difficult you might be to work with. This may eventually lead to them taking interest in your music and wondering what you can create together.

Well Brian see the problem i have is copyright, i wouldn`t want anyone taking my lyrics and earning money from them, the ones i have posted are copyrighted but i dont have many that i did copyright. I was a member of the songwriter and composer guild who offer the service for free, only cost`s are joining as a member for six months, my six are up now and it could be a while before i can renew my membership so anything i write now i dont feel comfortable posting. I dont really know how else to get copyrights.

Thanks Mark.

And to Aaron, i dont really consider myself experienced or qualified enough to comment on other peoples work, i`m new to all this and initially wanted to find out if what my friends and family think about my lyrics is shared with people who know about these thing`s, i`d be glad to help anyone i can but i`m a bit of a novice.

Obviously, I can't make any guarantees about people here not stealing for your music, but I feel confident that most of us are looking to make it on own efforts and just want the same for everyone else. Post what you feel comfortable with, of course, but don't shortchange yourself by missing out on the opportunities that exist here.

As for not being qualified to comment on other's work--horse feathers! The name of the forum is Just Plain Folks. We're regular people sharing a common interest, therefore you qualify.

As soon as you put your work in writing or on a recording, you have copyrighted it legally. You can register your work with your government copyright office too, but that simply formalizes it.

The truth is, nobody wants lyrics. There are 105,769 lyrics written for every one that makes any significant money, and the ones that do are written by pros or the artist that records them. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Hey Colin, I agree with the philosophy but where did you get that number of lyrics?

Shayne,

That number was from a quote by Winston Churchill on Facebook (not really - I made it up - it's probably actually far worse).

Hello Mr. E.,

on a 'competing' web site called Songwriter101* there is a collab-forum that you might give a try. I'm posting three links here, that may be worth your attention:

http://www.songwriter101.com/forums/viewthread/88304/
Wallace was not interested in my stuff, he's interested in Christian topics

http://www.songwriter101.com/forums/viewthread/88369/
I've already co-written two songs with Adrian that wait to be produced but there's more to come

http://www.songwriter101.com/forums/viewthread/88456/
(this is in the 'songwriter's lounge' forum, actually) Donny wants to write a 50ies style Rock'n Roll song. Gary and I already made suggestions. No harm in a little competition, is there?

As for Copyright issues. GB is in the EU (more or less), so there is no need to worry. Although the copyright registration crap actually has its origin in the UK their legislation slowly is approaching modern standards, If you publish lyrics make sure they've got your name on them. "Mr. E." can only be of use if it's your registered pseudonym.

Check out my site to see how I deal with things:
http://bernd-harmsen.de
(about 150 of my lyrics either have been written to match someone else's lyrics or have been set to music over the years - this often goes hand in hand)

Have fun,
Bernd

* there are more sites, yet I only use these two American sites at the moment.

That's BMI's site. They've been JPF sponsors and supporters for many years.

Lyricist only folks outnumber composer only folks at least 10 to 1 so just be sure your writing is top notch or you may spin your wheels a bit finding quality talent to work with.

Unless there is a collaboration agreement between the contributors stating otherwise.

Any "copyright" is modified by "intent", but there must be evidence ( such as an agreement, emails, etc ). I'm not a lawyer, so do double check on this. I am just regurgitating what I think I remember reading somewhere.
