Big Boulder
© words and music by C. Stewart/Joice Marie ( March 15, 2007 )

I've found a perfect way
To spend a sunny day
It's, a different kind of high

Harness on, moving slow
Grab a rope, off I go
One foot, closer to the sky

CHORUS..
And I got, just enough soul
And a California roll
I'm never gonna stop
Untill I reach the top
Of Big Boulder, Big Boulder

Got anchors, bolts and hooks
I've even read some books
And I'm aware of jagged edges

As I approach the sun
I feel like number one
Climbin' the ancient ledges

CHORUS..
I got just enough soul
And a California roll
I'm never gonna stop
Untill I reach the top
Of Big Boulder, Big Boulder

Bridge..
With a Joe Brown Super
And a spring loaded cam
You'll never see me bail

Instrumental break........

I'm never gonna stop, untill I reach the top
I'm never gonna stop
I'm never gonna stop, untill I reach the top
Of Big Boulder, Big Boulder
Hey Calvin/Joice Marie!

Awesome song! I really like the lyrics - especially as someone that used to be a rock climber!

Charlann
Hey You Two Rockers,

Couldn't help but think how the last two lines of each chorus have that real "western" song sound, kinda neat to hear that ole western sound in the year 2007. I think you need to speed up the verses. Sometimes the music seems slower than the words. Has a little bit of a rocky road ahead but w/alittle smoothing over perhaps someone will be looking for something of a unique subject matter and need a song like this.

Best,
Lynn
Perhaps the Rock trilogy should be called the rock pillartry.
Howdy you two...I am sure it wasn't intentional but the music in this sure made me think of one of those old western tv series...maybe it was Rawhide..LOL It's probably just an age thing that folks younger than I am wouldn't fixate on. JM you have a great voice! What range!! Wasn't convinced with the drum in this, however. Seemed overpowering and more of a dirge-like sound. I was expecting something more upbeat for this since it's a climbing song.

Just my 2 pennies...and you know they are worth less (worthless) every day!! LOL

Hugs,
Bobbie
Hi Charlann,

Thanks for taking a look at this one.
Your time & comments are very much appreciated.
Wow, a rock climber.....I'd like to try that some day.
I think I could go that.

Yeah, Bobbie was right on, an old western sound. And I do
remember Rawhide, Bobbie!!!

Joyce, great voice!!

Diane

Hey Mr Rock, and Ms Roll, nice going!!!

yeah rawhide came to mind...diff of opinions, I'd like more boom boom drums, kinda move the climb along....
calvin... i honestly wasn't sure what you meant by the lyrics until i heard the song, now i get it!! one foot closer to the sky is an awesome line!! i'm afraid of heighths though so i can't join you on the boulder!! LOL good song dude!! smile scotty

Hi Bobbie,

Thanks for the listen, glad you liked it ok.
I like what Joice does with a song.
She just keeps singing better & better each time.
She did a couple of versions, I suggested she throw a drum in there.
Have a good day.

Hi Charlann!

So glad that this is 'rock climber' approved! Thanks so much smile jm
Hi Lynn

So nice of you to take the time to listen and comment...I haven't had a chance to listen again with a metronome to this, but I will. I don't think there is a tempo change between verses and chorus. It might be the upbeats emphasised that are making it sound different to you. Anyway, glad that you feel a western thing going on. That's good, I think! smile jm
HIDee Neighbor (& Mz Gem!)

Can't Yet listen to da Music, but Words seem to be workin' Well, Yess'ms! "KUDOS" for Takin' Us All "There!" so well.

Sole Ignorant Floridian Question...
"What's a 'California Roll'?"

I assume it's WAY tastier than a Danish?

Thankee & Good Luck, My Friends!

Hi Ritt,

Thanks for listening.
As you know, with Joice singing it would sound good with or without drums.
Have a good one.

Hey Calvin and Joice:

Nice one - enjoyed it!

I do some climbing and it reads authentic. Enough that I would have assumed the writer did too....

Only line that didn't ring quite true for me was California roll...

I would have been tempted to go with something like,

I've got just enough soul
And I'm just enough a fool

grin

Cool - nice job on the melody, Joice. Western feel is a good match to the lyric, imo.

Scott
Hey Ya'll,
Good lyrics, Cal. Have a John Denver air to them, but the music wouldn't be in that genre. I know little about music so I'll say little. smile With proper instrumentation this might be way better, but it seems to drag too much for me. I suppose you're going for a deliberate, one hand...one foot at a time approach to fall in with the climber's resoluteness, JM, but it seems too plodding to me. Something a little breezier, lighter, nimbler.. then maybe holding a few notes longer.
Okay, I've shown my ignorance long enuff! blush
Overall, nice job.
Ben
Hi Stan,

Thanks a bunch for tuning in to this one, Joice made it fun.
I like what she does with a tune.
A California Roll is.....

Something that rolls up similar to a sleeping bag (but smaller) that you carry rock climbing supplys and tools in.
Like a small back pack that unrolls for easy access to the items you may need.

I've never climbed but, I've read thats what it is.
Hope that helps.
And as long as your asking....

A Joe Brown Super is.....

A Hard hat.

Have a cool day.

Hi Bobbie!

Thanks so much for you kind words. You flatter me...I understand why you thought of Rawhide it's a classic. I think it's is exactly the strong up and down rhythm that is what is in common. The drum adds to that feel... I personally like Calvin's melody and lyric a lot and it gives me the climbing bug. I'm sure that I will experiment some other percussion too. So it's good to hear others' ideas. I appreciate you stopping in. smile jm
Hi Diane

Nice picture! Thanks so much for your time. smile jm
Hi rittman

Glad you had a listen!... yeah it makes me wonder now what a bass drum added will sound like. Maybe I'll play some more and experiment. This is just my interpretation of what Calvin sent me. There's always lots of options that I never even try. But we both like it, so that's a plus to me. smile jm
Hi Richard

Thanks for stopping in! smile jm
